Inside Story - Drought in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is in the middle of its worst drought in more than 60 years with up to 12 million people facing famine in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti and Somalia. Why is this particular region so vulnerable? Is it the weather or war?

Mandera drought

www.ntv.co.ke The harsh weather conditions that have led to a prolonged drought and hunger in the horn of Africa have not spared Mandera County. In Mandera West District, residents have lost hundreds of livestock and some residents have been constantly on the move in search for water and pasture. And as Richard Chacha reports from Takaba, transporters have resorted to taking half of relief supplies from government, as their cost of distributing the food aid.

James Dyson Award winner and runners-up 2011 - Airdrop overcomes drought inspired by a beetle

Engineering, not magic: the 2011 winner of the James Dyson Award extracts water from thin air. Airdrop is a low cost, self powered, and easy to install solution to the problems of growing crops in arid regions. Inspired by Australia's worst drought in a century, Edward Linacre from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, turned to nature to find ways of capturing moisture from air. Edward studied the Namib beetle, an ingenious species which lives in one of the driest places on earth. With half an inch of rain per year, the beetle can only survive by consuming the dew it collects on the hydrophilic skin of its back in the early mornings. Airdrop borrows this concept, working on the principle that even the driest air contains water molecules which can be extracted by lowering the air's temperature to the point of condensation. It pumps air through a network of underground pipes, to cool it to the point at which the water condenses. Delivering water directly to the roots of plants. Edward's research suggests that 11.5 millilitres of water can be harvested from every cubic meter of air in the driest of deserts. Further iterations of his design will increase the yield of Airdrop. A further £10000 has also be awarded to Edward's university department to support other young engineers keen to follow in his footsteps.

Aug 6, 2011 Oklahoma City First Rain Since Drought Started. Rain stopped long enough to go outside and see what came down in the rain. Got rain sample from top of plastic trash bin. Started raining again toward the end of the video. I had to stop and get out of it. You can come to your own conclusion of what is going on in this video. Keep in mind this meter shows millisieverts per hour. NEWS UPDATE 8/20/2011: Map shows spot with high level of radiation near Fukushima plant 229 millisieverts/year of cumulative radiation in town outside exclusion zone — Exposure limit for ordinary people is 1 millisievert/year In giving specific estimates for 50 locations in the no-entry zone for the first time, [Japan's science] ministry said cumulative radiation of 278 millisieverts was estimated for a location in the town of Okuma, 3 kilometers southwest of the troubled plant. Outside the exclusion zone, cumulative radiation in the town of Namie, 22 km northwest of the plant, was estimated at 115 millisieverts over the five-month period, the highest among locations outside the zone and equivalent to 229 millisieverts over a 12-month period. mdn.mainichi.jp Naturally-occurring "background" radiation exposure www.radiologyinfo.org Copy Right Notice: You may NOT download this video and re-upload it to your channel or any other website.
