UK to close borders, evacuate expats if euro collapses

As Eurozone nations sink ever deeper into crisis, the UK Treasury is working on a contingency plan for the single currency's collapse. It includes capital control measures that, under EU rules, require agreement from most of the Union members. Britain is also prepared to close its borders and evacuate expats and holidaymakers from the effected countries. Robert Oulds, president of the Bruge Groups of campaigners against excess unification in Europe says many countries will benefit if euro collapses. The Expat Explorer Survey

This video animates the key findings from www.expatexplorer.hsbc.com - the world's largest survey of expats. 4000 expats answered questions relating to their finances, quality of life, and even what it's like to raise children abroad. If you moved abroad, what would you want to know? Transcript Every year, millions of people move abroad to boost their earning potential or to find a better way of life. In two-thousand-and-ten, Russia was home to the world's wealthiest expats, followed closely by the Middle East. In fact, in Bahrain expats found they had significantly more disposable income than before they moved. For some people, earning more isn't as important as the opportunity for new experiences; Qatar is the number one country in the world for making friends with other expats, but in Canada expats are more likely to integrate, spending as much time with local friends as other expats. For parents, a key consideration is the health and wellbeing of their children. Over ninety percent of expat parents in Hong-Kong felt their children's safety had improved, and in Australia children were likely to attend local schools and spend more time outdoors. When thinking about retirement, expats found the best place for good food, healthcare and a better quality of life was Thailand. Over two-hundred-million people worldwide have decided to start a new life overseas. If you moved abroad, what would you want to know? Two Expats, or How to Become a European

Two expat cousins learn what it's like to live as Europeans without losing their American roots. Unlike the Americans in Paris in the '20s, Ryan Erwin of Durham, NC, and Courtney-Anne Erwin of Shreveport, LA, left the US for love. Ryan has been in Germany since 2005, and is now restoring historic boats in Hamburg. Courtney-Anne moved to the Netherlands in 2010 to join her fiance. Until late 2011, she was working as a marketer for a biotech firm in Amsterdam. The lessons they've learned will be useful for any expat moving anywhere. "Two Expats" was produced in Dec. 2011 by Bill Erwin for the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. He is Ryan's father and Courtney-Anne's uncle.

Bahrain expats launch opposition TV channel

Bahrain's government stamped down anti-government protests in February, and since then hardly any news has filtered out of the island nation due to strict control over the media. Bahraini expatriates have set up a TV channel in London, with the aim of giving viewers around the world an unbiased account of what is currently happening in Bahrain. Despite having been plagued with obstacles since their launch last month, the small team behind the channel is determined to continue, but for now it can be watched only on the internet. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from London.

Living in Riyadh: Expat View on Shopping

There's a time for bejeweled daggers and bangles, and then there's the rest of life. A primary destination for anyone touching down in Riyadh is the souk, or market. All sorts of luxury goods, spices and kitsch are ready to be haggled over here, but in reality, expats who relocate to Saudi Arabia's capital spend far more time roaming the polished, climate-controlled expanses of modern malls than negotiating the winding aisles of a souk. And when it comes to malls, there's plenty to pick from. High-end everything is on sale in Riyadh. (In fact, anyone with understated tastes might have to dig deep, as bling can seem to be perennially in style.) Al Faisaliyah and Mamlaka shopping centers are located downtown, with the latter notably home to an entire ladies-only floor. Malls aren't just for shopping, though. Wandering the generous spaces of the Hayat or the vast Sahara complex provide a much-needed distraction during the withering summer months. There are restaurants, kiddie playlands, and plenty of parking. Large-scale grocery outlets are also included in the mall deal. Patrons can purchase most of their favorites from back home at stores like Tamimi (which stocks Safeway goods), Carrefour or Hyperpanda. Those looking for home furnishings turn toward the Saco mall, or to the familiar décor found at IKEA. In other words, Riyadh's shopping world is full-up, leaving the retail-crazed spoiled for choice. Aussie Expats in Bali, Travel Video Guide

I plan on filming a night out in the Kuta Beach tourism precinct but instead meet some Australians running a local bar and settle in to learn about visa requirements for expats. Australians over 65 get a special 12 month visa which means many stay in Bali in order to stretch the value of their pensions. I also film the common Kuta species, Australis Drunkis Yobbois, which flys to bali from Australia in large packs in the summer months. It is known for it's loud call and colorful tattoo plumage.
