This is a video summary I made to document my musical research as a 2009-10 recipient of the Creative Arts Award from the University of Virginia. My goal was to compose and record original electroacoustic compositions using the software programs Abelton Live and Max/MSP. This is the first song off of my upcoming album to be released April 17th, 2010. I will be posting a new track every week on my myspace page (www.myspace.com/grovemiller). There I will also have a full written report of my research including diagrams that better explain how everything is configured. The ElectroAcoustic Orchestra live on 06/16/2008 This is the 1st video taken of what was essentially at that time the first live performance of the 1st two members of what is now known as the Baltimore SDIY Group. That's me, Logan Mitchell Sr, playing the Roland SH-101 analog synthesizer, along with my friends Dave Vosh playing his Doepfer A-100 series analog modular synthesizer in a Theremin-style configuration & Barry Allen playing the congas. Barry was our first & to date our only drummer. That was Barry's first & last time playing with our group in a public performance. This video was taken of us at The Gallery's Open Mic night in The Rotunda Mall here in Baltimore MD on 06/16/2008. Unfortunately that was our first & last performance there as The Gallery moved to another location after that. I just decided to call us the ElectroAcoustic Orchestra so as to have a title for this video file. Around July of 2008, we were then known as The Baltimore SDIY Variable Ensemble, and thanks to this video it helped us get our first performance gig at the American Visionary Art Museum here in Baltimore MD in July of 2008 as the former Baltimore SDIY Variable Ensemble. One of our groupmembers, Joe Wall, saw the video & invited us to play at that venue where he worked at that time as the Maintenance Manager. Amalgamation is an electro-acoustic music which is conceived for sound diffusion in concert hall or large venue. It is a mixture of a diverse collection of musical elements and cultures. I exploit their relations and contradictions and combine them together to create a surrealistic environment. The piece consists of a composed folk tune in a Chinese style, ambient sound recorded at Manchester Piccadilly and sounds generated by computer processing. They all have extremely different 'musical' qualities in terms of rhythm, contour, harmony and structure. Each element is produced through a unique means. The Chinese folk tune is played by the piano, which is the most popular Western musical instrument. It is a sound purposely produced by the physical action of a man-made device. The computer processed sounds, on the other hand, are generated electronically. Here, imitative sounds of church bells and Eastern gongs are produced through computer manipulation. The content of the ambient material includes voices and sounds from nature, human and other living things, and also the random sounds produced by any sound-producing objects. I incorporate all of these common elements in our lives in order to produce an environment which is not commonly found in our daily life. I recommend you to switch off the light when listen.

Needs a fret dress, setup and decent strings, but I'm liking it so far! The preamp is brittle sounding, and lacks bottom octave - the Phil Jones preamp smooths it out nicely. Charlie Wilson sounds so amazing on this it's impossible to concentrate on playing - check out the other version on youtube without me messing about. This is one of the best tracks of the 70's IMHO. It's been too long - will get back to posting soon.
