Terry Pratchett Interview: 25 Years of Discworld

Terry Pratchett talks about his Discworld series, one of the longest-running fantasy book series written by one author, and celebrates its 25 years of publication. He talks about how he started writing it and how it evolved into what it is today, for him and its fans.

Discworld Noir - Act 1.01

So here's something I've been meaning to do for ages, and it'll be interesting to see how far I get before this becomes cumbersome and boring, but hopefully that shouldn't happen. Discworld Noir is my all-time favourite video game, hands-down. It's a brilliant story that simultaneously created my love for both Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of books, as well as the Noir detective genre. It's quite an obscure game though, and I believe it's not widely available outside of Europe. Combined with the fact that not many PCs will run it properly these days, I thought I'd finally give in and upload a playthrough. I could probably play this thing with my eyes closed, since I've played it so much. I'm running this game on Windows XP, using compatability mode: Windows NT 4.0 (service pack 5), in 256 colours and in 640x480 screen resolution, because the game usually complains if I use any other settings. There are minor glitches, but since there was never a patch these will sadly never be fixed. Anyway, here's the introduction to the game. Hope you enjoy my playthrough - I try to get as many interactions on film as possible. By the way, it's impossible to game over in this, so you could argue that there's no actual "game" element, other than trying to complete it. I still love it though, whenever I sit down to play it I feel like I am watching one of my favourite films again. Oh, and there will be annotations. You may want to turn those off if they annoy you ...

Discworld - Guards! Guards! Trailer (Better Sound)

This one has quieter music because that seemed to be all people could say about this. :P Sound editing is not my thing, obviously. X) I hope this one won't hurt your ears. And another note: I cast the voices over the internet, so please excuse any problems you may think there is with the voice acting. I personally think the voice actors did a great job without any in-person directing and I did my best trying to get the sound to be as ungrainy and clear as possible. C: I made this as a little summer project to keep me busy and to try out a few things I learned in my first year of animation. A (fake) trailer for the (non-existent) "Guards! Guards!" movie! Discworld (Psygnosis Limited) (1995) - Intro

Basics In 1995, Terry Pratchett made a very wonderful move in his career. He took his renowned Discworld series to the screen-that is, the computer screen. Partnered with Psygnosis Ltd., Pratchett crated a fantastic world of comedy and mischief viewed through the clever gameplay of a point-and-click adventure game. Pratchett's stories were a hit back during the time of the adventure games glory, so you can imagine how incredibly popular the games of the same characters and name were Europe and America. Story Atop the flying disk planet known as Discworld, flying along in infinite space, foul things are transpiring in the famous city of Ahnk-Morpork. A dark guild have brought back a great beast, one that no one really believes in. But they will before long. Not standing still, the wizards of Unseen University send their most expendable wizard to destroy the threat. Rincewind, the wizzard, er, I mean wizard, is the worlds most inept wizard. He'd much rather run away from the dragon than confront and destroy it, and it doesn't make things any better that the evil bad guys and even Death him-self are all right on his tail. Can Rincewind keep all of Ahnk-Morpork from becoming nice little fried Morporkians? Play this delightful little adventure and find out for yourself.

Discworld 1 (1995)

Discworld (aka Discworld: The Trouble With Dragons) is a graphic adventure game developed by Teeny Weeny Games and Perfect 10 Productions in mid-1995. It stars Rincewind the Wizard (voiced by Eric Idle) and is set on Terry Pratchett's Discworld. It was released on both floppy disk and CD-ROM, with the CD-ROM version featuring full voice acting for all characters. The game's plot is based roughly on the events in the book Guards! Guards!, but with Rincewind substituted for Samuel Vimes. The game also serves as a prologue to Moving Pictures. There are four other Discworld games: a direct sequel to Discworld, titled Discworld II: Missing Presumed...!? (Discworld II: Mortality Bytes! in North America), Discworld Noir (a stand alone story starring an original character), a text adventure called The Colour of Magic which strictly adheres to the events of the first Discworld novel and another game based on The Colour of Magic released on mobile phones titled Discworld: The Colour of Magic.

