True Colors - Racial Discrimination in Everyday Life 1/2

Documentary on the "nature of today's prejudices." Follows two men (equal in all measurable aspects, except skin color) as they particpate in a variety of "everyday" life interactions and situations to test levels of prejudice based on skin colors. Shows how two young men in St. Louis, one white, one black, but otherwise similar in background, appearance, etc., are treated differently in various situations as they go about shopping, applying for work, and looking for rental housing. In the 1960s, black Americans were promised that this country would not judge people by the color of the their skin. Three decades later, this video investigates situations in which blacks and whites continue to be treated differently. Video raises the question of the relation between discrimination in everyday social exchanges and what sociology calls "structural racism," the systematic exclusion of people of color from full access to social resources. Where does this program root the problem? In the individual bias of a few people? Or are individuals expressions of a society based on white privilege? Does everyone who identifies as white have a stake in upholding the racial hierarchy with its tendency for white preferential treatment? On the other hand, what responsibility do European Americans have for eliminating or helping to eliminate racial preference? How would some of the problems indicated in the film be addressed or remedied? Descript'n 1 videocassette (19 min.) : sd., col. ; 1/2 in ...

Fighting Youth Discrimination: Q&A with NYRA President Jeffrey Nadel

Are young people being discriminated against? Founded in 1968, the National Youth Rights Association (NYRA, youthrights.org) says yes and works to educate the public on how laws intended to protect young people instead treat them as second-class citizens. Reason.tv sat down with NYRA's president Jeffrey Nadel to discuss how drinking, curfew, and other laws punish young adults. Nadel points to New Jersey's Kyliegh's law as an example of how the unintended consequences of many laws aimed at protecting youth actually endanger them. The law requires drivers under the age of 21 to have a red decal on the license plates of the vehicles they drive, ostensibly to allow law enforcement to be more protective of them. But the decals have instead lead violent drivers to target those cars; infractions by younger drivers also come with harsher penalties for typical traffic violations. Instead of one-size-fits-all policies that punish responsible youth, Nadel says that decisions about alcohol consumption, work hours, and even voting should be more tailored to individuals, regardless of age. For more on Kyleigh's Law, read Reason magazine's June 2011 story "Dead Kids Make Bad Laws." (reason.com And on lowering the drinking age, check out Reason.tv's "21: Is It Time to Lower the Drinking Age" (www.youtube.com and Reason magazine's "Back to 18" (reason.com Interview by Michelle Fields. Housing Discrimination in 1950s America: All the Way Home (1957)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Housing discrimination is when an individual or family is treated unequally when trying to buy, rent, lease, or sell a home based on certain characteristics, such as race, class, sexuality, or religion. This type of discrimination has been thought of to lead to housing and spatial inequality and racial segregation which, in turn, can exacerbate wealth disparities between certain groups. In the United States, housing discrimination began after the abolition of slavery as part of a federally sponsored law, but has since been made illegal; studies however show that it still exists if in more subtle forms. Following the abolishment of slavery, fifteen state courts obeyed ordinances that enforced the denial of housing to African American and other minority groups in white-zoned areas. These ordinances were then made illegal in the 1917 Supreme Court case, Buchanan vs. Warley. Following this decision, however, nineteen states legally supported "covenants", or agreements, between property owners to not rent or sell any homes to minorities. Although the covenants, too, were made illegal in 1948, they were still allowed to be present in private deeds. It was not until the Fair Housing Act of 1968 that the Federal Government made its first concrete steps to deem all types of housing discrimination unconstitutional. The Act explicitly prohibits housing discrimination practices common at the time, including filtering information about a home's ...

Religion-Based Discrimination

Rev. Reggie Longcrier, pastor of Exodus Missionary Outreach Church in Hickory, NC: Sen. Edwards has said his opposition to gay marriage has been influenced by his Southern Baptist background. We know religion was once used to justify slavery, segregation and women not being allowed to vote, all of which today are recognized as unconstitutional and socially and morally wrong. So why is it still acceptable to use religion to justify denying gay and lesbian American their full and equal rights.

Gay Discrimination (Presentation video)

This is the 2nd video I edited for my group's Socialization as a Process presentation. Our topic was on 'Homosexuals, and the discrimination against them'. So I got this idea of making a kind of a music video to show a story of a girl being discriminated for being gay. Thanks to Jojo and Amelia, and a whole lot of people that I credit at the end of the video, it was a success :D Jojo, thanks for sacrificing so much for our video here! Being pushed onto the floor, roll in the grass, lie on the floor, take scenes again and again, nearly get knocked by your car again and again, acting out emo scenes, act as a homosexual, without even complaining once. And this isn't even your group, nor your class, nor your subject, nor your stream... Thank you very much! :D I still owe you a meal. :p Oh and I do not own any songs in this video. The songs are: 'You and I' by Park Bom 'It Can't be Real' by Lim Jeong Hee 'I'm Busy' instrumental by 2NE1 We used these songs for scoring good marks in our assignment purpose (and we got full marks hehehhee..)
