Video of Iceland volcano eruption, giant ash clouds from Grimsvotn

Iceland's imposed a flight ban and closed its main airport after the country's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, erupted. It lies under the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland and has been dormant for 7 years. A large plume of smoke and ash is stretching 20 km into the air. Iceland's Meteorological Office says that the eruption at the Grimsvotn volcano has been accompanied by a series of small earthquakes. Scientists have been expecting a new eruption and have said previously that this volcano's eruption will likely be small and should not lead to the air travel chaos caused in April 2010 by ash from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano. Januar 2011, von Markus Belde Mount Etna, the 3329-metre 10922-feet volcano in Sicily erupted in the evening of January 12, 2011 for around four hours, providing an amazing scenery. On the evening of 11th January 2011 an increase in volcanic tremor was recorded at the summit of the volcano. The recorded seismic activity reached a peak at 7 am on 12th January when the source moved from north of NE crater to the SE crater. The eruption started with strombolian explosive activity at SE crater at around 9.pm Lava overflowed the eastern rim of SE crater and fed a flow that moved toward the western wall of the Valle del Bove (Valley of the oxen), an ancient huge uninhabited depression on the NE side of the volcano. The Sicilian communities near the volcano were not threatened by this latest fascinating eruption. Known as 'Jebel Utlamat' in Arabic - meaning 'mountain of fire - Etna's name is thought to originate from the Phoenician word 'attuna', meaning 'furnace'. Etna is Europe's most active volcano and has been active for around half a million years. Eruptions have rarely threatened the inhabited areas in the volcano's vicinity. Most eruptions take place on the summit area around its 4 crates with spectacular lava streams flowing usually inside the large uninhabited depression of the "Valle del Bove", having an ...

Underwater Volcano Erupts in Tonga, and Makes World News

March 16th, 2009 Officials in Tonga are heading to the site of an underwater eruption to determine what impact it will have on the Pacific nation's environment. The underwater volcano erupted three days ago off the coast of the country's capital. This morning a survey team is expected to arrive on site, where the eruption is happening. It is located a day's travel by boat from Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa, but the clouds of smoke, steam and ash it is sending up to 100 metres into the air, means it is clearly visible from the capital. Kelepi Mafi from the Ministry of Lands in Tonga says the area is still unsafe. "It's not advisable for any of the fishermen to go around in that area," he said. The underwater eruption began on Monday after a major earth tremor. It is still not known if it will result in a new land mass in Tonga's territory.

Filament Eruption

A very long solar filament that had been snaking around the Sun erupted today (Dec. 6, 2010) with a flourish. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) caught the action in dramatic detail in extreme ultraviolet light of Helium. It had been almost a million km long ((about half a solar radius) and a prominent feature on the Sun visible over two weeks ago before it rotated out of view. Filaments are elongated clouds of cooler gases suspended above the Sun by magnetic forces. They are rather unstable and often break away from the Sun. Note: the edge of the moon can be glimpsed at 0300 UT during a brief lunar transit.

Hawaii volcano eruption: Stunning aerial video of Kilauea lava rivers

Follow us on twitter.com and www.facebook.com Scientists say a new lava flow has broken out at Kilauea, a volcano in Hawaii that has been continuously erupting for nearly three decades. The lava flow is entirely within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and currently poses no hazard to residents. The location was less than half a mile (from the Kamoamoa fissure that erupted in March. Volcanologist Janet Babb said it was the first time lava has broken out at the volcano since March, aside from some that spilled out at the Puu Oo crater last week. The lava is moving down Kilauea's south flank. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes. It has been constantly erupting since 2 January 1983.

Massive Solar Eruption To Hit Earth-January 24-25, 2012

Jan. 23rd around 0359 UT, big sunspot 1402 erupted, producing a long-duration M9-class solar flare. The explosion's M9-ranking puts it on the threshold of being an X-flare, the most powerful kind. The Solar and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) and the STEREO-Behind spacecraft have both detected a CME rapidly emerging from the blast site. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab estimate a velocity of 2200 km. There is little doubt that the cloud is heading in the general direction of Earth. A preliminary inspection of SOHO/STEREO imagery suggests that the CME will deliver a strong glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 24-25 as it sails mostly north of our planet. Chaos Erupts As Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll 2011

Daily News @ RevolutionNews.US — And the winner of the CPAC presidential straw poll is ... Ron Paul. That marks the libertarian Texas congressman's second win in a row. Just as he did last year, Mitt Romney came in second, with 23 percent to Paul's 30 percent. This mirrors 2010's poll almost exactly, when Paul got 31 percent and Romney 22 percent. When the results were officially announced, CPAC's main hall erupted in cheers and boos, with Paul supporters trying to out-shout the disappointed majority. Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, whose libertarian message largely overlaps with Paul's, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie tied for third with 6 percent each. Newt Gingrich got 5 percent. Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty got just 4 percent. Also with 4 percent were Michele Bachmann and Mitch Daniels, Indiana's governor. Sarah Palin, who did not attend CPAC, got 3 percent, while former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain greceived 2 percent, as did Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum. 3742 people participated in the poll, a minority of the 10000+ attendees. (See what the straw poll ballot looks like here.) Paul's support can at least partly be ascribed to friendly groups buying CPAC tickets en masse for Paul fans, who also made their presence known this year by heckling Dick Cheney. Solar Eruption - December 4, 2009 - Approx. 10 hour sun storm seen by STEREO A & B

"Both STEREO spacecraft observed in extreme UV light as an elongated filament erupted from the Sun (Dec. 4, 2009) over a period of about 10 hours. The spacecraft are about 120 degrees apart and slowly separating roughly along Earth's orbital path. One video clip shows both views at the same time; the other shows the filament lift off in profile, where it is more easily seen against the dark sky as its backdrop. Filaments are clouds of cooler gas suspended above the Sun by magnetic forces. They frequently lose their stability and erupt as this one did. (A prominence is the same solar feature as a filament except it is observed in profile instead of against the Sun's surface.) Note that the high-latitude event heads toward the solar equator because of the relatively flattened global solar magnetic field at this stage of the solar cycle." Nyiragongo Volcano and the Volcanic Observatory of Goma, Congo

On January 17th, 2002, Nyiragongo volcano erupted. Lava flows ran across the town of Goma (600000 inhabitants), and ended up in Lake Kivu. At that time, the town of Goma was in the hands of Congolese rebels, supported by the Rwandan regular army, so the central government of DRC did not take any security measures for survivors and homeless people. The population had the time to run away from the town, so only some hundred people died, but thousands of houses were destroyed and the rest was pillaged by the Rwandan army. Three years after the eruption, the inhabitants of Goma are reconstructing their houses on the solidified lava flows, on the exact spots their homes had been destroyed. If a new eruption took place, those new houses would be swept away and burnt again. The international community finances a Volcanic Observatory in Goma, where some Congolese scientists, under the supervision of famous Belgian volcanologist Jacques Durieux, try to forecast the next eruption and, with the help of the local authorities, hope to be able to evacuate the town as quickly as possible to reduce the number of victims.
