A musical journey of Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is a state in north-eastern India. For more information you can visit. www.arunachalpradesh.nic.in Note: Many people have expressed their concerns regarding the portrayal of the state as unknown to its own countrymen. I would like to thank those for their inputs made through several comments. Actually the video is not directed to Indians rather it is directed to Non-indians, as I realized that the state is pretty much unknown outside India. In the process of making the video I have assumed that at least every educated Indian would be aware of the states and geography of India. I guess I was rather ambiguous in informing as to who my intended audience was.

Incredible India-Odissi Classical Dance (HD)-Part 1-Mangalacharan by Sujata Mohapatra

Odissi is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It originates from the state of Orissa, in eastern India. It is the oldest surviving dance form of India on the basis of archaeological evidences. The classic treatise of Indian dance, Natya Shastra, refers to it as Odra-Magadhi. First century BCE bas-reliefs in the hills of Udaygiri (near Bhubaneshwar) testify to its antiquity. Traditional Odissi repertoire consists of: Mangalacharan- An invocational piece. After paying homage to Lord Jagganath a sloka (hymn) in praise of some God or Goddess is sung, the meaning of which is brought out through dance. Mangalacharan also includes the 'bhumi pranam', begging forgiveness of mother earth for stamping on her, and the 'trikhandi pranam' or threefold salutation - above the head to the Gods, in front of the face to the gurus and in front of the chest to the audience. Battu Nrutya- A dance piece offered to the Lord of dance - God Shiva in his 'Batuka Bhairava' form. This piece brings out the essence of Odissi. The interrelationship between temple sculptural art and Odissi dance is established with an array of sculpturesque poses taken directly from the innumerable dancing sculptures adorning the temples of Orissa. These poses are stringed together with steps in different rhythms. Pallavi- A pure dance item in which a raga is elaborated through eye movements, body postures & intricate footwork. Pallavi literally means "blossoming". This is applicable not only to the dance ...

The Last Maneater (Killer Tigers of India)

The only place on earth where Man is not at the top of the food chain. The Last Maneater is a spectacular documentary about the last tigers in the world to hunt, kill, and eat humans. They live in the Sunderbans, gnarled fingers of thick impenetrable mangrove forest swamps in eastern India. It's a place where the daily quest for a net full of fish, or even an armload of firewood gathered from the forest floor, can prove fatal. Here, up to 80 people every year are killed and eaten by tigers. The villages here are filled with orphans... and widows. And people who have harrowing tales of survival. An adult Bengal tiger can weigh as much as 500 pounds. When it decides to attack, the results are almost always lethal. Guns and armor are of little use in this area where a stealth attack from the rear can occur with no warning. It is the reality of life in the Sunderbans. People here understand the risk. They understand... that in the Sunderbans, humans are not the most dominant animal. That if a tiger decides to kill... it can... and will. This is a place where tigers don't live in fear of people. Here... tigers reign supreme. All rights belong to The National Geographic Society.

INDIAN ARMY ON WORLD'S HIGHEST & MOST INHOSPITABLE BATTLEFIELD - SIACHEN GLACIER

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalaya Mountains at about 35.5°N 77.0°E, just east of the Line of Control between India-Pakistan. India controls most of the Siachen Glacier itself, including most tributary glaciers. At 70 km long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It falls from an altitude of 5753 m above sea level at its head at Indira Col on the China border down to 3620 m at its terminus. The Siachen Glacier lies immediately south of the great watershed that separates China from the Indian subcontinent in the extensively glaciated portion of the Karakoram that is sometimes called the "Third Pole." The glacier lies between the Saltoro Ridge immediately to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east. The Saltoro Ridge originates in the north from the Sia Kangri peak on the China border in the Karakoram range. The crest of the Saltoro Ridge's altitudes range from 5450 to 7720 m. The major passes on this ridge are, from north to south, Sia La at 5589 m, Bilafond La at 5450 m, and Gyong La at 5689 m. The average winter snowfall is 10.5 m and temperatures can dip below −60 °C. Including all tributary glaciers, the Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 sq. km The glacier's region is the highest battleground on earth, where India and Pakistan have fought intermittently since April 1984. Sanjukta Panigrahi - Odissi - Ardhanareeshwara Stuti (1/3)

