UN.GIFT was launched in March 2007 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with a grant made on behalf of the United Arab Emirates. ActionAid - www.actionaid.org TRANSCRIPT I think I expected to feel as though I was walking with people who were deeply downtrodden. I certainly didn't expect the vibrancy the life, the artistic explosion and a genuine sense of cautious optimism I did see poverty of course, deep wrenching poverty but I did not feel that there was a generation of people there too scared to move forward and inhabit the space that appears to be appearing. I felt that there was a genuine dialogue beginning to start between a very difficult government and the people Meeting Aung San SuuKyi was a remarkable experience. She's an extraordinary woman we talked a lot about films and books and about the political movement in her country, what's really happening. she's cautious but optimistic and very clear in her mind that it's the young people of her country that she needs to help to empower I found pretty much everyone I met there inspiring actually but there was one group of people in particular they're called the fellows. They are young rural people who have struggled for education and who have been helped by ActionAid and their partners to go and work in villages that they're either from or have links with and they stay there for between 1 and 2 years so they're really embedded into the community and their accomplishments are really breath-taking. The thing that is so impressive is that ActionAid seems to be empowering an entire generation, of course that's an impression but I am looking at a <b>...</b>
