Dyslexia

www.painfreeidaho.com Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing and spelling difficulties. Of people with poor reading skills, 70-80% are likely dyslexic. One in five students, or 15-20% of the population, has a language based learning disability. Dyslexia is probably the most common of the language based learning disabilities. Nearly the same percentage of males and females have dyslexia. Nearly the same percentage of people from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds have dyslexia (see general dyslexia symptoms). Percentages of children at risk for reading failure are much higher in high poverty, language-minority populations who attend ineffective schools. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)* found that approximately 38% of fourth grade students have "below basic" reading skills. These students are below the 40th percentile (performing below the other 60% of their peers) and are at greater than 50% chance of failing the high-stakes, year-end school achievement tests. About three quarters of the children who show primary difficulties with basic reading skill early in reading development can be helped to overcome those difficulties to a large extent. Not all of these children have dyslexia (see symptoms of dyslexia in children). Less than 1 of the children with reading disabilities are receiving school services for their reading disability. The causes for reading difficulty may be neurobiological (caused by differences in the ...

Dyslexic Me( poem)

I was dignosed with a "learning disability" as a young child however before that my parents were told I was mentally handicapp and that I would never make it pass the 8th grade.I did make it pass the 8th grade. In fact, I graduated high school at the age of 20 and went on to graduate from College with a degree in Special Education. As adult, I view this as the greatest gift god has ever given because it has lead to greater tolerance and understanding of the world around, it has given me patience and a lead me to a career as a Special Education Teacher. Many people get learning disabilities and mental handicaps confused because of political correctness and inconsistent practices in the understanding and dealings of these lifetime difficulties. This has led to problems for me. So here are some definitions: Learning Disability: A person who has an average (100) or above average IQ and a severe deficit in achievement. formly known as minmal brain damage BEFORE 1969. MENTAllY DISABLED: An IQ of 70 or below and has difficultly functioning in society. I hope as an educator this enlightens some people out there.

Dyslexic Learners Dramatically Improve Reading Skills with Fast ForWord

In this study, Nadine Gaab and her colleagues investigated which regions of children's brains were active in response to rapid auditory stimuli, determining whether the activation patterns were similar in children with dyslexia and children with typically developing reading skills, whether these differences could be remediated, and whether the remediation would results in changes in language and reading scores. Pre-tests showed that the students with dyslexia had reading skills that were significantly below the reading scores of their typically developing peers. After using the Fast ForWord product, students' reading and language skills were re-evaluated. The students had made statistically-signiticant improvements in sight-word reading and passage comprehension as well as their total language skills and phonological awareness. In addition, the students' cortical activity was re-evaluated. In children with dyslexia, there are no regions in the brain where they have significant differences between the cortical responses to fast transitions versus the cortical responses to slow transitions. After remediation, several regions were found where the differences in activation increased -- more similar to the activation patterns of children with typical development. These results show that the neural circuitry of children with developmental dyslexia is plastic -- it can be changed. Educators: Learn About Dyslexia Now

Recent scientific discoveries have completely changed the way we understand dyslexia. It is no longer a mystery. Unfortunately, most teachers and school administrators are not aware of the new findings. They still follow the myths and guess work of the past. Even those in special education positions do not understand dyslexia. Millions of children are hurt each day by well-meaning but ignorant educators. I was a teacher for 25 years before I learned about dyslexia. It was embarrasing to realize I had not given this large group of children the proper intervention.
