Ziegfeld Follies Girls "Tribute to Doris Eaton"
Doris Eaton Travis, March 14, 1904 May 11, 2010 Among the Last of the Ziegfeld Girls, has passed away at 106. In her book about Mrs. Travis, Century Girl (2006), Lauren Redniss quoted a Chicago critic: Mine eyes are yet dim with the luminous beauty of a girl named Doris. Doris was born March 14, 1904, in Norfolk, VA. In recent years, Doris Eaton Travis had returned to the public eye. As the last surviving Ziegfeld Girl, she was been featured in several books and documentaries about the Ziegfeld Follies and her other stage endeavors. Eaton Travis had also returned to the stage as a featured performer in benefit performances for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Ziegfeld Follies were a series of elaborate theatrical productions on Broadway in New York City from 1907 through 1931. They became a radio program in 1932 and 1936 as The Ziegfeld Follies of the Air. Inspired by the Folies Bergères of Paris, the Ziegfeld Follies were conceived and mounted by Florenz Ziegfeld, reportedly at the suggestion of his then-wife, the entertainer Anna Held. Some famous Follies girls were Josephine Baker, Louise Brooks, Barbara Stanwyck, Mae Murray and Billie Dove.
