Our upcoming new release in July is CHEN VILLAGE, a story that revolves around life in Chen Village, China and Chen Family Tai Chi. There are 3000 residents in Chen Village (Chenjiagou) and 2500 practice Tai Chi Chuan on a daily basis. Almost ninety percent of the residents bear the Chen surname. This is the World Traditional Wushu Championships 2010, which took place in China at Wudang Mountain (in Shiyan City) in October. We put together this overview of the martial arts championships. Quite a large number of countries competed including a small USA team. Empty Mind Films was there filming part of an upcoming film release about one of the competitors from Shaolin. The event was not actually open to the public which is odd, so I am not sure how tickets were dispersed. We did see a number of friends from Wudang Mountain which was nice. A trailer for a new documentary release, The Last Clan. This is a story about the Chinese Hakka community - who cling desperately to their close-knit clan living, where families live together in large rammed-earth homes called Tulou. The families share a common name and ancestor, and some homes can number 300 family members of 3 or 4 generations. But how does the clan survive when all the young members start to leave and head for the city? Many have already left and return back to the Tulou only at festival time. Some have even left their wives or husbands behind. To survive, the last remaining residents turn to tourism to attract money and so bring their sons and daughters back home. This is a short selection of clips we put together that were shot mostly around Tokyo during downtime from making our Japanese Sword film in October and November 2009. Ninety percent were shot using the Canon EOS 7D hand held - we were actually testing the 7D for the first time with these shots around Tokyo! The fast motion clips were shot using our EX-3. This is Japanese archery on horseback known as Yabusame (流鏑馬). This was filmed in November 2009 at the Meiji Shrine, Japan. Yabusame was created as archery practice for the Samurai, to sharpen their skills during peace time. It is said by some historians that the warriors would also use dogs as target practice, called inuoumono and like Yabusame, the arrows were padded so few dogs were actually hurt.
