A dog which was rescued at sea off the coast of Kesennuma, Japan, on Friday after being found drifting on a roof is believed to have survived for three weeks after being washed away by the killer tsunami triggered by the March 11 earthquake. Coast guard members aboard a helicopter involved in the day's search for those still missing after the disaster found the dog on the roof drifting along some 1.8 kilometres off Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture. It took several hours to catch the dog and bring him to the safety of a coastguard vessel. The dog's collar has no clues about the owner such as address and contact numbers. UPDATE: the mystery is solved. However, it's very sad and unfortunate: www.abcactionnews.com The accident scene was about a mile from where I found Barney swimming. Our guess is that he was so freaked out and traumatized that he just wanted to get as far away from there as possible. And when he ran out of land, he took to the water. Another credible hypothesis is that he swam towards the kayak because the Chens are avid kayakers, and actually have two yellow ones. Whatever the case, I feel lucky that I was there fishing, because there was no place for him to go and I don't know if he could have made it much farther. He's banged up, but mostly fine. Our hearts go out to the Chen family, who lost their mother. UPDATE 2: Many people have asked what they can do in light of this terrible tragedy. I have been in touch with the Chen family. They suggested (and I wholeheartedly second) that you make a donation to Mothers Against Drunk Driving in the name of "Donna and Barney Chen" to help prevent this from happening again. Sennen Cove, as distinct from Sennen Churchtown, is found at the end of a spur road which joins the A30 trunk road approximately one mile (1.5 km) from Land's End, the most westerly point of the English mainland. The beach extends further north along the coast towards the peninsula of Cape Cornwall a few miles further to the north. There are a few dozen houses mainly built of granite and some of concrete mainly arranged in terraces, typical of many of the villages in Cornwall. On a walk on a Maine beach, our Aussie dog Rosie, saw a 4 x 8' sheet of 2" foam board floating near the shore and jumped on it. What was she thinking? Her jumping on, pushed the board out from the shore and the wind and tide quickly moved her out to sea! Rosie doesn't like swimming, so repeated calls to her to "come" had no effect. The winter (Dec. 19, 2009) air temperature was 20˚ and the sea water 40˚ so this was a life threatening situation. We called 911 and the Bristol Fire Department rescue squad quickly deployed an inflatable boat and saved our puppy! Thank you Fire Fighters!! Rosie was just fine.

A dog rescued from an icy pond in the US may be put down after it bit a news anchor during a live television interview. Max was on the show after being pulled from a freezing reservoir by a firefighter on Tuesday after it fell through the ice while chasing a coyote. Dyer suffering bite wounds to her face and is in a "fair condition" at Denver Health Medical Centre. "I just adore dogs, but I'm especially happy to meet you after your story yesterday," Dyer said to the mastiff as she patted him during the interview. "You're gorgeous." As the interview ended Dyer leaned in towards Max in a show of affection but the dog bared its teeth and snapped at the news anchor before owner Michael Robinson was able to restrain it. "So you may have seen Kyle get bit by the dog in the 7am hour," co-anchor Gary Shapiro wrote on Facebook. "All we know for sure is that he got her on the lip, and she's being treated for the injury at the hospital." Max's owner will be cited for leash law violations, not having control of the dog and not vaccinating it for rabies. The animal is not showing signs of rabies but may be put down anyway. Whilst on training exercise we were contacted by Solent CG on VHF radio to request that we assist in the recovery of a dog that had gone over the cliff at Brass Point, Seven Sisters and had been confirmed alive having fallen into the sea. The lifeboat arrived at 13:00 and the Y boat was launched with 2 PoB. A Springer Spaniel was found under the cliff on a small area of beach. She was cold and shaken but showed no obvious injuries so she was wrapped in a blanket and recovered into the Y boat at 13:15. The Spaniel was taken onto the ALB where she was comforted and kept warm before returning to the boathouse.
