This is a pretty special review for a couple reasons: 1) this is a collaboration between two titans of the craft beer world - Jim Koch of Samuel Adams and Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head. This beer is just ok and may be lacking two qualities like finish, body and/or nose 70-79 pts- not recommended, has no like-able qualities under 69 pts- just a mistake or maybe stored wrong. off notes and you will most likely pour it down drain

Beer Review: Dogfish Head Theobroma


I get together with two buddies, Randy and Chris, to taste a couple of unique beers. This is part one of our tasting of two of the Dogfish Head Ancient Ales. We tried Theoboma 1st, which is based on an ancient beverage that was made in the forests of Central America. It is brewed with honey, Aztec cocoa powder and nibs, chilis, and annatto (fragrant tree seeds) that is used today for food coloring/flavoring purposes.

Beer- Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron - Madison Smith


Dogfish Head Palo Santo is an American Brown ale which comes in at a whopping 12 % abv. It is aged in palo santo wood from Paraguay. The beer pours a thick deep dark brown, and is visibly viscous. The aromas are molasses, muddled dark berries, baker's chocolate, bourbon soaked raisins, and a kick of alcohol burn. The boozy dark berries and caramel follow through in the taste, but a nice bit of tang helps to balance the sweetness. This is a sipper...by a fire.. not a drinker at the beach! Beer Advocate gave it a A- , Rate Beer gave it a 99 and I gave it a 4.5 ! LOVE

Beer Review: Dogfish Head Chateau Jiahu


I got together with my buddies Randy and Chris to try some Ancient Ales from Dogfish Head. This is the 2nd beer we tried. This beverage is made from a chemical analysis of 9000 year old pottery jars found in Northern China, and is called Chateau Jiahu. This "malt beverage" is brewed with rice flakes, honey, grapes, malt, Chrysanthemum flowers, and Hawthorn fruit. A Sake yeast is used for fermentation:

Portamarillo : Epic Brewing Co / Dogfish Head


This week we drink a very special collaboration brew between Epic Beer in New Zealand and Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware. Portamarillo is a smokey "imperial sorta-porter" that is made with Tamarillo's, sometimes known as a Tree Tomato, indigenous to New Zealand. The Tamarillos are roasted over Pohutukawa wood, and fermented with Brazilian Rapadura sugar. We enjoy this brew right after watching it being made on the new Discovery Channel show BrewMasters. If you haven't seen it yet, definitely check it out. On Master Pairings with Dr. Bill, Bill has a special guest from the Crude Brew Crew and they enjoy a tasty German Dunkel Doppelbock with boneless Korean short ribs.

Episode 152 - Dogfish Head Burton Baton


Although officially considered an Imperial IPA, a style that owes its existence to the American west coast, the Burton Baton is actually a mix of an Imperial IPA and an English Old Ale. Called "threads," the two beers are then "threaded" together in to a 10000 gallon oak tank where it ages. Around one pound of hops PER BARREL are added to this brew to make it nice and hoppy hoppy. It turns out that this beer is bold, flavorful, and really tells a story as you drink it, as there are separate flavor profiles during different stages of the drinking process! At 10% ABV, this is a big, yummy beer, and another win from Dogfish Head - but really, who's surprised?

For this ambitious liquid time capsule, we used ingredients and traditions plucked from Egyptian hieroglyphics. Ta Henket is brewed with an ancient form of wheat and loaves of hearth-baked bread, and it's flavored with chamomile, dom-palm fruit and Middle Eastern herbs. To ferment this earthy ancient ale, Sam and friends traveled to Cairo, set out baited petri dishes and captured a native Egyptian yeast strain.

Sadly, there are only a few breweries left in Berlin still brewing the BerlinerWeissestyle which is characterized by its intense tartness (some say sour). There were once over 70 breweries in Berlin alone making this beer! In addition to fermentation with an ale yeast, Berliner Weisse is traditionally fermented with lactic cultures to produce its acidic or green apple-like character. It is delicately hopped with a pale straw color and served as an aperitif or summertime quencher. To soften the intense sourness, Berliner Weisse is traditionally served with a dash of essence of woodruff or raspberry syrup. In our Festina Peche since the natural peach sugars are eaten by the yeast, the fruit complexity is woven into both the aroma and the taste of the beer so there is no need to doctor it with woodruff or raspberry syrup - open and enjoy!
