Meet the Entomologists at the Cockrell Butterfly Center

There is never a shortage of cool jobs at HMNS - fossil hunter, bug chef, snow wrangler just to name a few - but Erin and Laurie, entomologists and cheif caretakers for all our live insects - are probably in pretty stiff competition for the all-time coolest job award. On top of raising exotic insects like giant katydids and Madagascar hissing cockroaches and caring for butterflies from chrysalid to conservatory, they also get to experience the awesome combination of kids + creepy crawlies with their Bugs on Wheels program. In the video below, they'll take you behind the scenes of the Cockrell Butterfly Center and through their typical day - from feeding the insects to getting the butterflies ready to flutter - plus show you some amazing insects up close. Both Erin and Laurie write for the HMNS blog, BEYONDbones: blog.hmns.org More info www.hmns.org

This was for our chem project... not the best quality, but what can I say? We filmed for three hours, and the video camera my friend had wasn't compatible with my laptop. So we ended up hooking hers up to her widescreen tv and recording the tv with my little Point and Shoot video camera (we then finished later). So forgive the poor quality.

Justin & Duen visit Bishop Museum's Entomology Department Stalk Eyed Fly Scorpions Walking Sticks

Justin and Duen visited Bishop Museum's Entomology Department on 27 March 2009. They have 13.5 million bugs!! Amazing! I was especially pleased to discover that they had a nice collection of stalk-eyed flies, which I believe have better stereoscopic vision. I therefore presume they are predators. Justin really liked the scorpions. Bishop Museum is located in Honolulu, HI www.bishopmuseum.org This was a special behind the scenes tour by Shar, a staff member of the museum. I won this tour at my orchestra's Christmas Party's silent auction. Shar and I (Duen) both play violin.

The Entomologist Part 1

A dark, Kafkaesque tale, The Entomologist tells the tale of an exhausted man trying to get some sleep in a hotel room, whilst being plagued by insects...but do they inhabit the real world or the imagined... The film was based on a poem written by my brother Darren Etienne, which was then later developed by myself and Mark Swain, who subsequently designed the exquisite sets. After an attempt to make the film on limited money back in 1995, we began proper in the summer of 1997 after recieving money from what was formally known as 'East Midlands Arts' ~ now 'EM Media'. What followed was two years of intensive set and model making, and a lot of struggle. After further funding from South East Art, Meridian Television and The Lighthouse in Brighton, filming started in 1999, and in 2000 we finished the film and had it premiered on Meridian Television and at The Duke of York Cinema. The film later went on to be selected for nomination for the BAFTA short film awards and the Can Short Film Festival in Nottingham, and we were invited to the Abbeville Film Festival in France to show the film and give a talk on the making of it.

Wollheim, Matthew Robbins, Guillermo del Toro Film Description: While one would imagine that the average New Yorker would be used to dealing with bugs after years of apartment dwelling, a scientific experiment gone wrong results in an insect that even Raid can't handle in this sci-fi/horror thriller. In Manhattan, cockroaches are spreading a deadly disease that is claiming hundreds of the city's children, so entomologist Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) uses genetic engineering techniques to create what she and her colleague (and husband) Peter Mann (Jeremy Northam) call the Judas Breed, a large insect that will feed on the disease carrying roaches. Since the Judas bugs have been designed so that they can't breed, the mutated species should die out in a matter of a few years. However, Susan, Peter ...

Colorado State University Entomology Instructor Creates Buzz with Bee Beard

When Colorado State University entomology instructor Mathew Camper wanted to illustrate a point for students, he called for help. From 10000 bees. Camper had thousands of the stinging insects buzzing around, crawling on and clinging to his torso, head, neck and face while he offered his mug as the milieu for a bee beard. "Honey bees are really gentle, the gentle teddy bears of the insect world," Camper, a faculty member in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management, said. "The bee beard is a great teaching aid to make this point." In fact, Camper said, many people confuse honey bees and yellowjacket wasps, mistakenly blaming a bee for a painful sting when a wasp is the real culprit.
