My first posting with a new camera and professional studio mike. Rose Ponselle singing Ernani Involami from Verdi's opera Ernani for Victor in 1927. An astonishing performance and great sound. And yet, I've played her records for relatives of mine who saw her many times in New York in the 20's and they said that the records pale in comparison to her live performances! I believe that she is the greatest singer this country ever produced.

His music elaborates more finely than Villa Lobos, his pupil, the ethnic elements of Brazil, when they are used. Bidu Sayao often interpreted Bragas songs making them known throughout the world. It was she, who gave the score to Teresa Berganza who continued the tradition. The Casinha is a simple piece of music, perhaps the most popular by Braga and I illustrated it with photos I have taken in Brazil and Greece. Legendary Polish bass EDOUARD de RESZKE sings "Infelice" from Verdi's ERNANI, recorded by the Columbia Record Co. in 1903. Charles Adams Prince is piano accompanist. "Infelice" is one of three arias recorded by de Reszke for Columbia at its New York City studio in 1903-—his ONLY three discs. This truly IS a rare recording. While he was no longer in prime voice, this disc is the best of what survives of a truly celebrated career. I posted this video in the belief that a sample of Edouard de Reszke's voice should be part of the YouTube treasury of legendary singers. Edouard de Reszke, born as Edward, (22 December 1853 - 25 May 1917), was a Polish operatic bass born in Warsaw. He learned singing first in Warsaw, then in Italy. Initially, he did not want to become an operatic singer, but persuaded by his sister, Józefina, he accepted an engagement with the Paris Opera. He was chosen by the composer Giuseppe Verdi to make his debut in the first Paris performance of Aida on 22 April 1876, appearing under Verdi's baton as the king of Egypt. De Reszke's older brother was the celebrated tenor Jean de Reszke (1850-1925), with whom he sang often in Paris, London, and New York. In 1887, they performed together in the 500th performance of Gounod's Faust at the Paris Opera. Piero Cappuccilli (baritone) demonstrates the difference between the scientific musical pitch of A=432 Hz (the so-called "Verdi tuning") and the higher, unnatural pitch of A=440. In this clip, he sings excerpts from Carlo's aria "Oh, de'verd'anni miei" from the opera "Ernani" by Giuseppe Verdi. If one uses the high tuning (which is more or less standard today), the baritone is forced to incorrectly pass the register before the E-natural, as a result of the effort on his vocal cords. This destroys the original color intended by Verdi, and is also harmful to the human singing voice in the long run (especially for less developed voices). Cappuccilli first sings with the piano tuned to A=432, and not passing register, as Verdi wanted, and then with the piano tuned to A=440, indicating to the audience with his hand when the early passage occurred on E-flat.
