DVD Description Looks at the processes that are fundamental to all ecosystems. First the concepts of primary productivity, trophic levels, food chains, energy pyramids and the flow of energy through ecosystems are introduced. The program then explains how carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and water cycle through ecosystems and how human activities can disrupt these cycles and throw them out of balance leading to accelerated eutrophication in lakes in the case of phosphorous imbalances and global warming in the case of carbon imbalances.

The program then examines the pollution of water by biodegradable and non-biodegradable pollutants, pathogens, drugs and thermal pollution sources. Deforestation, desertification and other habitat destruction is then addressed along with the impact of such destruction on threatened and endangered species.

Mathis Wackernagel, co-creator of the Ecological Footprint, describes how this tool lets us calculate the amount of natural resources necessary to support our collective expenditure. Pointing to our current over-expenditure, he explains how the ecological footprint can help us avoid ecological bankruptcy.

Chapter 1 What's Wrong With Architecture FIRST EARTH is a documentary about the movement towards a massive paradigm shift for shelter -- building healthy houses in the old ways, out of the very earth itself, and living together like in the old days, by recreating villages. An audiovisual manifesto filmed over the course of 4 years and 4 continents, FIRST EARTH makes the case that earthen homes are the healthiest housing in the world; and that since it still takes a village to raise a healthy child, it is incumbent upon us to transform our suburban sprawl into eco-villages, a new North American dream. DVD Description Our Aquatic Biomes DVD begins by looking at the characteristics common to all aquatic environments. The program then examines the littoral, limnetic and profundal zones of freshwater lakes, the seasonal cycling of O2 and nutrients, and the difference between oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes before observing how life changes along the course of rivers and explaining the ecological importance of wetlands. The photic, aphotic, and benthic ocean zones are then described and marine habitats such as tide pools, kelp forests, coral reefs, and vent communities explored.

DVD Description Our Competition, Predation and Symbiosis DVD first describes the concepts of community, coevolution and ecological niche before looking at how competition results from overlapping niches. The program then examines predator-prey relationships and the various adaptations such as camouflage, warning coloration, mimicry and chemical warfare that have evolved as a result of these relationships. Symbiotic relationships such as parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism are then explored. A discussion of primary and secondary succession concludes the program.

This video was prepared in 2003 in celebration of the Media Ecology Association's 5th Anniversary, and contains a special tribute to Neil Postman, who was the Guest of Honor at the event, which was held on September 4, 2003 at Fordham University (one month before he passed away). While celebratory in nature, the video also serves as a good introduction to the media ecology perspective, and Neil Postman's specific approach to the study of media as environments.
