Intense Strombolian activity on the floor of the Bocca Nuova, the largest of the summit craters of Etna, started on the late evening of 11 July 2011. Two days later, a team of volcanologists of the INGV-Catania, including myself, enjoyed a wonderful show, the first significant activity in the Bocca Nuova since more than 10 years. The audio unfortunately suffers from the strong wind blowing during our visit, which also sandblasted our faces and caused intense pain in our eyes, and sometimes made small rock fragments land on our protective helmets. Some of the original eruption sound can be heard, especially in the first 10 seconds of the video. At about 00:45, I raised the camera to show the Northeast Crater to the north, and then panned to the horizon, still tinged with the afterglow from the sunset not long before, and my colleague Mauro is seen, as he asks "Boris stai facendo video?" Night time video of Mt Etna erupting on the 30th July 2011. Some of the lava was supposedly going 1km into the air! This was one of the biggest eruptions at Etna, Sicily in years. We were lucky enough to be watching from a few miles away on the outskirts of Acireale.

Dopo 10 anni in cui si erano verificate soltanto delle sporadiche emissioni di cenere litica, la Bocca Nuova rientra in attività con moderate esplosioni stromboliane concentrate sul fondo sudorientale della depressione craterica (molto simile a quella che ha caratterizzato lo stesso cratere nella seconda metà degli anni '90). Le esplosioni sono continue (20-25 al minuto) con lanci di brandelli di lava che, in alcuni casi, superano in altezza l'orlo meridionale del cratere sommitale anche per 70-80 mt. Gran parte del materiale emesso ricade all'interno della depressione craterica, superando in certi casi ciò che resta del "diaframma" e ricadendo all'interno della Voragine. L'attività stromboliana ricominciata (dopo una pausa di 20 ore circa) nella mattinata del 9 luglio all'interno della bocca posta sul fianco orientale del Cratere di Sud Est, nelle prime ore del pomeriggio è cresciuta ulteriormente d'intensità. Alle 14:00 (UTC +2) circa è iniziato un trabocco lavico dall'orlo orientale del cratere, che ha prodotto una colata che, sovrapponendosi a quelle dei precedenti eventi parossistici, è scesa lungo la parete occidentale della Valle del Bove. Alle 15_40 (UTC +2) è avvenuta una imponente emissione di cenere rossastra dalla Bocca Nuova. A partire dalle 15_50 (UTC +2) si è assistito al progressivo aumento dei fenomeni e all'inizio delle prime attività di fontanamento. Intorno alle 16_30 (UTC +2) le fontane di lava sono cresciute fino a superare di qualche centinaio di metri in altezza la cima del vecchio cono del Cratere di Sud Est, producendo una colonna sostenuta di materiale piroclastico alta diversi Km. Si è assistito alla ricaduta di scorie laviche pluricentimetriche fino alla stazione di arrivo della Funivia dell'Etna a quota 2500 mt circa. La sera del 30 Luglio è avvenuto l'8° episodio di fontane di lava dell'anno dalla bocca posta sul fianco orientale del cono del cratere di SudEst. L'attività è cominciata nella mattinata di ieri intorno alle ore 8:00 (UTC +2), con esplosioni stromboliane continue che, crescendo gradualmente d'intensità, intorno alle ore 10:00 (UTC +2) sembravano dar luogo alle prime fontane di lava. L'attività è velocemente diminuità d'intensità alcune decine di minuti dopo le 11:00 (UTC +2), producendo contenute esplosioni stromboliane, con lancio di brandelli di lava che in alcune occasioni toccavano i 100 mt di altezza per poi ricadere sui fianchi del cono di scorie cresciuto attorno alla bocca negli ultimi mesi. L'attività si è mantenuta costante fino alle ore 16:45 (UTC +2) quando è iniziato un piccolo e lento trabocco di lava dall'orlo orientale del cono di scorie, accompagnato da un moderato aumento dell'intensità delle esplosioni stromboliane. Alle ore 17:50 (UTC +2) il flusso lavico ha raggiunto la base orientale del cono del cratere di SudEst e in un paio d'ore ha percorso poche centinaia di metri verso la Valle del Bove. Per la seconda volta quest'anno si è osservata la formazione di un anello di gas proveniente dalla bocca, fenomeno che tra il 1999 e il 2000 era frequente alla Bocca Nuova e che, dopo la fine dell'attività sommitale di quegli anni, non si era più ripresentato. L'attività è lentamente cresciuta d'intensità fino alle ore 20:15 (UTC +2) quando sono comparse le <b>...</b>

A new eruptive period started at Mount Etna volcano (Sicily) in January 2011, about one-and-a-half years after the end of its latest flank eruption (May 2008-July 2009). As of late-May 2011, this new eruptive period has consisted of four paroxysmal eruptive episodes, brief but quite powerful events with tall lava fountains and ash columns as well as lava flows up to 3-4 km long. The latest of these paroxysms occurred in the night of 11-12 May 2011, culminating in the early morning hours of the 12th. Personally, I found this one of the most rewarding experiences in many years at Etna. The main phase, which continued into daybreak, was a display of stunning beauty. This is a collage of various video clips and still photographs taken by myself between the evening of 11 May and the early morning of the 12th. To this are added a few snippets recorded by our friend Giovanni Tomarchio, cameraman for the Italian Rai television, which amongst others show also myself with colleagues and my love Catherine, who saw this phenomenon for the first time close-up. This video is underlain by the music of "Norma Casta Diva", written by Catania-born composer Vincenzo Bellini in 1831. I have long considered using this music for some of my Etna footage, and this paroxysm perfectly goes with it.

La cosa più bella del rimanere giù durante un attività del genere, forse l'unica se si prende in considerazione l'enorme richiamo di avvicinarsi il più possibile, è avvertire le sensazioni della gente che osserva meravigliata. Non è questione di nazionalità o di sesso, lo stupore e la grande meraviglia di qualcosa che si scatena in un modo così spettacolare e totalmente al di fuori della portata dell'uomo prende tutti. Due spagnoli fotografi improvvisati con un cellulare di ultima generazione, l'anziano del posto, sicuro di sapere cosa stia pensando l'Etna, le ragazzine in giro per le sovraffollate strade del centro in un sabato sera di fine luglio, caldo ma ventilato. Linguaggio forbito, scurrile, complicato, genuino. Dettato sempre da sensazioni che soggettivamente ognuno vive a suo modo. Forse tanto vuoto resta sempre nel rapporto tra l'uomo e questo vulcano ma mi piace pensare che ogni volta che il vulcano fa notare la sua presenza un pò d'affetto cresca in chi l'osserva e che questo porti anche ad una maggiore considerazione verso l'Etna. E scorre lento questo fuoco e tutto si accende davanti a lui nel suo corso che porta non si sa dove. M'incanto e mi spavento nello stesso tempo nel vedere il fuoco che cammina come una spada che apre questa montagna nel buio della notte.
