The two subsequently received thousands of dollars worth of free medical costs, housing and food--thanks to the US tax payer. Arellano then committed multiple felonies including identity theft, illegal immigration, and failure to appear in court. Crimes for which an American would serve year-long sentences. But as a special class, Arellano was able to avoid prosecution--while receiving free legal assistance. For the past year, Arellano has made a complete mockery of our government and laws by refusing to return to Mexico. Instead, Arellano has threatened to abandon her son in the US, as a ploy to avoid prosecution. A nation that cannot control its borders or enforce its laws, cannot survive as a nation. LOS ANGELES: Immigrant rights activists marched through downtown Los Angeles in support of Elvira Arellano, a recently deported immigrant from Mexico who spent nearly a year huddled inside a Chicago church to avoid being separated from her US-born son. Arellano, 32, was sent back to Mexico last weekend after traveling to Los Angeles to attend a rally for the overhaul of US immigration laws. Her son stayed in the United States. Police closed off streets as hundreds of demonstrators, including many families with young children, marched up Broadway on Saturday carrying large photos of Arellano and her 8-year-old son, Saul. Others raised placards reading "We are all Elvira!" At the end of the march, a stage was set up and dozens of speakers called for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Arellano became an activist and a national symbol for undocumented immigrant parents by defying her deportation order and speaking out from her sanctuary in Chicago's Adalberto United Methodist Church, where she had stayed with her son since Aug. 15, 2006. MEXICO CITY -- As President Barack Obama arrived in Mexico City Thursday, a small group of immigration activists demonstrated at the US Embassy on leafy Paseo de la Reforma, close to downtown. They were there to demand comprehensive immigration reform in the US and a stop to immigration raids and deportations. Children who are US citizens but now live in Mexico because of their parents' deportations were there. While President Obama said at his speech in the Democratic National Convention last year that no one "benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child," activists had hoped he would stop deportations with an executive order. That has not happened. One of the protesters present was Elvira Arellano, who became known nationwide when she fought a deportation order in 2006 by seeking sanctuary inside a Chicago church. Arellano was finally deported in 2007 and now runs a migrant shelter in Tijuana, working for immigration reform from the other side of the border.
