Here's the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Conerto with Mischa Elman, (January 20, 1891 April 5, 1967) violin, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Barbirolli, December 1929. Even though I used a picture of a Naxos CD this recording came from an LP I've had for 20 years. The extraordinary thing about Elman is that he seems to have emerged fully formed as a violinist. Its difficult now to appreciate quite how revolutionary his playing must have sounded when, at the age of 12 and trained by Alexander Fidelman, he auditioned for Fidelmans own teacher, Leopold Auer. The great pedagogue had never heard anything like it, as he freely admitted, and Elman remains one of those rare cases of the development of an independent tonal aesthetic in isolation of other influences He had never heard either Ysaye or Kreisler. His period of ascendancy was real but brief. Chronology has tended to telescope his primacy in the concert halls of Europe and America but it was an unarguable one, lasting from his debut in Berlin in 1904 until the arrival of Heifetz in 1917. Throughout Elmans performance we can hear the battery of devices open to a player of his standing succulent portamenti, a ravishing tone, lava-like in its molten flow, which <b>...</b>

Mischa Elman (1891 - 1967) and Fritz Kreisler (1875 - 1962) were two well-known recording violinists in the early part of the 20. century whose popularity diminished as their older, more "romantic" style grew out of fashion. Although Elman's early discs display a much tighter technical grasp of the instrument, his LPs give a rare insight into what this style of performance sounds like when heard through the full spectrum of sound. Here Elman performs Kreisler's piece "Sicilienne and rigaudon in the style oof Francoer".

Mikhail Saulovich 'Mischa' Elman (Jan.20,1891 - April 5,1967) was a Ukrainian-born violinist, famed for his passionate style and beautiful tone. He was born in the small town of Talnoye near Kiev. His grandfather was a klezmer, a Jewish folk musician, who also played the violin. It became apparent when Mischa was very young that he had perfect pitch, but his father hesitated about a career as a musician, since musicians were not very high on the social scale. Later he was taken to Odessa, where he studied at the Imperial Academy of Music. Pablo de Sarasate gave him a recommendation, stating that he could become one of the great talents of Europe. He auditioned for Leopold Auer at the age of 11, playing the Wieniawski Concerto No. 2 and 24th Caprice by Paganini. Auer was so impressed that he had Elman admitted to the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1903, Elman began to play concerts in the homes of wealthy patrons of the arts, and he made his Berlin debut in 1904, creating a great sensation. His London debut in 1905 included the British premiere of Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor. He played in Carnegie Hall in 1908, making a great impression on his American audience. The Elman family moved to the United States. In 1917, he was elected to honorary membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity. Mischa Elman - Souvenir de Moscow (1910)
Another Violin Solo performance from acoustic era. Mischa Elman plays one of his favorite repertoires, Henri Wieniawski's Souvenir de Moscow, for Victor in 1910. I also have another recording of this piece done by Elman in 1929 (Recorded in Japan), but in that recording, his famous "Elman Tone" is simply faded away, so I chose this - although the sound quality is not so fine as the previous posting of Kreisler. Played on my Numark Turntable with Audio-Technica Catridge.
