A couple tips and tricks to get the most out of your grain when brewing higher gravity beers with a batch sparge system. FYI - the efficiency for this batch came in at 75%, not bad at all for a high gravity batch sparge mash and boil. www.donosborn.com

Easy All Grain Brewing - Batch Sparge Method

Dorky but functional guide to easy all grain brewing. Extract brewers, you can do it! I follow the Denny Conn method of batch sparging. *** Please Note - you DO return the vorlauf wort back into the mash tun. I did not film this step. **** More details and guides to building some of this equipment: www.donosborn.com

How to wash yeast for homebrew use.

This idea was first presented to me by some steps that Wyeast used to have on their website years ago. Currently, I followed this excellent video: billybrew.com This is the beer for which I am harvesting the yeast/critters in this video. You can see it is somewhat of a special thing (Russian River Sanctification) and I hope to re-use and/or share the bugs with someone else, just like my friend in Denver shared with me in the first place. www.donosborn.com

How to Keg Homebrew

Not the only way to do it, but it's my way of kegging homebrew. I also bottle a few bottles at kegging time. There are other videos and web pages with more details about taking kegs all apart so I didn't include that. More details about my keg setup and beer fridge: www.donosborn.com www.donosborn.com Feel free to post/send any comments. cheers.

No Sparge Brewing.

Homebrew Wednesday. :) Read about this technique in the November 2011 Brew Your Own magazine. It is said to be particularly good for lower gravity beers, and/or ones for which you want to feature the malt character. The malt character is said to somehow be richer or better than when you do a normal sparge beer (either batch or fly). Also, it is said you might save a little bit of time, but I found that with batch sparging, the time savings is probably marginal. With 10 lbs of grain I ended up with 5.1 gallons of 1.048 beer. That is only slightly less than I would expect to get WITH a sparge. Interesting. (I say 1.050 in this vid but forgot that I have to correct for my hydrometer which is 2 pts off). How to build a Kegerator / Beer Fridge

Drilling a hole for CO2 line, and holes for the shanks and faucets. I already had all of this stuff but had to set this fridge up to take them. I have Corny kegs. I made a platform for the inside bottom as well. Hopefully it will give some of you some ideas for making your own. Cheers. Brewing TV - Episode 37: Happiness is a Warm Carboy

[Original postdate: May 20, 2011] In this episode, Chip brews a low-gravity saison. With the help of a rather unique setup, he pushes primary fermentation into the upper ranger of temperature. Guest host Don Osborn helps Chip demonstrate other methods homebrewers can use to raise the temperature during primary fermentation. Then, we join Michael and Jake for a quick tasting notes session on the kellerbier version of the double decoction dunkel brewed back in Episode 34. And how about a Brewing TV Sing-Along!?

Brewing TV - Episode 53: Lager Workarounds

'Tis the season for brewing and fermenting lagers. But what if you don't have the set-up for true lagering process (fermenting fridge, near-freezing basement, etc.)? Brewing TV says "Fake the funk!" In this episode, Dawson and our cohort Don Osborn brew up three beers. They use some yeast strain and temperature workarounds to make them into great non-lagers. [Original postdate: January 13, 2012]

View of (and from) hop trellis hammock, Summer 2011.

I have been growing hops in the backyard since 2005, and I built this trellis in the front yard in 2008. Now in their 4th year of transplant, the Centennial hops at the left are doing quite well. A year or so ago I also planted some on the right side. They have yet to really mature. Maybe in 2012 this will be totally covered in hops. Harvest time is coming up soon! I'm going to make a wet hop beer for the first time. I will try to take some vids. cheers. www.donosborn.com
Dry hopping a Pliny the Elder clone with 3 oz of hops!

Pliny the Elder tasting - homebrewed clone and the real thing.

My clone of Russian River's awesome double IPA was ready to be compared to the real thing. The color of mine is darker. One unknown is I did not pull the ingredients myself, so if I truly got the ingredients that I requested, I would have thought it would be a touch lighter. However, there is .6 lbs of Medium Crystal and even that much will give it some darkness. The taste is not super similar, but generally similar in the sense that both are very bitter and yet balanced beers with good hop aroma. My hop aroma was probably slightly greater but there could be reasons for that (the bottle could be older than my clone, for one). And mine had a fuller mouthfeel, which sort of makes it more balanced overall. Both are good. Mine is a heck of a lot cheaper though! You can make it for less than $1/12 oz pour. www.donosborn.com
