The mind that matters

Neuroscientists are providing convincing arguments that the brain has a high degree of plasticity and that in many cases premature cognitive decline is a function of life style rather than age. Marty Kidder teaching Tai Chi for Health experience

My first Tai Chi for Health class as an instructor did not go quite as planned. I would not recommend duplicating this experience. In fact, the title for this talk should be 'how not to begin your Tai Chi for Health teaching journey.' It is Sep 2003. In a year I will be retiring from 30-years of service in the United States Navy. I am currently serving as an advisor to a fleet Admiral on all matters concerning over 100000 Sailors. On the afternoon of my first class I was meeting with the Admiral. Normally our meeting are short informal exchanges of information, concerns and priorities usually lasting less than 15 minutes. On this particular afternoon I took my seat in his office at 2:30 and we began talking. He asked me what preparations I had made for my transition to civilian life. He was preparing for his to a new command in two weeks. We were both transitioning to new and exciting roles in our lives, so we talked. I left the Admirals office at 5:15 that afternoon. My first Tai Chi class was to begin in 15 min and I was a good 20 min away from the class. Should I go straight to class? I'm in my uniform, I don't have my paperwork, and I don't have keys to the parish hall. My wife, Becky left two messages and William, an assistant instructor has been waiting at the parish hall since 4:00, wondering where I was? This class was important. It was not only my initial Tai Chi for Arthritis class it was my Tai Chi schools first TCA class. The school owner was not particularly <b>...</b>

This is a beautiful way to describe the inner strength of tai chi. It also bring me to tell you about this amazing place in Tasmania called River of the Rocks. I felt so much energy I stood on the rocks and performed a stationary Tai Chi @ Work. Let me suggest to you to find a rock that speaks to you, or a tranquil river, practice your tai chi there. Allowing yourself to open your mind to the beauty and the power of nature, and feel the harmony and inner strength with your practice.

Why Tai Chi for Health by Ellen Reitsma, Master Trainer, Oberdorf, Switzerland

Tai Chi was originally a complex martial art. Nowadays most people use tai chi for its health benefits. With the change of focus, the art would serve people better if modified for its purpose. Most research studies on tai chi are based on modified forms. The ideal way to compose a designed program should include health professionals in the respective field and tai chi experts of different styles.

Dr Paul Lam at the Exploring the Depth of Tai Chi for Arthritis Workshop

Tai Chi Principles Tai chi is a sophisticated art with many different styles and forms. Despite the many variations of tai chi, its immense power for improving health and inner energy derives from a set of essential principles. Here I am presenting the most important ones, translated into simple, easy-to-understand language. By bearing them in mind as you learn and practice, you'll be able to do tai chi more effectively right from the beginning. The principles are classified under three categories starting from outward movements to body structure to internal components. 1. Movement Control The control of movements is one of the key elements that makes tai chi effective at improving balance, co-ordination and internal strength. 2. Body Structure Good structure of the body improves the quality of movements and internal components; it connects the movements to the internal. 3. Internal Components Tai chi is an internal art; ultimately we are controlled by our internal aspects, such as the mind and the qi. The power of the mind has immense potential. Integrating mind and body is the ultimate aim of tai chi. When your mind is in good balance, so is your body.

Tai Chi Out of the Box

When Dr Lam asked me to give a talk at the Sydney workshop on the subject of Tai Chi "Out of the Box", I wondered what was he thinking! What did tai chi out of the box mean to him? Did he mean DO tai chi out of the box, like spontaneous qigong- let go of the form and just let the tai chi move you? Did he mean practice tai chi principles outside of the form? Or maybe he meant me to talk about teaching tai chi outside the normal classroom environment? After some thought on 'what does he mean', I came to the realization that although the topic was his idea, it was not his perspective he was interested in, but mine, and here it is, broken down into my three choice of topics: DOING tai chi, NOT-DOING tai chi, and TEACHING tai chi out of the box. Wheeled Chair 24 Forms

Dixie Kindred, tai chi instructor, her medical condition inspired her to create Wheeled Chair 24 Forms. From Dixie: "In February I was diagnoses with Charcot foot. After I was told about what could possibly happen, I began to wonder if I would ever be able to do tai chi standing. I became depressed, as I love doing tai chi and I love teaching it. I did a lot of thinking about what I could possibly do, because I didn't want to be limited to one form seated and not be able to turn and move. I wanted to move around. Finally, the light bulb went off! I wanted to be able to do the 24 form and maybe others, so I purchased a used armless secretary's chair, then purchased a strap and buckle for a seat belt (safety first). I went to the studio where I teach tai chi and proceeded to try out my chair. My student came in and we did the 24 form together with me using my chair. I was able to move, turn and do kicks while in my chair without the extra weight on my feet. It felt great, although at this time I am still standing while I do tai chi. Maybe this can help others to see that things are possible and that they too can feel the freedom of movement with tai chi and the qi flowing, even while seated."

Dr Paul Lam at the Exploring the Depth of Tai Chi for Arthritis Workshop Part II

Category 3. Internal Components of the Tai Chi principles Tai chi is an internal art; ultimately we are controlled by our internal. The power of the mind has immense potential. Integrating mind and body is the ultimate aim of tai chi. When your mind is in good balance, so is your body. A: Loosen or 'song' your joints. You should relax when you do tai chi, but by relax we don't mean let your muscles go floppy. Instead, consciously and gently stretch your joints from within, almost like you're expanding your joints internally. Many people mistranslate the Chinese word 'song' as relaxation; song is both relaxed and loosened. To practice loosening your upper limbs, form a semi-circle with your arms in front of your chest and imagine all your joints are stretching out gently from within. If you stretch out your shoulder joint this way, you should see a dimple at the middle of the shoulder joint. To loosen the spine, imagine it's a piece of string, and that you're gently stretching it from both ends. For the lower limbs, bend your knees and stretch your hips out to form an arch as you crouch. Check in a mirror to see if your thighs are forming an arch. Other lower limb joints will gently expand from within. B: 'Jing' your mind means to focus on your movements. Imagine you are in a quiet and serene environment and your mind will also slow down, becoming quiet and serene. The Chinese word "Jing' in tai chi means mental quietness or serenity. Keep yourself focused on practicing <b>...</b>
