Cass Scenic Railroad (snow excursion)
You simply must check out this private excursion on the Cass Scenic RR under harsh winter-like blizzard conditions! Problem is, this was NOT a winter excursion, but rather a SPRING excursion in MAY! Yes, I said MAY!! This was shot on MAY(!!) 10 1997. Actually we experience THREE seasons on this day! We depart in the fall, arrive at Bald Knob in winter, and arrive back at Cass in the spring! All within 8 hours! The temperature at Cass upon departure was about 35 degrees. At Bald Knob it was about 20, but upon our return to Cass it was almost 60! After departing Bald Knob (the line's highest point) we go on to Spruce, the site of a onetime mill town, now well past the ghost town stage. Interesting stereo effects here as the locomotive whistles echo off the mountains! Then back to Cass where there was still a bit of rain but now considerably warmer! Most of us expected a balmy spring day and didn't come prepared for a blizzard! Where I'm from we don't git no snow in May! (FYI-On our private Cass excursions we have two trains-a re-created logging train and a photographers' [photo] train that the logging train closely follows. Most of us stand on the open car at the back of the photo train and photograph the logging train as it follows us. That way we get the ultimate historical experience-the logging train as it appeared in the logging days when West Virginia Pulp and Paper [now Westvaco and relocated in Luke MD] and later Mower Lumber Company [now defunct] operated it. Mexico Travel: An Excursion to Lake Chapala, Mexcala Island, Chapala & Ajijic
I am very passionate about language study travel, and I love to improve my Spanish while being immersed locally in a Spanish-speaking country. So in February of 2010 I spent 13 days in Mexico, with a home base in Guadalajara, Mexicos second largest city. I studied Spanish at the Guadalajara Language Centre and stayed with a local family in Tlaquepaque, a picturesque neighbourhood in the southern part of Guadalajara. In addition to my 2 hours of language studies every day at the Guadalajara Language Centre, I did a number of excursions: I went to downtown Guadalajara and visited the impressive baroque church and the historic core of the city. My excursions in Tlaquepaque included a guided visit with a tourist policeman who took me up onto the bell tower of one of Tlaquepaques churches. I also got to see some samples of the artwork and handicrafts that are produced in Tlaquepaque, which is renowned for its galleries and arts stores. I visited the neighbouring arts & crafts market of Tonala, a huge outdoor market with hundreds of interesting vendors. Longer excursions took me to Lake Chapala, a popular retirement destinations for Americans and Canadians trying to escape our cold winters. My local guide Jose Orozco took me to Mexcala Island, a prison island with buildings from the early 1800s, the pretty town of Chapala and the popular retirement town of Ajijic where so many gringos have settled down permanently. It weighs about the same so it was an OK trade off. Of course, i had to give it a test listen before i decided to make the cuts to help get the bass into the cabin. This will be a LONG build but i will post as many vids as possible during the journey. I plan on making it look clean, with a plexi glass window in back (with an F logo on it) and all trimmed out to match the interior. It should look nice when done and sound even better.
