Dobie Gray - Drift Away (Original Official Video)

(Read my blog post here: Read my blog post here: bit.ly Dobie Gray's version of "Drift Away" is, justifiably, the most famous and, by far, the most brilliant reading of the Mentor Williams-penned (that would be Paul Williams' brother) 70s staple. Originally released on John Henry Kurtz' 1972 REUNION album, the indelible classic always takes me away...to that far away place I used to reside -- within the deepest caverns of my soul. At times the song makes me weep, as I miss the halcyon days of my youth and the kinder world we thrived in. When any ills of the world would be swept away when reaching for your LP of your favorite music was all that was needed to, well, drift away. The song was covered hundreds of times these past 40 years, most famously and recently in a passionless 2003 recording by Uncle Kracker. Credited as Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray, the track meandered along in karaoke sterility until finally Gray's soul chimed in mid-point and he infused it with a thrilling tremble. When the track reached #9 on Billboard's Top 100, Gray broke the record for the biggest gap between top US top 10 appearances (it had been 30 years between both). The Kracker version had a far more major impact on Billboard's Adult Contemporary charts -- it holds the record as the longest #1 on that chart, having reigned for 28 weeks in 2003-04. No doubt thanks to Gray. There was a story told by Kracker that the song was initially written for Elvis, but Presley turned it down once he ...

Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor

This is probably the single biggest and most acclaimed Northern Soul record of all time, and we filmed this performance for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul" in Nashville, in early 1999. Dobie is otherwise best known for his 1973 smash "Drift Away," Dobie Gray was a versatile vocalist who could handle soul, country, and pop, not to mention musical theater. Gray's origins are somewhat ill-defined; different sources alternately list his birth name as Leonard Victor Ainsworth or Laurence Darrow Brown, and his Texas birthplace as Brookshire or Simonton. His likely birth date is July 26, 1940 (though some sources list 1942 or 1943). Whatever the case, Gray grew up in a family of sharecroppers, and discovered gospel music through his grandfather, a Baptist minister. He also soaked up the R&B and country music of his surroundings, and in the early '60s he moved to Los Angeles to seek his fortune. Before adopting the name Dobie Gray, he recorded several singles under the names Leonard Ainsworth, Larry Curtis, and Larry Dennis. His seventh single, "Look at Me," became his first chart hit in 1963, but his true breakout was a 1965 recording of "The 'In' Crowd," whose Motown-style bounce distinguished it from jazzman Ramsey Lewis' celebrated version. Gray hit the Top 20 with "The 'In' Crowd" and also had some success with the follow-up, "See You at the Go-Go". "Out On The Floor" was not a hit in the US, and it was only years later that it became a cult classic. This period, spent ...

DRIFT AWAY! ::: Dobie Gray :::

{RIP} Dobie! My favorite Dobie quote was: "Live every day to the fullest and stay lifted. Better days are ahead!" "Drift Away" was one of the biggest hits of 1973, sold over one million copies, and remains a staple of radio airplay! His real name was most probably Lawrence Darrow Brown. In 1972, he won a contract with Decca Records, shortly before it became part of MCA, to make an album with producer Mentor Williams, Paul's brother, in Nashville. Among the songs that they recorded at the Quadrafonic Sound Studios, co-owned by session musicians Norbert Putnam and David Briggs, was Mentor Williams' song "Drift Away", featuring a guitar riff by Reggie Young. Released as a single, the song rose to # 5 on the US pop charts, and remains Gray's best known song today. He once said that MCA were unsure of how to market the albums - "They didn't know where to place a black guy in country music. Dobie was also in a west coast production of "Hair". He passed away on december 6, 2011.

Dobie Gray - We Had It All

This is a wonderful track from the "Drift Away" album. It was written by Donnie Fritts and Troy Seals. Elvis Presley loved it and considered recording it but felt that his fans would think he was singing about his ex-wife, Priscilla. So, he decided against recording it. A loss for us.

"DRIFT AWAY " Dobie Gray Acoustic Cover Version by: ARDIE SARAO

"DRIFT AWAY " Dobie Gray Acoustic Cover Version by: ARDIE SARAO This another simple version of one of my all favorite classic song by: DOBIE GRAY "Drift Away" (also known erroneously as "Give Me The Beat, Boys") is a song written by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. However, Dobie Gray's cover is by far the most popular version. It became Gray's biggest hit in 1973, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, though it did not enter the charts in the UK. This song is also a famous "goodbye" or ending song for concerts. Its use is often as filler for a last song, usually in preparation for an encore, since it has a catchy beat and a guitar solo can be easily added to the end of the song in order to spice things up before the encore. As such, many live covers have been performed by a multitude of bands and it has become a hit among soft rock fans. Appropriately, it was the final pop hit for Decca Records in the United States. Gray's version of Drift Away remains a staple on many classic rock stations. Dobie Gray - Blue Ribbons (Great song!)

Mr. "Incrowd" or Mr. "Drift Away" was one of many artists who recorded songs by Jackie. "Blue Ribbons" is one of her most catchy pop songs from the 60's and it should have been a big hit if you ask me. The Paramounts (pre. Procol Harum) and Glen Campbell were other well known artists who recorded "Blue Ribbons".

Drift Away, Acoustic Cover of a Dobie Gray song written by Mentor Williams

We don't really know this song well, we just decided to give it a try at this gig for fun, so it's pretty rough. Though the song was made famous by Dobie Gray, it was written by Mentor Williams (brother of songwriter Paul Williams) in 1973. Donohoe & Grimes... Jeff Donohoe (Bass/Vocals) and Mike Grimes (Guitar/Vocals). We were playing live at The Lazy Lizard Bar and Grill in Cedar Crest New Mexico. There is a lot of crowd noise, but that goes along with the live performance. Our special thanks to the girls playing pool in the background. that really give this song some atmosphere. For those who are not from around here... this little watering hole sits on the east slope of the Sandia mountains.... just up the road from where Old Route 66 (and now I-40) leaves the flats and hills to the east and first enters the mountains of New Mexico. For a lot of Americans alive today, this area was their first view of real mountains as they drove west toward California on that famous old hiway. If you climb up the hill just a bit from here, you can see all the way to west Texas on a clear day, right over the top of Fort Sumner where they buried Billy the Kid... The Pecos river runs across this land on it's way to Texas and Mexico, and the old buffalo wallows can still be seen as low spots to the side of the road... welcome to the Old West!
