Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine
In January 1967, prior to recording The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the band had produced at Sound Techniques Studio in London a single entitled Arnold Layne. The single was later released in March of that year and reached #20 in the British charts. Also in January the band had recorded a 16-minute version of Interstellar Overdrive and an improvised jam called Nick's Boogie, for Peter Whitehead's documentary film Tonite Let's All Make Love in London. (The latter track wasn't released until 1991 on the CD reissue of the film's soundtrack). The band's live show consisted mainly of instrumental numbers and blues covers, however they had started to introduce songs which were written primarily by lead guitarist and lead vocalist Syd Barrett. Many of these songs written by Barrett appeared at the Games For May concert several months before the release of the album. Recording of the album began on the 21 February 1967 in studio three of Abbey Road Studios at the same time The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Pretty Things were recording SF Sorrow. The album was produced by Norman Smith, an EMI staff member who had previously engineered all of The Beatles recordings up to 1965's Rubber Soul. Smith would go on to produce Pink Floyd's follow up album, A Saucerful of Secrets. Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor VII - Domine, Jesu Christe
John Eliot Gardiner conducts the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. This performance was filmed at the Palau de la Musica Catalana, Barcelona in Dec. 1991. A Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic tradition is a service designed to pray for the souls of the departed. The parts of the liturgy that are meant to be sung are what constitute all Requiem Mass compositions, including Mozart's. The structure is as follows: 1. Introit 2. Kyrie 3. Sequence: a. Dies irae b. Tuba mirum c. Rex tremendae d. Recordare e. Confutatis f. Lacrimosa 4. Offertory: a. Domine Jesu Christe b. Hostias 5. Sanctus 6. Benedictus 7. Agnus Dei 8. Lux Aeterna Mozart died before finishing the Requiem Mass, and his wife Constanze gave the task of finishing the work to a pupil of Mozart's named Süssmayr. From the Sanctus onward, the Requiem is the creation of Süssmayr, though he did use portions of the Introit and Kyrie for the Lux Aeterna, as requested by Mozart and as per tradition. Despite, or maybe partially because of, the controversy surrounding this Requiem Mass, it is widely regarded as Mozart's greatest masterpiece. Latin Lyrics and English translation follow:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Requiem Mass in D minor KV 626 (completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayer, revised edition by Franz Beyer) Nikolaus Harnoncourt (conductor) Concentus Musicus Wien (orchestra) Arnold Schönberg Chor (choir) Gerald Finley (bass) Kurt Streit (tenor) Bernarda Fink (alto) Christine Schäfer (soprano) I didn't like Harnoncourt's previous Requiems all that much, but this one is amazing: From the lush, full SACD sound of the (perfectly played) live recording to the stunning balance between the harsh, dramatic and the quiet, mourning parts. He's using the newest critical edition of the Süssmayer Requiem completion, which makes for a sleeker, cleaner and at times harsher orchestration, closer to that of the Introitus - but it leaves the Süssmayer parts intact otherwise, there is no Amen fugue after the Lacrimosa. But it's not just the revised score that makes this one stand out, the playing of the Concentus Musicus is precise when it needs to be, soften when the score calls for it - I've never heard trombones this piercing in the Dies Irae before, truly apocalyptic, the strings in the Confutatis and Rex Tremendae are crushing, raw - no trace of the saccharine, overly romanticized Requiems of the past (Karajan is spinning in his grave, goofy tracksuit and all), here all the mourning is laced with sheer terror. The Arnold Schönberg Choir is excellent as usual and the recording captures its color perfectly. As for the soloist, Gerald Finley and Christine Schäfer stand <b>...</b>

Arvo Part - Da Pacem Domine (Lamentate)
Arvo Part is an Estonian composer born in 1935. He's considered a classical post-modern composer, and he explores the minimalism and the hypnotic senses that the voice con make. He's the creator of Tintinnabuli - simple style that was influenced by the composer's mystical experiences with chant music. Musically, Pärt's tintinnabular music is characterized by two types of voices, the first of which (dubbed the "tintinnabular voice") arpeggiates the tonic triad, and the second of which moves diatonically in stepwise motion. The paintings are from the french surrealist painter Yves Tanguy (1900-1955). Yves Tanguy's paintings have a unique, immediately recognizable style of nonrepresentational surrealism. They show vast, abstract landscapes, mostly in a tightly limited palette of colors, only occasionally showing flashes of contrasting color accents. Typically, these alien landscapes are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp as shards of glass, sometimes with an intriguingly organic look to them, like giant amoebae suddenly turned to stone.
