Fallkniven A1: Compact Efficiency

The A1 is just 14 oz but sports a nearly 1/4" thick blade. From my other "clinic" videos, I've demonstrated how such a thicker blade makes wilderness tasks easier, expending less energy. This is a huge advantage of this compact survival knife that few others possess. Other great features of the A1 include: laminated VG10 steel that will serve well in high moisture areas (and CeraCoated in black), a comfortable handle, full tang that can deliver defensive impacts, a convex grind, a good Kydex (now Zytel) sheath, and a reasonably price for such a high quality blade. This is the type of knife that disproves the oft-heard custom knife maker criticism that says production blades suck. A limitation of the design is its 6.3" blade which for me is on the short side for a wilderness blade. However often weight and size are very important and our system needs will prevent carrying a larger, heavier blade. In those situations this Fallkniven A1 is ideal and it will serve admirably as both a wilderness or tactical fixed blade. Improvements could include a quick detach method for the sheath, a longer handle (by just 1/2"), and maybe one day a full flat grind :-). Also please NOTE that I had reports on the brittleness of this laminated VG1 steel and ("mtbaddict" has his A1's tip break off) it seems you'll trade off some toughness for increased rust resistance. Still, the A1 is a capable blade and compact in dimensions, that can serve you well in the woods. SAFETY NOTE: These videos ...

Fallkniven A1: Wilderness Calling

It's strong, Sweedish, and laminated. The capable Fallkniven A1 is one of my top mid sized survival knife picks, especially when things get wet and stay wet. While I am a big fan of the high value carbon steel survival knives, they aren't right for every situation and I have found that in high moisture/salt/precip environs their blades will rust faster than you can care for them. Some high tech coatings can help this propensity quite a bit(DuraCoat, baked-on Dow Corning "MolyCote 3400A") but that relief and cutting edge will always be exposed (and coatings can wear off). That's where the Fallkniven laminated VG10 stainless steel blades come into their own. The 13 .4 ounce (370 grams) A1 can surprise you with its capabilities too Credit its .24 (6mm) thick clip blade which is seen in few other factory produced stainless survival blades. This thick blade gives the A1 outstanding swing and heft. It achieved impressive wood chopping and splitting capabilities beyond its mid-size category in TNP testing. While the A1 could serve is a variety of wilderness roles (like LBE combat blade), its true calling is in the wilderness and Fallkniven accurately identifies and substantiates this use in their literature. Like some other Fallkniven blades, the A1 Fallkniven says it has passed some arduous bending/breakage tests (data shown) which substantiates the laminated steel concept. This composite blade features a VG10 steel core sandwiched between 420J2 exterior layers. This makes the ...

ESEE 4 Knife Review with Comparisons to Fallkniven F1

ESEE 4 Knife Review with Comparisons to Fallkniven F1 This is a review of the ESEE-4 knife. I compare it to the Fallkniven F1 which has a similar sized (about 4") blade. I am using the knife in the field for the review in snow conditions. In this review: - Discussion of the knife, fit and finish - Overall feel of the knife in cold condition - Carving and making tinder for the firesteel - Firesteel fire - Closing comments This would be a good knife for someone looking for a flat grind blade that can take some abuse. Fit and finish is excellent along with the sheath. The price point is good for the quality of the knife. The blade length makes it a good all around knife with a more combat oriented look. fallkniven f1 knife review in sweden part 1 of 2

part 1 of 2: On a recent trip of mine I've used the fallkniven f1 in it's home country Sweden for lots of stuff. You'll see all the action during the canoe trip across some lakes. Firemaking, batonning, fishing, bushcraft stuff, building shelters etc., putting the f1 to good use. In an earlier review of mine on youtube, I already expressed my admiration for the f1 and you'll see in this video why that is so. It held up really well, kept it's sharpness very well, was easy to sharpen with a small spyderco pocketstone (doublestuff) and the edge did not chip out. There's some sort of urban legend out there that the f1 will chip under heavy use. It will chip if you hit rocks and sand etc. So will every other knife in the world. But during my heavy batonning sessions a couple of times a day and in all the other use I put it through that week, after some times that I dropped it on the ground: NO chipping at all! With that out of the way, let me say again that I think it's an excellent knife, cuts really well, has good ergonomics and comfortable grip, a thick fat spine and a good blade shape with a strong full tang construction. This is a knife you will have no regrets about if you get it. I pimped the knife with a custom kydex sheath by well known Dutch sheath maker Martin Swinkels (martinsheaths.blogspot.com) and he again did an excellent job. Check out my rc-4 review on the Scottish west highland way for another review on one of his sheaths. THe philosophy for this sheath was ...

Fallkniven A2 Wilderness knife: One of the Best

One of my top favs for my outdoor excursions. Hailing from Sweden, this large survival knife gets the job done. Built of quality laminated SS, similar to San Mai III, its will keep its edge with the best of them. Moreover it's much more rust resistant in humid environments unlike the 1095 or other tool steel knives. The 8" blade can process a lot of wood for fire making, build shelters, wind breaks, or fire reflectors with ease. This particular A2 of mine has seen lots of use and has never let me down. Mine came with a quality Fallkniven leather sheath but a Kydex upgrade is on the list for me. The Kraton grip is comfortable although I would like it to have more length. It's an expensive at around ($200 to $250) and hard to find blade but if you want a tough, rust resistant survival knife, this is it.

A review of the Fallkniven H1 with comparisons to the Fallkniven F1. This is a great knife with more rounded blade than the F1 and slightly thicker handle. Adding a Tinder Pocket to a Custom Fallkniven F1 Sheath [HD]

If you have found the collection of leatherwork videos helpful and would like to send me a small donation there are details on how you can do so as well as info on the videos here: ianatkinson.net This video shows how I went about adding a little tinder or utility pocket to the front of a sheath that I was making for a custom yew handled Fallkniven F1. It does not show the whole sheath making process this time (see the RAT RC-3 video for a similar process). These sorts of pockets are common on Hedgehog Leatherworks' sheaths and other makers' sheaths too, they look good if there is space and are useful but do add quite a lot of work! Please see www.ianatkinson.net for more pics and info. Audio track is 'Barra Barra' by Richard Taha from the album Made in Medina.
