International Schools in Erbil

For families with children, priority one upon accepting an international assignment is to insure the availability of adequate schooling. Most parents bringing a child along on an international assignment prefer to find a school that matches the curriculum the child is familiar with from their home country, especially if they plan to return home after the assignment. The limited options for international schooling in Erbil can sometimes make this extremely difficult. As Erbil grows and is built up, these options will expand and there will be more opportunities at a variety of different schools. At the moment however, there are only three schools to choose from. Pets in Erbil

Having a pet in Iraq is a little different than it might be from where you're coming from. A common sight in any Western city or neighborhood are a number of dogs and their owners walking up and down the street. In Erbil (and most of the Middle East), you will rarely see something like this. If you do choose to take your dog or pet to Erbil, you might get wary or menacing looks from your neighbors. It is not considered normal to have a dog, and local residents might be afraid of your animal, however sweet he or she is. In the past couple years, expats living in Erbil have noted that this attitude is slowly changing, and local residents are starting to get used to you walking your dog. As time goes on, these feelings will grow and you'll no longer get those strange looks while walking your pooch. Safety in Erbil

Erbil is generally safe, with a large police presence on the streets and at all the intersections. We do suggest that expatriates take certain precautions when traveling on foot. It is advised that people walk in pairs or in small groups. Having someone who speaks the language in the group would be advisable as well. These suggestions apply even more so to women and children. Shopping in Erbil

The shopping development within Erbil has increased significantly over the last few years. There are many malls in the city, but they are not what one might find in Europe or the US The malls are more like a hyper-market (for example Tesco) divided into a series of smaller, specialized shops. The facilities are clean and acceptable. Designer brands are becoming more readily available with stores like Levis, adidas, Nike and Mont Blank opening. Currently there are two main shopping malls found in the city. The Majidi Mall and the Family Mall, which also has the recently opened Carrefour inside it, both offer a variety of places in which to shop. Grocery stores have a decent selection of name brand products along with local items. There are numerous shops throughout town as well, but shopping in town requires multiple stops as opposed to the one-stop shopping available in the malls. Language in Erbil

In Kurdistan the official language is Kurdish. Arabic is also widely spoken but English is very sparse. Expatriates can have a difficult time being understood and it would be advised that some basic Kurdish is learned before arrival or soon after. Whilst in shopping malls and modern modern amenities there are greater possibilities of basic English being understood. It is important to note that there are two dialects of Kurdish, so if you do decide to learn the language, make sure to learn the correct one! The first is the Sorani dialect, spoken to the South of the Iraqi Kurdish areas and in Western Iran by approximately 5 million people. It is written in a Kurdish variant of the Perso-Arabic script but also in a Latin-based system. The Sorani dialect is the dialect most often spoken in Erbil. The second is the Kurmanji dialect, spoken in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia and the Lebanon. It has an estimated 8 -- 10 million speakers and has been written in the Latin script since the 1930s. Housing in Erbil

The housing options range from stand alone villas to gated high rise flat communities to standard row villa living. Costs for an acceptable 100m2 flat in the city proper start at around 600 USD a month and you can even find a low end villa for about 1200 USD per month. There are also properties for sale and many under construction which will soon be on the market. Expat gated/secured housing in high rise/stand-alone villas ranging from 2000 -- 3000 USD per month. Overall, deposits vary from 1 month to 1 year, but are negotiable in most cases. Also, these housing communities are full of offices as companies consolidate costs by living and working in the same space. Leasing is done through lawyers or real estate brokers. The lawyer/broker for each party will draft an original contract out of the two side's desires. Once the contract is agreeable to both, it is taken to the appropriate Ministries to be stamped. Once the agreement is signed and stamped, it cannot be changed by either party. There is a good chance that in the coming year or two there will be a housing glut. There are so many living accommodations being built that barring an enormous international immigration trend, the supply will far outweigh the demand for rentals. Temp living is limited to hotels; there are no adequate specialty temporary living accommodations that have been built to date. My trip to Erbil, North Iraq - Nov/Dec 2011

I went to Iraq as part of the Cardiff University delegation to promote peer-assisted learning at Hawler Medical University. This project is supported by the British Council - DelPHE programme. This trip was also an opportunity for me to promote my society the Student Iraqi Medical Association Wales on an international level and raise awareness about the purpose of this innovative medical school society. What a great experience.....
