Leaves change colors, temperatures cool down, hunting seasons open up, and animals become more active. DownWind Outdoors is learning that this can also be the best time of year to call in coyotes! Old dogs may forget a few DWO tricks and young coyotes are all grown up and expanding outward into new territories of their own. The new pack is un-educated and eager for their next meal as alpha dogs run them off and maintain control of their hunting grounds. And when these young coyotes are working together, it can make for some really entertaining video. Andy and Paul set out this morning on the first frost of the year- a really cold and calm morning at a very promising property. They were determined to make up for a late season blunder last year that resulted in an outstanding coyote and kill shot, but nothing else on video. With Andy trying out the all new DWO Signature Series rabbit squealer by Crack, and Pauly taking aim with his .243, this season would start off much better then last season ended. DownWind Outdoors is happy to have the cameras rolling once again while we score our first video since our little "mid-winter break". While Andy and Brian were getting chased off properties by Mastiffs on the loose, (JP) Styles Bridges, IV, a good friend of Eric, got the first shot. There is always something extra hopeful and optimistic about that "new" property and when paired with the mysterious luck of a "guest shooter", the morning was almost certain to bring about some predator hunting action. With Jerrod and Andy heading to the western part of the county, Gaugler went and picked up a guest shooter, Chad Miller, to double the odds against this wise animal. After a couple stands without any luck all-around, the teams united at a familiar property to establish their plan of ambush. Using the same setup technique from the video "Camera Shy Dog", the DownWind Snipers lured another coyote out of the thick gut below for this heavy timber predator hunt. Throwing together some last-minute snow camo, Chad's white bed sheet proved to be all that was needed to fool this hardwoods prowler. With the Crack Rabbit squealing to our left, this coyote came right up close for the 50 yard shot and Chad's first coyote on video. For more information on the calls used in this video, please visit us at www.downwindoutdoors.com This coyote hunt is going to look familiar, as it is almost an exact replica of a hunt from a week prior, "Plain White Sheet". On the weekend that the DownWind Snipers were competing in the NYPHA Predator Contest, the team setup to disprove the common perception that visiting the same property in one week is too much. Only 6 days after their last setup, the whole team got together for their first hunt as a unit on the same property that the "Plain White Sheet" hunt was filmed. Brian Gaugler came out to film the two competing contest teams for their final hunt of the weekend and to try to capture Mike Flanagan's first recorded kill. The DownWind Snipers were divided with Eric Lawler and Jerrod Vila on one team and Mike Flanagan and Andy DelliVeneri on the other. This mid-morning, open-hardwoods textbook hunt resulted in four videos for DownWind Outdoors, but this recorded kill would go to Jerrod Vila who had the open shot. Don't worry; Mike's luck would soon change! The team executed the same setup technique once again and everything went exactly according to plan! Overlooking a thick, nasty orchard gut from wide open timber, the team split up. Eric Lawler was calling from the upwind side of the hill and the shooters, Mike Flanagan and Jerrod Vila, were waiting downwind for a prowling predator. After testing around the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear power plant, we drove about 70-80 miles south, and then east by about 5 miles along the open fields of the Nebraska / Iowa river valley border. The background radiation levels here are 59.2 CPM or 592 over the course of a 10 minute count. The "alert level" is 100 CPM... or 1000 over the course of 10 minutes.. which therefore means there has NOT been a radiation release from the Calhoun nuclear power plant. Eric Lawler and Andy DelliVeneri added an eastern coyote to their stack for Team DownWind Outdoors in the NYPHA Predator contest. The Snipers were in full force on this weekend trying to represent for their first appearance in the three day points competition. It was just a few short months ago, Andy bagged his first coyote in high definition in this very same field on the video hunt "Eagle Eye Andy", but it was Lawler who was soaring the bullets today. After about ten minutes of loud and soft, short and long rabbit squealing, this wise coyote snuck into 40 yards and popped out in the forbidden downwind direction. The decoy distracted, but the nose busted the setup and this coyote ran a distance over 250 yards before Lawler was able to send 55 grains at this contest winner. However, we made a promise to show all footage- for better or worse, 'till coyote death do us part! Sit back and enjoy this eastern coyote hunting video. Calling it quits early for whitetail deer and skipping the muzzleloader weekend, Brian Gaugler and Jerrod Vila re-visited an old favorite, "the horse farm" property, across the street from Gaugler's last hunt, "Send It". With prime weather conditions and coyotes running low on gut piles and lost deer carcasses, the stage was set for yet another episode. Using the Crazed Crack Rabbit distress call, this coyote was brought into about 100 yards in just a matter of minutes. In what should've been another textbook hunt, fit hit the shan in a hurry, and we quickly added this to a list of hunts we'd like to get back! These challenges can be discouraging and frustrating, but in the blink of an eye you can be...ON FIRE.
