This is a project done for a 3rd year Electronic Engineering course. It was the design of a traffic light system for a main road (East-West) with a right turn arrow, and a side road with a pedestrian crossing. The design was split into three parts which were the design of a 5V power supply, the design of the digital and timing circuit and the design of a lighting control circuit. The lighting control circuit was used to drive 10 LED's from the digital circuit. In addition to this, it was used to drive AC Lamps for the EW Intersection. A light sensor was used to run the lamps at 60% power during the night (power saving mode). No microcontrollers were allowed for the design. The digital circuit consists of 6 Integrated circuits (timer, counter, decoder, logic gates). The Power supply has one op-amp IC, and the lighting control consists of another 6 Integrated circuits (op-amp, gates, timers and optoisolators). Sorry for the bad video quality, not much I could do with my phone camera...

A follow on from some of the recent blogs that have involved basic thermal heatsink calculation. This time around Dave takes you though the basic theory of thermal design and how heatsink calculations work. Then there are some real world temperature measurements to see how close to the theory we get. How do you read a heatsink thermal response graph? What is emissivity? It's all here in thermal design 101.

To launch their debut album 'Shallow Bed' (released 5th March), Dry the River created a unique series of string art posters to allow fans to hear the album in full for the first time. Twelve string art posters are placed around London, each one representing a track from the album and depicting an animal. At the end of the string, the band used old fashioned Tin Can telephones to allow passers-by to listen to a song. The band created the posters in collaboration with FOAM in-house craft-technologist Sophie Yeoman. This film shows the posters being put together and hung around London's streets. Sophie hand built each poster and fitted them with an Arduino / Wave Shield combo wired through the string to a speaker concealed in the bottom of a tin-can. Each poster took around 20 hours to complete.

Reddit this: goo.gl Here's what Apple sued for, word-for-word: • A rectangular product shape with all four corners uniformly rounded; • the front surface of the product dominated by a screen surface with black borders; • as to the iPhone and iPod touch products, substantial black borders above and below the screen having roughly equal width and narrower black borders on either side of the screen having roughly equal width; • a display of a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners; and • a bottom row of square icons (the "Springboard") set off from the other icons and that do not change as the other pages of the user interface are viewed. The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, NOVEMBER 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution's collateral damage—25 million tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green 'race to the top' where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable. Our production partner on the electronics film is the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry. Complete instructions for this Weekend Projects can be found at makeprojects.com BEAM is a type of robot design that allows you to create little robot/robot-like critters and vehicles mainly using basic analog components (resistors, transistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs). The challenge is to try and get as much robot-like behavior using these components. BEAM is an acronym for "Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, Mechanics" and these four elements serve as inspiration in all BEAM design. For these two projects, we'll use what's known as a "solar engine" (Type 1 "FLED" variety), some store bought and scavenged electronics, and laser-cut and gold-leafed wheels to build some stylin' little Solar Chariots. Let the build begin!

www.euronews.com It's never been easier and cheaper to sew small electronic components into wearable clothing. In this issue of Futuris, we are diving into the world of smart textiles that help improve health and safety. On a small fishing boat crossing a fjord near Trondheim in Norway the nets have to be checked for the overnight catch. Eldar has been a professional fisherman for over 40 years. It is one of the riskiest jobs, thousands of fishermen around the world lose their lives every year - mostly by falling overboard and drowning. "When the weather is bad, when there's strong wind, it's easy to fall overboard. That happened to me, and to some people I knew who didn't survive," said Eldar Aukan. "It's easy to fall out, and very hard to get back - your clothes get heavy when they're wet, and the water is very cold," he added. The fisherman has a manual remote control to stop the boat's engine in case of an accident. Eldar has to remember to carry it with him at all times. He also needs some means to alert rescuers and help him stay afloat if he falls overboard. Integrating electronics into the protective outfit can make all these emergency tools wearable and impossible to forget. At Trondheim's swimming pool scientists are testing the first prototype of a smart safety vest, developed as part of a European Union research project. It has sealed sensors that trigger a number of life-saving measures in case of an accident, including an inflating buoyant 'lung' and an <b>...</b>