Lewton heads to the Café Ankh to find Captain Jenkins to ask if he can take a look around the Milka, but instead he ends up having a chat with his old mate Corporal Nobby Nobbs instead. When You Met Her Lyrics: You can't recall; If the whiskey knocked you flat; Or if everything was a blur; When you met her; All that you remember; Are the tunes of a vam-pire; A melancholic tuuuuuune; About impending doom; I'll fetch your tankard; Fill it to the brim; A cask of stale; Broken Drum ale; Wondering how long till you meet it again on the bank of the Ankh; Too much to drink; You could barely even think; Too much Bearhugger; When you meeeeeeet heeeeeeeeer. Let's Play Discworld Noir - Part/Ep 1 (Intro)

Disworld Noir! Yay! This is an awesome game, and it might seem kind of dull/samey samey at first if you don't like the noir genre, but in the second half of the game it picks up. The humour, style, voice acting, atmosphere, everything about this game is great. I wouldn't call it my favourite adventure game though, but that's purely because I like bright, colourful games more, like Monkey Island. This game is intelligent, and it has just the kind of humour I like. As such, I don't like to talk over it, so this playthrough doesn't have too much input from me. Just saying. I figured I'd just upload the intro to begin with since it's pretty long on its own, so here it is! And yes, I can't read fast without missing out half of the text/replacing it with gibberish. It's hard, okay? :( Try it yourself, it's ridiculously hard to keep up with the scrolling text. Finally, if you own the game yourself and want to know how I got it working, check out this very helpful thread: www.adventuregamers.com The solutions seem to work for Windows 7 as well as Vista. You basically need the no cd patch.

Discworld 2 - That's Death [Outro] PC [HD] [HQ]

Hello there! ....'That's Death'.....Much fun! :-) Discworld II: Missing Presumed...!? (Discworld II: Mortality Bytes! in North America) (in german: Discworld II - Vermutlich vermisst...!?! ), is the second graphic adventure game based on Terry Pratchett's series of fantasy novels set on the mythical Discworld. The game was developed and produced in 1996 by Perfect Entertainment for the PC, and ported in 1997 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It was published by Psygnosis for the PC and PlayStation, and by Sega for the Saturn (only in Europe). The game, on two CD-ROMs (one for the console versions), features hand-drawn environments and animations, full voice acting and a simple interface. In Discworld II the player controls Rincewind the "wizzard" (voiced by Eric Idle, as in the previous game) who has been burdened with the task of coercing Death out of his impromptu retirement and back into his regular duties. The plot borrows from a number of Discworld books, most notably Reaper Man, Moving Pictures and Lords and Ladies.

Discworld Noir - Act 2.01

I'll take the opportunity to use the description for this new act as a sort of commentary for what's coming up. Act 1 was completed a lot quicker than I thought it would be, but then it is quite a short act anyway for someone who knows what they're doing. Act 2, in contrast, I believe to be the longest act of the game, and the most complicated to film due to the sudden influx of characters and clues that Lewton receives. Never fear though, this has not put me off at all, and due to the positive feedback I've received thus far (and also due to how none of the videos have apparently been taken down by YouTube for whatever reasons they usually give for deleting them), I'm more than happy to continue. However, the bitter-sweet pill to this playthrough is something the game designers themselves would probably have me shot for: you're only seeing one path through the game, as there's actually often quite a few ways to receive various clues or to progress further. Where I know of alternative paths I'll annotate what they are and what they consist of just for viewer benefit, but I probably won't ever record these alternative paths. I'll generally pick a dialogue tree or path that's either funnier, more dramatic, for convenience of making the most of ten minutes per video, or just to make Lewton look like a bloody good detective. The same applies to most of the character interactions I show, too. I know most (I think) of the clue/item/character combinations that result in funny ...

Discworld Noir - Act 3.01

Once again I'll take the opportunity to use this fresh act to monologue some details of "behind the scenes", if you will. Act 2 really didn't take as long as I thought it would, but that's not a bad thing. I know I said that Act 2 was complicated in how I show what line of inquiry to follow, and then I realised that Act 2 is nothing compared to Act 3 in complexity! Act 3 really is the meat of the game, and here we'll find a gradual shift in the genre of the plot from a noir detective story to...well, something quite different! I'll also no longer be adding the annotation at the beginning of each video informing the viewer that my incessant rambling and geekyness can be turned off (or at least the annotations can anyway - I myself am beyond hope!). I figure 30+ videos can give people the idea that they can politely decline my insight. I don't think there's much else to say, other than thanks to everyone who watches these, special thanks to those who comment and let me know I'm not wasting my time (although when it comes to DWN, I'm never wasting my time) and I have indeed learned a few things from viewer correspondence; various references that went over my head that I now know about, that sort of thing. So without further description, Act 3! Lewton returns to his grave and unexpectedly meets a new friend... Discworld is a registered trademark of Sir Terry Pratchett & Lyn Pratchett.
