Logical vs. Fallacious Thinking

Creationists and Scientists speak in different language not because one thinks of god and one doesn't, but because the METHOD of deducing reasonable conclusions is completely opposite. If you're a logical person, perhaps I'll manage to demonstrate where I think the difference is. If you're a creationist, take these differences into account before you try to convince any scientifically minded person, and encounter problems in your own logical deductions. Enjoy, ~moo

Ex-Atheist Makes Case for Christ - Lee Strobel (1 of 2)

There's a new DVD out that could make a great Christmas gift this holiday season. It tells about one man's amazing journey from atheism to faith in Jesus Christ. Investigative journalist Lee Strobel conducted a two-year investigation of the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. His goal was to disprove the claims of Christ. "I was a journalist, so there was really no problem with me picking up the phone and calling a scholar and saying, 'Hey, I'm Lee Strobel. I'm with The Chicago Tribune. Jason has been a long time member of Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship and spoke there while he was pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Dr. Jason Lisle gives viewers a fast paced course on logic. In addition to reviewing numerous logical fallacies, Dr. Lisle gives examples of how evolutionists often use fallacious arguments in arguing for their position. Learning to recognize these fallacies provides a whole new opportunity for defending the Christian faith and arguing for the truth of creation. Blunt Dismissive Assertions and Critical Thinking

A clarification of a recent criticim of a video by ZJemptv (ZinniaJones) www.youtube.com Intellectual Traits www.criticalthinking.org Re: Intellectual STANDARDs www.criticalthinking.org Blunt Assertions Blanket Statements Dismissive Over Simplifications I have had it suggested to me in the comments to my video by a D Eric Kesler that the blunt assertion exemplified by Zee Jay (ZJemtv) was in fact a rational statement. Further he say's it is not fallacious, arrogant, presumptuous or self-righteous. With regards to whether or not it is fallacious, he is correct. But notably he makes the straw-man here since I corrected myself in expressing this sentiment. As to the other adjectives I am not going to delve into definitions, but I do stand by them. The exact parallel of such behaviour at the beginning of this video serving to illustrate this point. I do want discuss what a blunt assertion is, like the one Zee Jay explains to us about some third party - 'stating SIMPLY that there aren't any gods'. Our commentator Mr Kesler would have it that this is a rational statement. To a degree I can sympathise with it as a partially rational conclusion. But in the context of a dialogue, merely to jump to your conclusions in a dismissive way is the epitome of arrogance. Again as shown demonstrably by in my introduction. May be it was our friend Mr Kesler who made this statement. The justification for this not being a 'rational statement', in my opinion, is because to be rational in ...

Russellian Science: "The Illusions of our Senses", Erik Johansson & his Impossible photography

Here are some Case examples for the "illusion of our Senses" as Walter Russell taught, which give mankind a false perception to the workings of our Universe. All "knowing" comes from stillness, "the sill magnetic light", which is immune to these sensory based observations. Erik's photography is a perfect lesson about how our senses can be deceived by the appearances of light. There are several more vids in the sidebar showing Erik's work of exploiting this limitation of our senses and the fallacious interpretations of our "thinking" when we conclude what we are seeing with them, "impossible photos", like Russell's train tracks meeting on the horizon analogy. We "know" these things are impossible, which is a higher level of awareness, than "thinking" with illusions as the "substance" for our thoughts. Refuting Theist Arguments - Begging the Question

Refuting Theist Arguments -- Begging the Question One common argument used by many fundamentalist theists to try to prove the existence of their deity, or to try to prove that their holy book is the word of their deity, is a fallacy known as begging the question. Begging the question is a logical fallacy in which the conclusion is assumed in one of the premises. For example, a Christian might say: "It says in the Bible that God exists. Since the Bible is God's word, and God never speaks falsely, then everything in the Bible must be true. So, God must exist." The problem with this argument is obvious to those of us who are familiar with basic principles of logic. The conclusion is that god exists, but to arrive at that conclusion the Christian already assumed that the bible is the word of god (ie assumed that god exists). Clearly this is a circular line of reasoning. Some reasons why many theists do not see the flaws in their reasoning are: -They have been indoctrinated into only believing their religion (ie they are blinded by their absolute conviction in their religion) -They are arguing from emotion and desire rather than an objective, logical position -They have been taught to believe in the word of their holy texts over logic, science, and reason (ie they have been brainwashed into thinking that logic cannot be trusted) To theists who try to prove the existence of their deity using their holy texts, or who try to prove that their holy texts are the word of their deity ...

Fallacy of intelligent design-circular reasoning.

