Eid Mubarak: Blessings to all
Eid Mubarak (Arabic: عيد مبارك, Bengali: ঈদ মোবারক, Persian/Urdu: عید مُبارک) is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The phrase translates into English as "blessed festival", and can be paraphrased as "may you enjoy a blessed festival". Muslims wish each other Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer. This celebration continues until the end of the day for Eid ul-Fitr (or al-Fitr) and continues a further three days for Eid ul-Adha (or Al-Adha). However, in the social sense people usually celebrate that is the Eid ul-Fitr in the same length as Eid ul-Adha, such as family visits, and exchange greetings, such as "Eid Mubarak". It is notable that saying these exact words is a cultural tradition influenced by deep roots of religion; however, it is not part of any religious obligations. Speakers of Arabic might also add "kul 'am wantum bikhair." Which means "[May] you be well every year" Eid refers to the occasion itself, and Mubarak means 'Blessed'. Throughout the Muslim world there are numerous other ways of greeting for Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The Companions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad used to say to each other when they met on Eid ul-Fitr: Taqabbalallâhu minnâ wa minkum Which means "[May] God accepts from us and from you"[citation needed] which means "may God accept from us and you [our fasts and deeds]". Egyptians celebrated Eid el Fitr in their usual manner and traditions by baking homemade cookies, buying new clothes, going for walks and visiting friends and family. On the streets of Cairo, we witnessed the usual clamor and overcrowding leading one to question whether any lessons had been learned from the January 25 revolution. A Cairo resident told us "nothing is different than last year. The only difference is the conditions of the country. We hope that God would help the country to get through and become in a better state." "I don't think there is any link between the social traditions and the sense of revolution and change. There may be a bigger feeling of joy due to liberty." said another local. A woman told us that she is celebrating Eid the way she's always done. Butchers across Egypt prepare for Eid
Butchers in the Egyptian capital of Cairo are preparing to cater fresh meat to families for the Eid al-Adha festivities which begin on November 6. According to Holy Scriptures, Eid al-Adha marks the event where Prophet Abraham willingly obeyed God's request to sacrifice his son Ismael, but was told at the last minute to replace the child with a sheep, lending to the tradition of sheep slaughtering. This year, however, business during the Eid holidays isn't as prosperous as it used to be due to the toll the revolution took on the country's economy. "[Sales] have gone down fifty percent. Of course it's gone down because of the informal souks and because of the imported meat. That's reduced the sale of local meat. But that has also reduced the prices. Prices were very high because we have very low [meat] production in Egypt. So sales are now down fifty percent. One reason is the revolution, and the other is the imported meat that comes from Ethiopia," says shop owner Abdul Basset. A rise in prices hasn't stopped shoppers from stocking up for the holidays. "Yes it's expensive, but we've become accustomed to buying meat. There's no way you can have the main Eid holiday without meat. It's a necessity," said Madame Afaf. Araby, a butcher at Baqaly's butcher shop says that families this year have purchased smaller sheep to slaughter but actually pre-purchase meat to use in meals. Muslims all over the world are gearing up to celebrate Eid al-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice, with family and friends on Sunday. In the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, families hit the shops to buy clothes for their children, while the local fairground was being readied to welcome the next few days of fun for families. While Sunnis celebrate Eid on Sunday, Shiite Iraqis will observe the holiday on Monday. Meanwhile, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, shoppers flocked to the markets to purchase sweet treats and nuts to offer to visiting friends and relatives, while residents of the Gaza Strip, browsed for potential sheep to slaughter, an important ritual during Eid al-Adha. The tradition of sacrificing an animal during this holiday commemorates the time when God ordered Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ismael but changed the order at the last minute to a sheep instead. Libyans have another reason to celebrate, following the death of former leader Muammer Qaddafi, as they mark the first Eid free of his rule. They too were shopping for sacrificial animals ahead of the holidays, despite the high costs. "Look at this shop selling sheep. I think it's too expensive for the price. As Muslims Celebrate Eid Somalia Struggles
Eid al-Fitr dawned on Somalia but for many people it did little to alleviate their terrible conditions. Most of Mogadishu's residents have been displaced by war, and thousands of southern inhabitants were forced to relocate to the capital to escape the tough drought that hit their areas and killed their cattle. They hoped to find in the capital some respite from starvation. Nuria Moallem is just one of the people who recently fled from southern Somalia because of the famine. Two of her children died from starvation a few days ago and has nothing to cheer about during the holiday, especially as she is barely able to feed her remaining children. "We live in very hard conditions and I cannot feel the joy of this Eid. I look forward to getting the basics necessities at home" she said. This woman and many other families in this camp, are up against their greatest challenges. Their lives depend on aid through charity. As they celebrate Eid amidst this scenario they are hopeful that the next holiday will bring their families some happiness. Despite the odds, relief agencies are still trying to help families in need. In this camp, which the World Assembly of Muslim Youth supervises, clothes have been distributed to hundreds of poor families. Al-Shabab, Somalia's Islamist rebel group, have given Al Jazeera exclusive access to film them in Mogadishu during the end of Ramadan. Ajram was born in Ashrafiyeh, Lebanon on May 16th, 1983.Ajram and her family are Eastern Orthodox Christians.. She started singing at the age of eight, when she appeared for the first time in 1991 at a singing contest for kids on national television in Lebanon. In 1995, at the age of twelve, Nancy Ajram took part in the entertainment show, Noujoum Al-Moustakbal, ("Stars of the Future"), a Lebanese television musical competition, winning a gold medal in the Tarab category after singing a song by Umm Kulthum. Shortly afterwards Nancy released her first album, Mihtagalak ("I Need You') in 1998, with most of its songs holding a pure Tarab style.
