Conversations with History: Energy Security and the Remaking of the Modern World with Daniel Yergin

Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Daniel Yergin for a discussion of his new book, "The Quest." Tracing his intellectual odyssey, Yergin reflects on the challenges of writing a comprehensive account of energy, and he highlights the importance of storytelling in crafting a powerful narrative. He then analyzes the role of creativity, technology, markets, and geopolitics in shaping the unfolding story of energy. The conversation moves on to three important questions: whether there will be enough energy to meet the world's demands, whether the security of the energy system will be insured, and what will be the future mix of energy sources. NATO's role in Energy Security

In its new Strategic Concept NATO members agreed to develop the capacity to contribute to energy security. But what exactly should NATO's role be? It's a difficult question for the 28 member alliance to agree on, as national interests diverge. NATO's new Energy Security Section is creating a pool of expertise to help allies develop a coherent policy.

Australia's Energy Security - 24/7 Concentrated Solar Thermal Power plus Molten Salt Storage (CSP+)

PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO. Very few Australians are aware of molten salt storage technology and how it allows us to switch to 100% renewable energy in a very short space of time. Russell Beard of Earthrise goes on a tour of Gemasolar, near Seville, Spain - the first Concentrated Solar Thermal Power with molten salt storage (CSP+) plant to produce energy 24 hours per day. This power tower plant produces 20MW, enough to power 25000 homes but much bigger CSP+ plants are now being in the Middle East and the US that will produce 100MW and 150MW. Even larger CSP+ plants are possible. Research by Beyond Zero Emissions (www.beyondzeroemissions.org) and the Energy Research Institute, Melbourne University shows that a combination of * energy efficiency and an upgraded grid plus a mix of: * 60% CSP+ (comprising 12 solar regions each containing 19 220MW plants located in the high-insolation vicinities of Carnarvon, Kalgoorlie (WA), Port Augusta (SA), Mildura (VIC), Bourke, Dubbo, Moree, Silverton (NSW), Roma, Longreach, Charleville, Prairie (QLD)) and * 40% wind (comprising 23 wind regions in Albany, Bunbury, Esperance, Geraldton (WA), Cape Jaffa, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Streaky Bay, Yongala (SA), Cooma, Crookwell, Orange, Silverton, Walcha (NSW), Ballarat, Mt Gellibrand, Port Fairy, Wonthaggi (VIC), Atherton, Collinsville, Georgetown, Stanthorpe (QLD)) and * a small hydro/biomass backup for a few days in winter can provide all of Australia's energy needs including those of ...

Iran: Naval drills for global energy security

It's all about energy security for the Persian Gulf states and not just Iran. That's why Iranian lawmakers say that Iran should stage regular naval drills in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman to facilitate the flow of oil, because almost 90% of the oil exports transit the Strait of Hormuz - almost 18% of global oil demand. Energy Security: India's Sustainable Solutions (Preview)

DUR: 40 mins. YEAR: 2009. KS 3-5 India faces a major energy crisis because of its rapid growth, but traditional energy sources won't be enough to meet all future needs. This programme looks at sustainable alternatives. We visit Asias largest wind farm and look at whos benefiting from this electricity generation. We then visit a bio gas plant and ask whether this renewable energy source is a solution better suited to meeting the needs of Indias rural population. We look at the problems the bio gas plant is seeking to address and find out how it has benefited the community, in particular the women. Solar Energy Solar Kits

WINDENERGY7.com - - Solar Energy and Solar Kits are available at our site. Solar Energy is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV), or Solar Energy. Photovoltaics were initially used to power small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to off-grid homes powered by a photovoltaic Solar Energy array. A significant problem with Solar Energy is installation cost. Small Solar Energy applications are now replacing other sources in the developing world. Solar Energy for Sale and Solar Panel Cost for Solar Installation are available from WindEnergy7 LLC. We are an Ohio based company shipping Solar Energy worldwide. We sell complete engineered systems to ensure customers success in their installation and operation. Our systems provide energy security, emergency power, and we can run anything, any size, anywhere, with or without the grid power. Our customers can run their meters backward selling excess power to the utility. Solar Energy are used extensively in the country where there is no grid energy available. These systems are called Off-Grid solar panel systems. This requires the use of batteries to store the energy for use at night or on long stretches of overcast weather. The energy stored in the batteries leaves the batteries as DC electricity then converted to alternating current (AC) for use with conventional appliances. Much like running your own ...

Deriner Dam(Artvin, Turkey) - Build it Bigger

Build it Bigger Season 5 Episode 8 - Deriner Dam...Turkeys Mammoth Hydropower Danny Forster'ın Deriner barajı için çektiği belgesel...Turkey's Mammoth Hydropowered Deriner Dam Season 5 Episode 8 Turkey is making a clever move by harnessing the energy of the country′s powerful mountain waterfalls—a move that involves building a dizzyingly tall dam wedged between those very mountains. Why, you might ask, am I suspended above a giant waterfall between two mountaintops? My position on this shoot is a result of my adventurous spirit, my deep curiosity, and . . . Turkey′s place in the world. Turkey is in some ways the ultimate modern, global nation: straddling Europe and Asia, with strong cultural ties to the Middle East, and an economy growing like crazy over the last decade or so. Turkey now has the 15th largest gross domestic product in the world. With growth comes consumption (as every parent of a teenager knows). Turkey has tripled its energy consumption in the last thirty years. And the more it needs, the more it imports—70% of its power comes from imported fossil fuels. But the Turkish government decided for the sake of its financial and energy security that it wanted to be more self-reliant. And what was the most likely source of indigenous power? Hydroelectric. Turkey, you see, is full of running water and it′s full of mountains. Mountains + running water = waterfalls. Waterfalls = potential energy. The idea was to harness this energy through a series of dams, and ...

Statkraft - Osmotic Power Plant - Free energy - How it works

Osmotic power is clean, renewable energy, with a global potential of 1600 to 1700 TWh - equal to China's total electricity consumption in 2002. To find out more go to: www.statkraft.com When freshwater meets saltwater, for example where a river flows out into the sea, enormous quantities of energy are released. This energy can be utilised to generate power through the natural phenomenon of osmosis. Osmosis is the transport of water from an area with low concentration of dissolved substances (eg salt) through a membrane to an area with a higher concentration. The membrane is semi-permeable. It allows some substances to pass through, but stops other substances. Nature will seek to equalise the difference in concentration between the two sides of the membrane. It is this mechanism which enables plants to absorb moisture through there leaves and retain it. As water is drawn through the membrane one way only, a pressure is generated on the "inside", which in an osmotic power plant can be utilised to generate electricity.
