It is a love affair between idea, form and environment. It is eco-design. A concept that has evolved over the years and today has come into its own. At first eco-design just meant recycling says Anne-Marie Boutin, President of the Agency for the Promotion of Industrial Creation. "We then realised that how we process and what we make with the material is just as important as the material itself. Most designers begin a remodel by choosing what to trash. Petz Scholtus chose what to collect from the trash to be upcycled (recycled for a higher use). When Scholtus bought her Barcelona apartment in 2006 it had no plumbing nor electricity, though it had some choice trash, like the long piece of glass she stopped her construction crew from throwing away. With two sawhorses (recovered from the street) for legs, it became her dining room table. Other furniture was scavenged directly from the street, like a chair she later covered with old newspapers (mostly from Scholtus' native Luxembourg) and her ubiquitous Bidon lamps made from used jerry cans and a CFL lightbulb. Much of the kitchen furniture- the shelves, island and FSC-certified countertop- was bought from IKEA, though the style-making piece are the cabinets constructed from old wine boxes (some of which Scholtus and her partner drank themselves). Granada Tile's Echo Collection uses a technique developed in France in the late 1870s. The key elements are the plate, the crown, the lid, the design mold, the ladle, and the press. In addition to a vast collection of historic bronze design molds, Granada Tile also make new molds constantly so clients can match their tile to their style. Each area of each tile is handpoured. We have bestsellers that we keep in stock. We also do custom tiles. Clients use our online Echo Collection Catalog to color their tiles. Each tile is pressed to 3000 PSI. This fuses the layers and makes the tile very strong. The finished tile is 5/8" of an inch thick and the color layer is 1/8". Once the tile has cured, it will be packed, shipped, and installed. The result is a floor or wall that will last a life time. Because of the handmade process and natural ingredients, these tiles exude an organic beauty.
