Madison Square Garden 1974 November 28 (Thanksgiving). John Lennon came on stage as special guest at the Elton John concert and they did three songs together. We all know the story ...... When John Lennon was recording his "Walls and Bridges" album in 1974, he invited Elton to help him out on a couple of tracks - "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" and "Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)". This was around the same time they also worked together on Elton's releases "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "One Day at a Time". Lennon said of Elton, "I was amazed at his ability. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes". As Elton and Lennon were enjoying themselves greatly during the recording session, Elton asked Lennon if he would do "Whatever Gets You Thru" with him on stage. Lennon, who no longer performed live, jokingly promised to do so when the song became a #1 hit single. In November that year, it did hit #1, Lennon's only solo single to do so. Elton called him up and reminded him of the promise, and Lennon appeared on stage for three numbers at the final concert of Elton's 1974 American Tour, held at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Lennon was terrified, and nearly backed out several times. Finally, as Elton introduced him, he suddenly turned to Bernie Taupin back stage, and said, "I'm not going on unless you go with me". A #1 single in America 1974! The record is credited to "The Elton John Band featuring the Reggae guitars of Dr. Winston O'Boogie". It was of course John Winston Lennon as guest guitar player. It sounds to me like he's also singing on the chorus, what do you think? The B-side to the single was "One Day at a Time", a John Lennon song. Although he is not credited on the record, Elton revealed later that John Lennon sang vocal harmonies on that song, too! A great single in 1974! And one of the best Beatle covers EVER!

The song can be described as an uptempo ballad. If I never heard another song for the rest of my life I can honestly say this song does it for me. In my top 5 favorite of all Elton songs.

This is a piece that was made for the 50th anniversary of Madison Square Garden. It features John's unannounced appearance at Elton John's show on Thanksgiving day 1974. This perpetuates the myth a little bit and the guy from MTV is wrong about a lot of things, but overall it is an enjoyable clip.

Recorded at The Record Plant, New York from 17th June thru July 1974, except "Nobody Loves You" which was recorded in Los Angeles. Alternative versions of several of these tracks will later appear on "Menlove Avenue" in 1986. Also recorded during these sessions is : "Goodnight Vienna" a demo, written especially for, and given to Ringo. "Only You" - a demo, also given to Ringo. "Move Over Mrs. L." - a track originally written for Keith Moon. The splendidly original cover designed by Roy Kohara, is divided into three equal parts with two fold-out sections to create different covers ! ... You can see all the combinations above. The photographs are taken by Bob Gruen. The Inner sleeve has a similar style sepia-toned picture cover, also shown above. Plus, there is a terrific 8-page booklet (LP sized !) which not only includes the song lyrics and musician information, it also has some great pictures OF John, and five paintings BY John drawn in 1952 when he was only a boy. Also on the back of the booklet, is an examination of the origins of the Lennon name, which is taken from "IRISH FAMILIES, THEIR NAMES, ARMS AND ORIGINS" by Edward Maclysaght. The whole production is very light-hearted and John is clearly in a jovial and happy mood throughout. The record label is the standard green Apple.
