EU Presidency slams "eurosceptic" Britain

www.euronews.net The head of the rotating EU Presidency has rounded on Britain over its refusal to sign up to new tougher fiscal rules. Speaking in Strasbourg, the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticised those who have backed David Cameron's position to stay outside of the deal agreed in Brussels last Friday. "I've heard the self-satisfied comments which say Britain has become an island again, and that the Channel has become larger over the last few days. Sincerely, I don't understand this satisfaction."

Eurosceptic caller calls George Galloway a liar on EU referendum

A Eurosceptic / Europhobic caller decided to phone into George Galloway's to talk about the would be EU referendum in the UK (defeated overwhelmingly in Parliament). The caller claims that Galloway berated him over the EU referendum (it was the Lisbon treaty) a few months ago but Galloway gives the man a good lecturing until right at the end when Stephen in Leeds calls Galloway a liar. This is the same Stephen in Leeds who thinks Golliwogs are not offensive, that Mossad should be allowed to take other people's identity in order to perform a hit job on some terrorist, that the smoking ban is being overturned in other EU countries, that Galloway is part of the conspiracy to ban smoking in the UK (he voted against it), that he won't be offended by ethnic slurs against Jews and so on... Debt crisis - Eurosceptic impact 1

26 Oct 2011 EuroNews Dear chaps, I'm sorry. The euro was a failure. The architects of failure now want more failure so they can turn it into an even bigger disaster. We [Greece] are the guinea pig, the testing ground. Fear of contagion from Greece to the rest of the Eurozone continues to panic the rest of global markets. It could result in an end to the euro and even a meltdown of the whole european project itself. It is a debt crisis and a credibility crisis. Leaders insist more integration is needed. But critics are furious over giving more powers to Brussels. "I plead to Barroso, please get Greece out otherwise there will be a revolution. There will be no cash left and no food on the table" = Nigel Farage

Eurosceptic headache for Finland's main parties

Finland is taking in the surprise success of the anti-euro party in the country's general election. The True Finns could form part of a coalition government after coming third, winning nearly one in five votes. It is another boost for anti-establishment nationalist parties in Europe following successes in countries such as France and the Netherlands. If the True Finns are involved in a coalition, the impact could be felt beyond Finland's borders. ... www.euronews.net

George Galloway reads 2 Eurosceptic texters

One texter claims that bringing in people from the EU would result in our benefits/welfare being depleted because they would bring themselves and their children to this coutnry. Therefore, it would cause our wealth to decline etc etc. Galloway informs the texter that bringing in immigrants would actually generate wealth, not deplete it. Another texter gives a tin hat theory in that the EU is interested in advancing a one-nation Europe. Originally broadcasted on 28th October 2011.

Shirin Wheeler chairs a discussion with 4 MEPs: Jorgo Shatzimarkakis, a German Liberal, Paul Murphy, an Irish Socialist, Timothy Kirkhope, a British Conservative and Morten Messerschmidt of the Danish Peoples Party (EFD Members) Opposition to the EU comes in a number of different flavours here. The German Liberal belongs to a party who in recent domestic elections took a Eurosceptic stance and lost 7% of their vote. If there is any genuine euroscepticim here then it stems from criticisms of the way the eurozone was formed. Irish socialist Paul Murphy is opposed to the EU on the basis that it is an organisation which forces, on behalf of bankers and hedge funds, ordinary working people to bail them out. He also believes austerity is failing in Ireland and elsewhere and yet he favours the financial transaction tax. Odd. Timothy Kirkhope is the most significant MEP here on the basis that he repositions himself and the conservatives as "Euro-realists" and pitches the so-called reform agenda. If any true conservatives see this, then there can be no doubt that EU withdrawal or even a referendum is not part of the agenda. Conservatives believe in the European project and will slowly push it forward , just like the rest. Morten Messerschmidt of the Danish People's Party of course makes the most sense. He is a genuine eurosceptic and tells it like it is, despite Shirin Wheelers snipe at him and his party, referring to them as xenophobic. Par for the course at the BBC.

Finnish electorate signal eurosceptic leanings

Finnish voters are going to the polls in a general election that could have a direct effect on Portugal's request for an economic bailout from the EU. Pre-election opinion polls predict that support for the right wing True Finns party has rocketed to more than 15 per cent from 4 per cent. That would put them in a prime position for a place in a coalition government. Led by Timo Soini it is anti-immigration and anti-European Union. And Finland, unlike others in the euro zone, can put requests for financial help to a parliamentary vote. ... www.euronews.net

Andrew Neil talks to Nikki Sinclaire alongside former Labour minister Tony McNulty about the haveyoursay.eu petition which triggered the forthcoming EU In/Out debate. Interestingly at one point Neil fluffed his line and instead of "major treaty changes" he said "major cheaty changes". An issue I have noticed coming through on this is that the Tories have created this group of allegedly Eurosceptic MP's who are now calling for "renegotiation" and that this is being paraded as the mainstream eurosceptic view. Appalling.

Three Eurosceptic Conservative MPs have claimed more than £500000 in EU farm subsidies in the past two years. New rules came into force this year obliging governments to disclose who claimed what under the much-criticised common agricultural policy. The figures show Michael Ancram, the former Tory party chairman, received £211000 for his farm in the Scottish borders. David Heathcoat-Amory, who famously claimed for bags of manure for his second home, got £114000 for his Scottish farms, while Philip Dunne was paid £201000 for his Herefordshire family farm.

HE Jaakko Iloniemi on True Europeans? Finland's EU Policy

About the Speaker: HE Jaakko Iloniemi, one of Finland's most distinguished foreign policy analysts. He is a former Finnish Ambassador to the USA, Ambassador to the CSCE and Deputy Head of Mission to the United Nations. Mr. Iloniemi has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland for his foreign policy achievements and was Chancellor of the Order from 1997 until 2004. He is currently a member of the European Council of Foreign Relations. About the Speech: HE Jaakko Iloniemi portrayed Finland as a nation that has gradually grown accustomed to increasing regional integration. Like many of their partners, Finns recognise the economic and practical benefits of EU membership, yet some emotional reservations persist. Iloniemi traced Finland's long but cautious involvement in international cooperative initiatives. With its Nordic neighbours it created a visa-free travel area and a common labour market. In 1961 Finland joined the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), attracted by the idea that cooperation was strictly confined to the economic domain and EFTA had no political aspirations. Opinion was more divided on EU accession but an advisory referendum passed with 54% of the vote and Finland became an EU member in 1995. Iloniemi admitted that Finnish politics is generally considered "quite a bore" -- by the public as well as by international commentators. However the April 2011 Finnish parliamentary elections caused a stir across Europe, with the ...

Morten Messerschmidt -new line for more democracy among the European Union

The Court of Karlsrhue, recently approving the financial package for the Eurozone, said that : "The democratic principle of budget autonomy means that the Bundestag may not approve any open-ended intergovernmental or supranational guarantee or transfer mechanism". Three years after its Lisbon verdict, the German Court seems reintroducing some democratic control in the important step of the European integration. Mep Morten Messershmidt (EFD Group), sees there "a new line for more democracy" in Europe. He comments at the same time the results of the general elections on 15th in Denmark, where the new coalition is based on the support of a leftist eurosceptic party. He's telling us if this new political situation in Danemark would mean that the new Government will put a real distance with the European integration and politics (opt out on Euro)
