Empowering the Language Learner: A Discussion with Diane Larsen-Freeman THE NEW SCHOOL FOR GENERAL STUDIES | www.newschool.edu Using a combination of lecture and experiential exercises, ESL education specialist Diane Larsen-Freeman traces the evolution of language teaching methods over the past 60 years, discussing how each evolutionary phase has contributed to a more "whole-person" view of language learners. Larsen-Freeman suggests that when educators treat language as a closed, static system, they create a critical barrier to student empowerment. When language is instead seen as the complex, dynamic system, teachers are able to help their students transform their linguistic world, not merely conform to it. Larsen-Freeman illustrates how this shift in understanding has implications for what and how teachers teach. Dr. Diane Larsen-Freeman is a professor of education and director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is also Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. She has spoken and published widely on the topics of teacher education, second language acquisition, English grammar, and language teaching methodology. Women and youth entrepreneurs in rural India are accessing credit and financial literacy training through an initiative by India's Corporation Bank, in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat - www.thecommonwealth.org - and the NTR Foundation. At present, 40 per cent of India's 1.2 billion population do not have a bank account. They face challenges such as exploitation from moneylenders, travelling considerable distances to get to banks and difficulty arranging finance due to lack of knowledge about approaching the banks and preparing the necessary documents. Through this project, which is focused on the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), the NTR Foundation identifies promising entrepreneurs in rural communities, recommends them to the bank to receive loans and provides ongoing support for the women. India's Corporation Bank finances the project and underwrites the loans, while the Commonwealth Secretariat is the advisory partner offering finance and credit training for the entrepreneurs, strategic guidance and expertise to the bank in the area of microfinance. This programme is providing a replicable model for the economic and social inclusion of women and youth in enterprise development that can be rolled out across other parts of India and the rest of the Commonwealth. In 1995, just 16% of the population were connected to the power grid. Today that figure stands at an impressive 70%. The Lao PDR electrification program's approach has been an all encompassing one--from building capacities at the government level (including the electricity authority) to developing a bottom up rural electrification planning (on grid and off grid), a gender sensitive eligibility criteria, and project procurement, management and implementation aspects. Whether or not you would like to partake in the 21 Day Challenge I talk about in this video, I still encourage you to try the "cancel, clear or delete the negative thought and REPLACE with a positive thought" exercise the next time you find yourself getting caught up in a self-defeating thought pattern, worrying/ obsessing about something, etc. I still encourage people to express their emotions and humanness! Absolutely! It's ok to feel sad, mad, frustrated- These emotions are always telling you something. It's up to you to figure out what they're trying to tell you. Sometimes they could be telling you that you're not on the right track, or perhaps something really sad did happen, so of course the natural response is to be sad... But sometimes, we're sad because of thoughts we're believing about ourselves that don't align with who we "really" are which is AMAZING! A lot of suffering occurs because of our limiting thoughts/ beliefs about ourselves and the world. If you've gotten into the habit of thinking really critical, limiting thoughts about yourself, you're most likely not *feeling* very good. If this is the case, sometimes just thinking a thought that is slightly more positive than your current thoughts will allow you to *feel* better. The better you feel, the easier it will become to manifest your desires. (Youtube "Abraham Hicks" if you haven't already.) So you may want to try this simple exercise as much as you can for a 21 day period in attempt to break the habit <b>...</b>
