Celebrating the Dozynki in Toronto

ANCHOR: Over the weekend Toronto celebrated the Polish Harvest festival with a procession, bits of Polish culture, and food. NTDs Arnaud Camu was to report. STORY: If were going to party, lets party! as Polish people say. Toronto experienced this saying last weekend with the annual Roncesvalles Polish Festival. The celebrations kicked off with a procession in honour of the dozynki, or harvest festival. [Tony Cauch, Chair] Dozynki is a rather interesting festival but its much like many others. We give thanks for the harvest, the bounty of the harvest. We have a wonderful parade, great celebrations involving Bread and Salt, or a local clergy come and bless that and bless the bounty of the harvest for all to consume. Colours, traditional dress and songs were also there to give people a glimpse of Polish culture. [Singer, Folk Note Choir] Its Folk Note from Hamilton and we sing just Polish folk music [] Thats a song for the mountain regions in Poland and that was an original arrangement, and we sing the songs in their orginal arrangement and thats what were proud of. On top of celebrating the dozynki with music, costumes and a procession, what would be a Polish festival in Toronto without a little taste of Polish food? People could savour different Polish meals, like the well-known periogies, smoked ribs, cabbage, and potato cake.
