Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes philosophy professors Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly for a discussion of their book, All Things Shining. Drawing on their reading of Western classics, Dreyfus and Kelly analyze how different epochs offered unique answers to the question of what is sacred and what can provide meaning for human existence. The conversation explores the examples of Homer, Jesus, and Melville to highlight differing paradigms of culture practice. Dreyfus and Kelly then trace the transition to the secular age in which nihilism prevails. Georges Méliès, magicien de profession, décida de de devenir réalisateur suite à la découverte du cinématographe. Cependant, si ses premiers court-métrages n'étaient que des imitation des films des frères Lumière, Méliès, suite à son installation au studio de Montreuil, commença à réaliser des films véritablement uniques. Méliès réalisait deux sortes de court-métrages : les films fantastiques, dans lesquels il laissait libre court à son imagination, et les films historiques, comme celui-ci. A noter que c'est en 1899, date à laquelle fut réalisée cette vidéo, que Dreyfus fut gracié par le président Emile Loubet. Méliès décida alors de profiter de cet évènement afin de retracer en vidéo une affaire qui avait déchiré la France pendant près de cinq années. www.histoire-fr.com
