Vicious Elephant Seal battle on South Georgia

A huge 5-ton bull Elephant Seal challenges and attempts to take ownership of the beach from the beach master. A mighty battle then takes place on the crowded shores of St Andrews Bay, home to over 150000 pairs of King Penguins. Filmed at St Andrew Bay in South Georgia by New Zealand Nature Photographer Richard Sidey. More footage and photographs at www.richardsidey.com

Curious Baby Elephant Seal

A baby elephant seal curious, brave, and too comfortable with and among people it turns out. Petermann island, Antarctica. Below is a longer description in response to viewers' comments. Antarctica is remote wilderness (yes, even the Peninsula that gets the lion's share of small but increasing tourist numbers). There is no baiting, feeding, tracking or approaching the animals to facilitate interaction with tourists. All close interaction happens by chance and is initiated by the animal itself. The number of people landing at each site is closely monitored (no more than 100 allowed at once) and they leave no footprint (no flags, food, or any waste). Petermann island is visited mainly for the scenery and large bird colonies (two penguin kinds, blue-eyed shags etc.). Not seals. Seals in large numbers are more easily observed on the beaches in the sub-antarctic islands. That is why I was thrilled by this spontaneous encounter with the baby seal on a not-so-large piece of rock. Equipment used: Canon HF100 camera with a Raynox 6600 wide angle lens. [this rewording ought to satisfy viewers that no seals were annihilated using no halo weapons.]

EXPEDITION: Elephant seal comes for a closer look

Visit www.earth-touch.com for a closer look at the wonders of the natural world. After our fantastic morning at Fortuna Bay we sailed east to King Edward Point, Grytviken, where we would anchor for most of the night next to the research station set up in this natural harbour at South Georgia in the South Atlantic. This is where the Antarctic explorer Edward Shackleton is buried a place that is incredible in its beauty. It holds somewhat grim reminders of the history that started this tiny settlement. On one side of the bay sits a rusting and ramshackle skeleton of an old whaling station; huge piles of reddened chains bear testimony to the thousands of whales that were processed here. Now, King Edward Point is devoted entirely to scientific research much of which will go towards preserving the whale and seal species whose numbers were previously so reduced. We were once again lucky with the weather. Apart from the occasional snow squall, the sun was out, still above the high mountains ringing the bay and sparking off the numerous icebergs. A breathtaking place. On the lower slopes tussock grass provided a little shelter for hundreds of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) and the beaches were dotted with the liquid-eyed elephant seals (Mirounga leonina). Crew member Pierre Minnie and I went out on a Zodiac boat towards an iceberg, hoping that the water would be calm enough for us to film the intricacies and colours of these huge blocks of ice. On January 30, 2009 the first baby elephant seal was born at Race Rocks in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It is probably the first to be born in Canada, as Southern Vancouver Island has been the location for some time of the most northerly haulout for this marine mammal. Two days later another Elephant seal pup was born in the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve on the Middle Island of the Archipelago. Elephant Seals - San Simeon

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours the Elephant Seal Rookery at Piedras Blancas in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located just 9 miles north of San Simeon, this is the best place to view elephant seals in California. Join Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips at this amazing vista point and learn more about these giant pinnipeds. Located on a convenient vista turnout right off Highway 1, the Elephant Seal Rookery is home to a colony of between 7 and 10 thousand northern elephant seals. Though they live off the California coast, northern elephant seals migrate twice a year, sometimes traveling as far as the Aleutian Islands or Hawaii. Male elephant seals can weigh up to 9000 pounds, dive at depths of up to a mile and hold their breath for almost 2 hours. While at sea, elephant seals eat a diet of fish and squid. On land, they do not eat. They survive off their rich blubber, often spraying sand on their backs to keep cool. Docents are on hand daily to answer questions about the colony, who can be seen mating, giving birth, fighting for females and molting, depending on the time of year you visit. In January, the females give birth to a single pup after an 11-month pregnancy. Only half make it to adulthood. Hunted for their blubber, they neared extinction during the 1800s. They are named for their trunklike, inflatable snouts. Next time you're driving along scenic highway 1, check out the elephant seals. It's free ...

Something strange is happening to elephant seals along California's coast. Each year, half of the seal pups disappear, and what happens to them is a mystery. Have to cross a fast flowing stream feed by melting ice to see these Southern Elephant Seals. The big males arrive early to claim their territory. The females arrive shortly after to give birth to pups and will be ready to mate again. So the beach masters defend their territory jealously and the battles could be bloody. One of the loser has a broken nose. Even the victors have lots of scares on their necks. However, the animals are peaceful most of the time. My favorite is the one that burped and said excuse me :-)

Breeding elephant seals at San Simeon

Huge elephant seals come to the central California coast every winter to give birth to their young. They nurse the pups for about 4 weeks and then are ready to breed again. The 4000 pound males lie on the beach seemingly asleep but keep a close eye on their harums. Often they fight each other for breeding rights. Their weight limits their mobility on land and gives them a clumsy appearance but they can be quite dangerous. The State has had to fence off many miles of the hiway near Hearst Castle to keep these behemoths off the pavement.

MERMAID MINUTE #7: CRAZY Seals of the Pacific Ocean! Elephant Seals make funny sounds!

Found in the Pacific, Elephant Seals are smart and social MAMMALS just like us that love hanging out on the beach! They form colonies on land where they mate, fight for territory and bathe in the sun! Male elephant seals are called BULLS, and female elephant seals are called COWS. Males can weight over 5000 pounds and make some really crazy noises to attract the females! On land, elephant seals get around by flopping on their bellies, yet they swim THOUSANDS of miles anywhere between Mexico to Alaska to find breeding grounds on the beaches. Elephant seals were almost lost because humans nearly hunted them all to extinction in the 1800's. Luckily they've made an amazing recovery and today there are over 150000 of them! Anyone can go visit the elephant seals on the coasts of California, Oregon and beyond. And that's an elephant seal in a MERMAID MINUTE! I'll sea you next time, my little sea fans!

Elephant Seals, at least the males, are massive. Molting their winter coat and sunning on the beach at San Simeon - California. You can see them up close and even more, you can smell them. A little strong, the odor is over powering. The skin must be sensitive to sun cause they keep throwing sand on themselves to prevent a sun burn. The big males when moving are actually are pretty fast and smooth considering their bulk and that they just pull themselves over the ground. music by 'Fly' by Kammerer

Elephant Seals: Warning, some graphic images. North of San Simeon, CA.

On view every winter; mating, jousting and death on the beach. The California Elephant Seals (Bull males, "cows" [females] and cubs) battle to reproduce and exist on the same patch of beach. Some males (and often females) are victims of attacks, and some cubs do not make it; they are killed by males or females, or simply run over and literally flattened by jousting males. In the brief time there, I witnessed several deaths, some of the dead and dying visible in the short unedited video. An amazing sight to be witnessed in person if at all possible.

Elephant Seals: Our Window to the Ocean

A ten minute documentary depicting the remarkable and uplifting story of the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris). Since time immemorial, vast numbers of elephant seals could be found breeding, molting, and rearing their young on the western seashores of North America. Unfortunately, American whalers hunted them to near-extinction in the late 19th century. The documentary describes how the recent resurgence of the elephant seal population at Point Reyes National Seashore and in the greater Pacific Ocean demonstrates the success of marine conservation laws and threatened species protections.
