Here is another gem from my archives. I can't remember where it came from, and the only note that I kept says that it was recorded in New York in 1946. I have always admired his drumming, particularly on the Bunk Johnson tracks of similar dates. Listening to it now, after much (polluted) water has flowed under the bridge, I am amazed by the ability he had to produce a 'melodic' result. So, compare this with the frantic offerings by some of the 'showmen' like G. Krupa, et. al. -and tell me which guy you would like to have spent the evening listening to!!

One of the giants of 1920s American jazz.Johnny Dodds came from a large family whose parents were deeply religious.Johnny,himself was a pious,serious individual,who was teetotal and dependable.His brother, Baby Dodds, however, was a hard drinking,hard womanising guy,who blew his money and was generally irresponsible.This led to much arguing among the brothers.It seems incredible therefore that they recorded so often together.Baby was called baby,not because he was young looking,but because he shared the same names as his father.So instead of being junior,he was the baby version of his dad.J.Dodds made approx 100 records up to 1930.The depression made work very scarce,even for a prominent musician such as himself.He did not have it as tough as others,as his sensible nature meant he invested in an apartment block in NYC,and also in another brother's taxi business.he even drove one of the cabs.The 1930s saw him struggling with his health.He recorded just once in 1938,before the end came in 1940.Not a master technician, he made up for this with that incredible bluesy soaring tone.He was a heavy influence on a number of white players,particulary Pee Wee Russel and Frank Teschmacher. House Rent Rag - Johnny Dodds and the Dixieland Jug Blowers. 1926 Even though today some 6 tracks of Johnny Dodds and the Jug Blowers are available on CD, this track is probably the most obscure one, but also one of the swingiest. The Dixieland Jug Blowers were a popular American musical group of the 1920s. While being a Jug band, the group is often classified as a Jazz band due to its set up which while including regular Jug band instruments such as Jug, Banjo, Guitar and violin, it also used alto saxophone, trombone, piano and even the famous Johnny Dodds on clarinet. This wide variety of instrumentation caused the Dixieland Jug Blowers to become the most sophisticated of its time and influenced many other Jug bands of the time.

Here's another oddity from my old tapes. Johnny Dodds (who is best known for his playing on the Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings) playing, in 1926, with the Dixieland Jug Blowers. The DJB was a band put together by Earle McDonald (bjo) and Clifford Hayes (fiddle) in the 1920's and includes Harry Clifford on the jugs. The band didn't last long, so I guess that is why I "archived" this strange track! (I like it, though!)

How long has it been since you heard a great dub record? For so long it seemed like dub was dead and gone forever. Yeah, portions of it have been incorprated into modern electronica (specifically: drum'n'bass) but I mean a good, fat bass, layin' on the horns, engulf it all in reverb thick enough they hear it across time kinda dub. Scratch Perry dub, King Tubby dub, even Mad Professor dub. Well, enter this disc, and ka-pow you have your gift from the dub gods of Jah. Bad dub, especially nowadays when the perpetrators are so far removed from the original sound, is easy to do. But this, THIS is great dub, done by professionals who clearly know what makes a great dub record. From head-bobbing to downright head-thrashing, this disc WILL move you, guarandamnteed. I'm listening to it as I type, and the brass sections are just incredible. It's funny how people compared the Gorillaz album to the Clash's ahead-of-its-time melting pot triple-album Sandinista, and now we have dub versions of the Gorillaz tracks, just like there were sides of Sandinista that were nothing but dub versions of the album's own songs. It's great! Honestly, if you have any prediliction towards dub reggae AT ALL, you need to hear this. It's like a time-machine and a future-transducer all in one 12-track package. Makes me happy.
