Korean Stereotypes

Click here for more ::: I asked a group of nine students what they want to say to the rest of the world about South Korea, or more generally, about Asia. They address a variety of topics, such as being good at math, being asked if they are Japanese or Chinese, and also cosmetic surgery. I've been helping these students prepare for their journey abroad to the USA this winter, and we thought making a video would be a great way to make a memory of the time that we've spent together comparing cultures, thoughts, and opinions. I'm really proud of what these students have achieved already, and I know they will all be wonderful broad-minded teachers in the future. I was inspired to make this film after watching Lena Khan's video "A Land Called Paradise". Please feel free to comment, ask questions, and leave your opinions. The song is "Traveler" by Korean indie musician Soul Park. Download Soul Park's latest album here: itunes.apple.com

An unprecedented level of thanks for expatkerri for not hesitating to accept this request, for putting so much effort into it and for doing such a flawless job. Also thanks to 선화 for translating English -- Korean, especially considering the English of the song is so often, quite frankly, bizarre. And finally thanks to Samir Taha Abdulhamid (I just like saying his full name) for translating Korean --- English - The man behind the words of the Azalea poem recorded in an earlier video. There are a few mistakes in video editing here and there, but they couldn't be changed with this laptop, so I just left them for... character. Enjoy!

Canadian Talking Korean

After 14 months living in Korea, I've arrived in Vancouver for a few weeks to visit my sister and look at the mountains. This was the first day without rain ~ so I thought I'd make a video to keep practicing my Korean so I don't forget everything... I've been dabbling with Korean for the past two years, but now I've been seriously studying on my own since February, so this is what I've got at 9 months. Still pretty basic, but I'm trying! My goal is to attend Ewha University next summer and really improve my understanding. FIGHTING!!! leave a comment and tell me what you want to eat.. in the world of foods.. what do you want to eat today? or correct my grammar...

메로나 진실 이야기~ (with English subtitles)

What is the secret ingredient in melona?!!?! Why is it so delicious???? Their logo is a honeydew melon, but the flavour isn't that of the honeydew melon. What could it be? Watch and see as Kerri explains it in artful Korean to you. My boyfriend explained to me that the taste of honeydew melon was "unfamiliar" when it was first introduced in Korea. The ice cream wasn't that popular, so they changed the flavour to be more "familiar" and the ice cream quickly became extremely popular. It is now available in over 15 countries worldwide, and it still only costs 90 cents (900원) for a bar here in Korea. By the way, for those of you wondering... 멜론 - honeydew melon 참외 - yellow melon 키위 - kiwi 딸기 - strawberry THANKS FOR WATCHING ME ^______^

Korean Supermarket in Toronto

I was in Koreatown in Toronto on Monday afternoon, and I made this short video from inside a big Korean grocery store called PAT. You can buy fresh kimchi, Korean veggies, drinks, noodles, snacks, frozen treats, and even red bean filled pancake fish (called 붕아빵)! I visited this grocery store a lot when I lived in Toronto to get myself ingredients to make the few Korean dishes I know how to make. It's wonderful to be able to buy the exact same foods that you can find in Korea here in Canada. It certainly helps Korean visitors feel more at home when they can buy comfort foods like 떡 and 신라면 :) If you want to visit this supermarket, exit Christie subway station out to Bloor Street, and walk east on Bloor until you reach PAT on the south side. It's a big white building with a blue sign. They also sell MELONA! Yes!!! Thanks for watching everyone. Subscribe for more of my videos here: www.youtube.com/expatkerri

Dating in Korea

Useful vocabulary: 1) "Kate..." 'uh, my name is Kerri.' "Kate! I love you!" 2) Let's go to a motel, no thanks, okay, let's go 3) Where's the nearest DVD Bang? Oh there is one conveniently above the arbitrary coffee shop we chose These are my impressions about some of the differences between dating in Canada and dating in Korea. I don't mean to say that I prefer one over the other, or to say Canadian style dating is better, because if anything I might say Korean style is better.. but I'm just expressing my thoughts. It's possible that the things I noticed about Korean dating styles could be products of my own misconceptions or hangups about love in general, or it could have more to do with being highly sensitive to certain behaviours because I am a person living in a foreign country. I think when you are traveling in a new place, sometimes you subconsciously take on a more observational / idealistic / impressionistic role. At any rate, I'm interested in the experiences of other expats here in Korea, and those who have experience dating Koreans. Or Koreans who have dated or married non-Korean people. How's it going?

Korean Culture Shock!! "Teacher is fat today"

I'm gonna go on a limb and say almost everyone thinks they are fat in Korea. Even my 54kg teeny tiny students say they need to go on a diet for losing weight... it's insane. When I tell them they are not fat at all, they just go "NOOO" and point at the place where belly fat would be if they had any. So, in this video I share a bit about my experiences about being not extremely skinny in Korea. I have a healthy body image, so please don't worry if some of the things I say sound like I think I'm fat. I don't think I'm fat, at all. Female Korean friends of mine (the close ones) will often comment "You lost weight" or "You gained weight" upon first seeing each other after a while. It almost seems like it might be out of concern for each others' health, but I'm not totally sure. Maybe women hear these words from their mothers, and are just passing on to me what they're been taught. I really don't know... but I do know that I always make a mental bet with myself that she will certainly say I've gained weight or lost weight. YAY for making bets with yourself. And YAY for watching my video, subscribing for more madness in Korea, and feather earrings! this is a response video to DURKEE's video: www.youtube.com

i shall be released- bob dylan cover

this is my new electric guitar, only three days old. we are becoming well acquainted. "I shall be released" by Bob Dylan and the Band (who else?) They say ev'rything can be replaced, Yet ev'ry distance is not near. So I remember ev'ry face Of ev'ry man who put me here. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. They say ev'ry man needs protection, They say ev'ry man must fall. Yet I swear I see my reflection Some place so high above this wall. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. Standing next to me in this lonely crowd, Is a man who swears he's not to blame. All day long I hear him shout so loud, Crying out that he was framed. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released.

KOREAN PICK UP LINES / 유혹하는말

I made up these pick lines over a few days coming up to Valentine's day, and filmed it on a Friday night. It all happened after I got to thinking, why aren't there any lists of cheesy Korean pickup lines as there are in English? I grabbed my pen and started writing them down, and it seems a lot of them have to do with food! These are intended to be for humourous purposes, to make you guys laugh, and I guess that's the point of a pickup line, right? As an ice-breaker~~ I'm not suggesting you use these, but if you try, let me know how they go!! And if you think of other Korean pickup lines, post them in the comment section below. And thanks to Jade for helping me with the boy pickup lines!! You're awesome!! Show some love?
