Variable CAM Timing


Variable CAM timing is a concept that entails changing the camshaft timing, as needed, depending on engine LOAD demands. This technology was impossible just a few years ago, due to the state of the art electronics needed. The latest Variable CAM Timing (VCT) systems are infinitely variable, meaning they have no specified settings. CAM timing can be changed or varied instantaneously across the whole range (ie. Plus or Minus 30 degrees from normal). By varying the CAM timing, the ECM can regulate the power curve to meet its own needs. On any gasoline engine, each RPM setting has an optimum CAM timing setting, depending on load. Up until a few years ago engines were set whatever the CAM lobes were machined at. With modern VCT, this relationship can be varied, also varying the engine's power curve. Most modern VCT systems do not control valve lift, but do great by simply changing open and close timing points during engine operation. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (TOYOTA)


VVT-i, or Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, is an automobile variable valve timing technology developed by Toyota, similar in performance to the BMW's VANOS. The Toyota VVT-i system replaces the Toyota VVT offered starting in 1991 on the 5-valve per cylinder 4A-GE engine. The VVT system is a 2-stage hydraulically controlled cam phasing system. VVT-i, introduced in 1996, varies the timing of the intake valves by adjusting the relationship between the camshaft drive (belt, scissor-gear or chain) and intake camshaft. Engine oil pressure is applied to an actuator to adjust the camshaft position.

1998 Supra Variable Valve Timing System Variable valve timing or VVT-i has been incorporated on the 2JZ-GE to improve throttle response and low end power, while increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. As the engine reaches higher RPMs the VVT-i system reduces the amount of vavle overlap, to ensure smooth efficient power delivery throughout the entire powerband. It uses a moveable piston located within the intake camshaft sprocket, and a duty cycled oil control valve to provide a 60 degree range of intake cam timing adjustment.

TWO CYLINDER SLIDE VALVE STEAM ENGINE CRANKSHAFT: VIDEO #2


This video completes the machining of the crankshaft disks, including the mounting of the billet in the 4 Jaw lathe chuck to offset the billet so that the center of the valve timing eccentrics now run concentrically in the lathe. It finishes with the parting off of the first complete crank disk, one of the two which carry the eccentrics machined as an intrinsic part of the crank disk itself. The next video will continue the final assembly of the crankshaft proper, thw pressiing of the crankshaft and crank pin parts, as well as the bearing bronze bearing bushes. This stage is critical, so wish me luck! Unless all goes well, and I can make an assembked crankshaft that runs with all three crankshaft portions truly concentrically, there won't be another video!

I decided to rebuild My Hilux engine as the one in it is losing oil pressure. Since I was going to do it myself I thought I might as well try and get more performance out of it in the process. As all I got from machine shops was dumb looks when they found I was building something other than a V8 I thought I might as well share what I've learnt. This engine is hand made in Europe. Only 100 of them will be made. G63V12 Bore 4.0mm, Stroke 5.0mm, Stroke Volume 12 x 62.80 mm3, Weight 108g This engine is absolutely beautiful to look at and watch run. Size: 2 1/5 inches wide X 5 1/2 inches long X 4 1/2 inches high Assembled Ready-To-Run. Made in Europe Carbon dioxide motors have been around for a long time. They are expansion engines which work rather like a steam engine. The tank receives a charge of CO2 which is liquid at ambient temperature at a vapor pressure of about 850 psi. this boils in the tank to supply gas to the motor. In the Gasparin the inlet valve is a steel ball sealing under gas pressure in a nylon (delrin type) seat while the piston carries a central peg which lifts the valve as it approaches top dead center. Exhaust is through a ring of ports uncovered by the piston towards the bottom of the stroke. Gasparins spun alloy tanks, silver-soldered pipe work, connectors and the filler valves are all beautifully designed. The motors use a floating O ring to seal the piston, which works well. They also have a flexible joint between the gas supply pipe and the cylinder head. www.greenpowerscience.com This is a larger Steam Engine I have. It was tested at 80 PSI and has a lot of torque. The Permanent Magnet motor is a 1HP Leeson motor that produces very high voltage. It is a good option for lower RPM turbines requiring higher charging voltage. The Timing Chain and gear were placed to test the maximum DC voltage. This is a lower torque setup. For heavier load testing I will be reversing the arrangement. The Geared motor requires 90V DC to run at 4900 RPM to the 120 to 1 ratio of 40 RPM. This Tested at 60 RPM so the power was about 100 watts of the single motor and 185 for the double setup.

The capable GX 460 transitions into the 2012 model year with minimal changes. The standard model receives color-keyed bodyside molding with a chrome accent, while the Premium model now features a high-gloss wheel finish. In addition, the Fire Agate Pearl exterior replaces Peridot Mica. The GX 460 takes its model designation from its 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces 301 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 329 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3500 rpm. The 32-valve DOHC engine features aluminum alloy cylinder heads and block with dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i), which controls valve timing and overlap on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, fuel efficiency and emissions. The GX 460's fuel economy is better than other V8 luxury utility vehicles and competitive with some six-cylinder models with its EPA-estimated 17 mpg combined, 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway ratings. The 4.6-liter V8 is teamed to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sequential shift. The responsive powertrain is quiet and helps the GX 460 tow up to 6500 lbs.

For those who don't know, GMs Ecotec 2.4L I-4 has been awarded Wards Auto World magazines 2010 10 Best Engines for North America.