Rare footage of the "Ardhanareeshwara Stuti" performed by the late Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi in the Odissi style of classical dance from eastern India. This dance composition, based on Sanskrit verses by Adi Shankaracharya, beautifully decribes the half-man and half-woman fusion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The virile, masculine right-side is adorned with ashes, snakes, and flying dreadlocks. In contrast, the delicate, feminine left-side is bathed in turmeric, sandalwood, champa flowers, and jewelry. Thus, the iconography of Ardhaneerashwara reflects the coexistence of both masculine and feminine aspects in the complete being. Music was set in Ragamalika and Talamalika by Sri Raghunath Panigrahi. Choreography was set by the late Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

L. Shankar - Windy Morning

In 1979, Frank Zappa took a shine to an Eastern Indian rock/jazz violinist, L. Shankar. So much so that he produced an album with him, "Touch Me There." Not only does Frank produce, but he also co-writes half of the album and performs on one cut, "Dead Girls of London." So, not surprisingly, this disc sounds like much of the material Zappa was releasing around that time, even though it is technically a "Shankar" album. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Physics in India, Shankar moved to America in 1969 and earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. Here he met jazz musicians Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Garrison, and John McLaughlin while working as a teaching assistant and concert master of the University Chamber Orchestra. In 1975 Shankar and McLaughlin founded Shakti, a pioneering, groundbreaking and highly influential east-meets-west collaboration, with a fluid sound that managed to successfully combine seemingly incompatible traditions. His first solo album, Touch Me There, was produced by Frank Zappa in 1979.[3] Shankar founded his own band - The Epidemics, in 1982, with the composer Caroline. He released three albums with the band. During the 1980s, Shankar recorded periodically as a leader, doing both jazz-based material and Indian classical music. His 1980 release of the album Who's To Know on ECM introduced the unique sound of his own invention, the ten-string, stereophonic double violin. This instrument, designed by Shankar and built by noted ...

ANDAMAN ARMY - INDIA'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE BASE - FULL

India is planning to convert its Andaman and Nicobar tri-services command into an major amphibious warfare hub by setting up full-fledged training facilities and basing a sea-and-land fighting unit to provide teeth to its capability to take the battle into enemy shores. With over 550 islands dotting the strategically located spot in the Bay of Bengal with near 500 of them still uninhabited, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands provide the Indian armed forces the ideal landscape to train its troops on amphibious warfare, which entails landing on the beaches of the enemy territory and taking the gun fight right into the mainland. "There are plans to have an amphibious warfare training facility in the Andaman and Nicobar islands just as the jungle and guerrilla warfare school that the Army has in the North East. "The hundreds of virgin islands here provide the ideal training facility for the troops to gain expertise in the specialist operations," a senior officer from the Andaman and Nicobar Command told PTI here. The tri-services command here, which came up in 2001 after a need for a joint all-service formation was felt, already has surface units to support amphibious operations, which are difficult manoeuvres considering that the troops are exposed to greater risks while entering open landscape in hostile territories. The Command here already has naval surface vessels such as a large Landing Ship Tank (LST) that can carry about 220 fully armed troops along with six trucks, 10 ...

Tsunami Hits Thailand & South East Asia!

Dedicated to all 2004 December 26th Boxing Day Tsunami Victims, families, those injured, and those otherwise affected. The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe caught on tape. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an earthquake off the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed 230000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries, 170000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. The disaster promoted a global outpouring of sympathy, with governments, individuals and corporations pledging more than $13 billion in aid. According to UN database, nearly two years after donors pledged billions to help the victims only half the money had been spent. Of the half a million people left homeless by the disaster, only a third have been permanently rehoused. The ...

Sant Ravidas

Guru Ravidas (also Raidas, Rohidas and Ruhidas in eastern India) was a north Indian Sant mystic of the bhakti movement who was active in the 15th century CE. Venerated in the region of Punjab and Haryana as well as the Indian state of Maharashtra. His devotional songs and verses made a lasting impact upon the bhakti movement. A shoemaker of the Chamar caste, forty of his earliest songs were to be included in the Sikh anthology Adi Granth. There is also a larger body of hymns passed on independently. Ravidas was subversive in that his devotionalism implied a levelling of the social divisions of caste and gender, yet ecumenical in that it tended to promote crossing of sectarian divides in the name of a higher spiritual unity. He taught that one is distinguished not by one's caste (jati) but by one's actions (karma) and that every person has the right to worship God and read holy texts. In the 19th and 20th centuries there emerged a distinct sect, the Ravidasis, for whom he is the chief Guru. Ravidasis are mainly Punjabi Chamar caste and the Ravidassia movement is a social/religious identity. A temple was built at his birthplace. Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated with a procession, bearing the portrait of the great ascetic in the main streets and bazaars of the city with music. Special pujas and feasts are arranged in temples dedicated to Guru Ravidas.
