MORE 2009 NYIAS @ INSIDELINE.COM: www.edmunds.com AMG, Mercedes' in-house hot-rod shop, might have recently called an end to the horsepower war it helped instigate, but the 518-hp 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG indicates the company is not exactly ready to lay down its arms completely. True, this new model, which will be unveiled at the New York auto show, brings only an additional 11 hp to the E-Class hot rod, compared to the E63 it replaces. We grew accustomed to great leaps in power every time the E-Class AMG was renewed. The big 6.2-liter that arrived for 2007 brought a 38-hp bump from the previous car. And by slapping a supercharger on the 5.5-liter in 2003, AMG added a whopping 120 hp to the existing E55 AMG. So, by adding the powertrain of the SL63, AMG might not be catapulting over the new horsepower heavy in the class, the 556-hp Cadillac CTS-V, but 518 is still a staggering amount of juice. And its bark is as gnarly as its bite. An AMG official started up a 2010 E63 at a sneak peek of the car in Affalterbach, Germany, and gave the throttle a few quick stabs. It sounded very perturbed. In addition to the 518-hp rip-snorter of an engine, the E63 AMG also snatches from the SL63 its seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, this unit has no torque converter. Instead it uses a wet-clutch system in which a series of clutches (six in total) allows for quicker shifting and a more direct connection between the engine and the <b>...</b>

The tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz is rapidly approaching its peak in terms of horsepower, so cleaning up emissions while maintaining performance is the key for the future. This 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG spotted testing on the Nürburgring could be the first of AMG's new green machines. Mercedes-Benz officials have gone on record saying that all of the company's future engines will be turbocharged, so it's likely that AMG will follow suit. With that in mind, this sedan might not be an E63 at all, as the addition of one turbo (or maybe two) would likely mean a smaller-displacement engine. Either way, there will be at least 500 hp and a healthy amount of low-end torque to ensure that this super sedan can keep pace with its German rivals. Like the other E-Class sedan prototypes we've seen before, this test mule reveals only evolutionary changes to the overall shape of the midsize sedan. A redesigned set of headlights is the most dramatic change, but this AMG version also gets a deeper airdam with a pair of brake-cooling ducts at each front corner. They feed air to a serious-looking set of drilled rotors fitted with oversize calipers. There's not much of a body kit, and the rear fascia shows only minor changes compared to the current model. Mercedes - Benz E63 AMG 2011 The hand-built, DOHC, 6.2-liter V-8 from the previous edition returns boasting 11 more horsepower (now 518 hp at 6800 rpm) yet also a 12-percent increase in fuel efficiency. All that naturally aspirated horsepressure is a wonderful thing on its own, but for 2010 it flows through Mercedes' Speedshift MCT 7-speed automatic. Dispensing with a conventional torque converter in favor of a "wet start-up clutch," the MCT can crack off shifts in just 100 milliseconds (in manual mode). Four shift modes are available, with Sport Plus perhaps the most impressive. AMG developed its own V8 engine (dubbed M156 in development) for the DTM series. This naturally aspirated V8 will also be used to replace most of the "55" models.
