DLR crawler robot meets Justin and Hand-Arm-System

A six legged crawling robot (DLR crawler) is used for developing and testing autonomous, vision based navigation. DLR`s humanoid robot Justin, an experimental system for research on bimanual dexterous manipulation, shows its dynamic sensing and movement capabilities by catching balls tossed in its direction. The Hand-Arm-System is designed to be similar to the human arm in its kinematic and dynamic properties, but also to be robust against unforeseen collisions.

DLR's ROSAT Satellite Reentry - Updated

Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Germany's space agency, now predicts that its ROentgen SATellite (ROSAT) X-Ray observatory will deorbit sometime between Friday, October 21 and Monday, October 24. Much of the X-ray satellite will burn up in the atmosphere, although 30 pieces are expected to survive reentry. The largest single fragment could weigh up to 1.7 tons. Aerospace engineers from Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) used the company's analysis and visualization software to create this video depicting: • ROSAT in its current orbit • The satellite's ground track • Its burn-up in reentry • Statistical debris break-up model • Estimated size of debris region Although it is too early to predict the time and location of the re-entry, DLR says that predictions of the time period will become more refined as the date of reentry draws nearer. As DLR's ROSAT satellite nears reentry, go to DLR's website (www.dlr.de to get the most current updates. Aerospace engineers from Analytical Graphics, Inc. Ricardo De La Riva - Knee Lapel DLR Sweep - BJJ Weekly #073

www.bjjweekly.com Ricardo De La Riva shows us how he sets up a basic DLR sweep from guard. Notice how he moves his hips outside of his opponents leg to make room for him to slide in the DLR hook. If you don't make space by moving your hips you may not be able to get the hook set properly. It's important to get the push timing down so make sure to practice plenty of reps. The DLR guard in general relies on a lot of precise positioning and timing, if you are forcing the sweep something isn't right.

Ricardo De La Riva - DLR Hook Sweep - BJJ Weekly #076

www.bjjweekly.com Ricardo De La Riva shows us a nice reverse hook sweep using the standard DLR as a setup but sweeping with the opposite hook. This set up is a little different because you are using the same side sleeve grips. Your second hook comes in over the top of the arm and then under the hamstring. Off balance your opponent and then make space for the sweep by scooting your hips away. Finish in side control.

www.bjjweekly.com Ricardo De La Riva shares the details on one of his sweeps from the DLR guard. In this sweep make sure when you trap the angle you keep his knee from turning to the outside. If you have trouble clearing the body, use the second variation where you step on your opponents shoulder. Obviously, the sleeve grip is absolutely critical to keep while executing this sweep.

DLR-LONDON

The Docklands Light Railway is an automated light metro or light rail system opened on 31 August 1987 to serve the redeveloped Docklands area of London.[1] It covers several areas of London, reaching north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. The DLR is operated under a concession awarded by Transport for London to Serco Docklands Ltd, a joint organisation of the former DLR management team and Serco Group. The system is owned by DLR Limited, part of the London Rail division of Transport for London (TfL) which also manages London Overground and London Tramlink (but not London Underground, which is a separate division of TfL). In 2006 the DLR carried over 60 million passengers.[2] It has been extended several times, with work and proposals continuously ongoing. Although it has some similarities to other public transport systems in London such as the London Underground, DLR trains are not compatible with the Underground network, Crossrail or the wider railway network in Britain. DLR researchers support the development of the solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse

... and conduct ground vibration tests In 2012, Solar Impulse is to set out on a flight around the globe and will be in the air day and night during that time. Initial test flights of this unique solar-powered aircraft Solar Impulse are in progress in the Payerne region of Switzerland. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is supporting this ambitious project and various DLR Institutes are involved in providing this support. In early 2010, DLR's Institute of Aeroelasticity (Institut für Aeroelastik) ground vibration tests on prototypes in Zurich. This is a task that requires the technology, design and construction of the aircraft to be of the highest standard. The aircraft needs a large wing surface area in order to generate sufficient lift. These wing surfaces also provide space for the solar cells, which power the four electric motors. For Solar Impulse to continue its round-the-world flight after sunset, its batteries need to store sufficient solar power during the day to keep the propulsion units supplied with energy until sunrise. The exceptionally lightweight construction of this aircraft is key to its ability to save energy. Solar Impulse has the wingspan of an Airbus A340, but it is only as heavy as a mid-range passenger car. The lightweight structure of Solar Impulse needs to be robust as well as flexible in order to withstand in-flight loads and to ensure that the aircraft remains manoeuvrable. To a certain extent, these material characteristics can be simulated on ...

Team DLR wins IMAV 2011 Outdoor Competition

The "Team DLR" was a joint effort to participate in an international micro aerial vehicle competition. It comprised DLR researchers of the Institute of Flight Systems, Braunschweig, and the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, Oberpfaffenhofen. The competition took place in t'Harde, Netherlands in September 2011. Unmanned aircraft that showed a high level of autonomy, ie independence from a human pilot, received more points for each successfully attempted mission element than its manually piloted counterpart. The team DLR was one of two contestants that managed and coordinated autonomous flight of up to four unmanned aircraft at the same time within the arena. As a result, Team DLR accomplished various mission elements within a competition time slot of just 30 minutes: Pass a 6m x 6m gate, recognize a sequence of digits, find and identify „drug dealers" that were hiding somewhere out of sight, drop spy microphones within a designated area and recognize what people were talking. As you may recognize from the footage, not all aircraft worked as planned, such that the coordination plan had to be adapted on short notice. Nevertheless, all accomplished mission elements were performed successfully and autonomously, including take off and landing maneuvers.
