Bharat Ratna Pandit BHIMSEN JOSHI. Born On: February 14, 1922 Died On: January 24, 2011 Panditji Enriched the Kirana gharana by adding his own distinctive style and adapting characteristics from other gharanas; Improvised and combined ragas to create new ragas; Recipient of Bharat Ratna, Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was the numero uno amongst Hindustani classical vocalists. He was considered as the leading light of the Kirana gharana. Bhimsen Joshi is renowned for his unique style and mastery over ragas. Bhimsen Joshi was born in Gadag (Karnataka) on February 14, 1922. His father was a schoolmaster. Bhimsen Joshi developed passion for music from early childhood. As a child, he was deeply moved by a recording of Abdul Karim Khan, the founder father of the ' Kirana gharana'. He left home in 1932 in search of a guru. He wandered for two years and traveled to Bijapur, Pune, and Gwalior. He tutored under Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan in Gwalior. He also went to Calcutta and Punjab before returning home. In 1936, Bhimsen Joshi started his rigorous training under Sawai Gandharva (Pandit Rambhan Kundgolkar), the eminent Khayal singer and student of Abdul Karim Khan at Kundgol, near Gadag. He learnt the basics of Khayal singing and was under Sawai Gandharva's tutelage for several years. Raag Marwa by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan (Sabrang). Vocal support by Ustad Munawar Ali Khan.Bade Ghulam Ali was born in Kasur, Punjab, British India. His father was a famous singer, Ali Baksh Khan, in a West Punjabi family of musical heritage. Short rendition of Raag Jaijaivanti by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan At the age of seven, he learned sarangi and vocal from his paternal uncle Kale Khan, who was a singer, and after his death he trained under his father. Khan started his career by playing sarangi. He became popular after his debut concert in Kolkata. Khan amalgamated the best of four traditions: his own Patiala-Kasur style, the Behram Khani elements of Dhrupad, the gyrations of Jaipur, and the behlavas (embellishments) of Gwalior. His voice had a wide range, spanning three octaves, effortless production, sweetness, flexibility and ease of movement in all tempi. After the partition of India in 1947, Khan returned to his home in Pakistan, but returned to India later to permanently reside there. He did not approve of the partition, stating: "If in every home one child was taught Hindustani classical music this country would never have been partitioned." In 1957, he acquired Indian citizenship and lived at various times in Lahore, Bombay, Calcutta, and Hyderabad. He was reluctant to sing for films, but sang two songs based on ragas Sohni and Rageshree for the 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam, in which his voice was represented as Tansen's by the music director Naushad. Puriya Dhanashree is a rāga in Hindustani classical music. It belongs to the Poorvi Thaat.According to Pandit Bhatkhande all ragas are derived from "thaats" or scales. ************************************************************************************* Raga Puriya Dhanashree. Raga Poorvi, the "type-raga" of Purvi Thaat contains all seven notes (ie Shadja, Rishabh, Gandhar, Madhyam, Pancham, Dhaivat and Nishad). But the rishabh and the dhaivat are komal both in ascent and descent and the madhyam varies from tivra to shuddh whereas the gandhar and the nishaad stay shudh throughout. In Puriya Dhanashree, however, the aarohan or the ascent is as follows - N r GM d N S. This shows that pancham is not used very often in the aarohan thereby making it a shaadav aarohan or an aarohan with six notes. Rishabh and Dhaivat are komal or flat in Raag Puriya Dhanashree wheres the Madhyam is tivra or sharp. The descent or the avarohan is as follows: SN d PMGM r G rs, the descent bears all seven notes with komal Dhaivat and Rishabh and a tivra Madhyam. The vadi of this raga is pancham and the samavadi is shadaj. Raag Purvi's structure is very close to that of raga Puriya Dhanashree therefore in order to differentiate between the two shudhha madhyam is often used in raga purvi unlike the tivra madhayam used in raga Puriya Dhanashree.