Sorry for the hiatus-occupied as hell. Here's likely my last video on this stuff. Most "evidence" for ID commits a false dichotomy and/or argument from ignorance as it presents "negative evidence." This video shows why intelligent design is inherently circular reasoning whenever it tries to follow the scientific method or tries to find "positive evidence" for design, or claims to be doing "research" by studying "specified complexity" in living systems. By the end, hopefully, you'll see why it's illogical for ID to do "research" when looking for these "characteristics of intelligence", by concluding a non-life intelligence. Music-Room of Angel, from the Silent Hill 4-The Room soundtrack (it's a video game). Piano version and the one performed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. *Disclaimer* Once again, this is not an attack on religion per se. It's a defence for science and logic. Oh, and please don't retort by claiming how "science commits circular reasoning too," then proceed to state how science claims "such and such", which is circular reasoning. Before you do that, look at the circular argument you're claiming that science makes. Now, try to find a reputed scientific source that actually makes that argument in question. You know, just to make sure people aren't bullshitting stuff and putting it in the mouth of science. And no, some dubious creationist website you likely read this off of is not a good enough source to be voicing what science is arguing. Until you do, please do ...

Happiness: The Fallacy

This is a poem that i wrote today. Im sorry if it sounds a bit rushed. i was trying to get it off without mistakes lol & the photobooth on my mac was acting gay & this seemed to be the only way i could get it to record. But yea. hope you guys like it *Actual poem (incase you can't hear me)* I see why they call it the pursuit of happiness... Because you'll never quite catch it. You'll fall prey to the fabrication of a dying nation grasping at an evaporating dream. Seems they gleam lie and promote things that are... fallacious in their means, not to help the individual but to keep us all happy with the residuals of what it means to be.. elated. We have been little more baited. Working for the man, working for the skirts. Everything is done with an ulterior motive to motivate others to give you joy you so rightfully deserve for free. We see these things seen on the tv screen & say "if only" but, "if only" does little more than leave you sad, lonely, & covetous of the splendor you forever seek. Now made meek by you hands scarred with perseverance, knowing not that which you chased in utterly impossible. You pass thinking that when you re-awake in another place that it is at least plausible. The thought is deniable, but unheard to the masses. "Keep them in a perpetual stupor" that what the world is programed to do for "you". Yes finally the individual, see "if we can keep them thinking its all green & serene humanity will work itself out, find its own way to smile" Thats ...

The Lost Cosmonauts Critical Thinking I'm going to talk about the benefits of applying critical thinking stories that we hear in the popular media, and the example I'll be focusing on is the story of the Lost Cosmonauts: Soviet Cosmonauts supposed to have died in space, but who were erased from history. A fallacious ad hominem argument has the following basic form: Person "A" makes claim "X". There is something objectionable about Person "A". Therefore claim "X" is false. Ad hominem is one of the best known of the logical fallacies usually enumerated in introductory logic and critical thinking textbooks. Both the fallacy itself, and accusations of having committed it, are often brandished in actual discourse. As a technique of rhetoric, it is powerful and used often because of the natural inclination of the human brain to recognize patterns. In the context of the Church of Scientology and Anonymous, it sounds a lot like this: Anonymous makes the claim that the Church of Scientology is an abusive organization. The Church of Scientology states that Anonymous is a terrorist, a bigot, a hate criminal, and etc. Therefore Anonymous's claims are false. As you can tell, this does not make sense. Their attacks on our collective character in no way refutes the incarceration of Lisa McPherson. It does not refute claims of their harassment of critics such as Paulette Cooper, Tory Magoo, Arnie Lerma, Shawn Lonsdale, Wise Beard Man, Ex-Scientologists, and Freezoners. It does not refute FBI documents on Operation Snow White or Operation Freakout. It does not refute claims of slave labour within the Rehabilitation Project Force It does not refute the fact that David Miscavige is an asthmatic dwarf It does not refute the fact that Psychiatry is objective science and that Scientology is ...

William Lane Craig 2 - Craig Harder (Refuting WLC's Proofs For God, Part II)

I first encountered WLC in a debate with Antony Flew; I've taken my clips from the videos, which start with this one: www.youtube.com WLC is an odd one. Read his Wikipedia entry and you form the impression of some minor deity fallen to earth for the purposes of theological instruction. Then, upon seeing him speak, you realise two things: he's a more than usually convincing orator with a soothing voice (in fact his arguments tend to be presented practically identically in different circumstances), and his logic is as fallacious as that of any less loquacious Christboys. In fact he is, in at least some senses, totally batshit. His primary evidence for God is his own personal witness of the holy spirit, and even if proof arises against his belief (which to my thinking it already has) he doesn't think it matters. That is the mark of a profoundly broken mind. Bear in mind the proofs he's given are not what convinced him in the first place. In this second part, WLC offers his opinion that the universe must be fine-tuned for life by a designer (but clearly only the Christian designer) and I edit the holy shizbits out of his hand movements.
