Opeth - "Famine"

Artist: Opeth Album: Heritage Song Title: Famine Year: 2011 Track 7 Lyrics: I can't see your face And I can't breathe your air So I wonder why I get cold inside When I hear your name When we meet eye to eye I will ask how and why And when guilt has its way One lesser reason to stay And I will see her cry Into the fire of our youth comes the devil again And you feel your way, feel your way Saw you standing nigh In the corner Told me that you had died And I would die when my heart was empty Become a ghost in perpetual void And neglect all reasons why Track 7 from Opeth's 2011 album release, Heritage. This is one of the cooler songs off the album and I can't believe it's not out on YouTube. YET. Enjoy. If you like doom metal and Jethro Tull then the breakdown at 4:39 is your kind of cookie. A melodic jazz organ, a fluttering flute and a very raw sounding guitar riff all played in this slow and intense fashion. I don't own the rights to this song. I'm only saying this so you YouTube folks don't report the video and call it back for some kind of copyright infringement, not that I think it'll work, but it's worth a shot.

Millions face famine in Somalia

The United Nations has declared a state of famine in some parts of southern Somalia where the worst drought in over half a century is already being blamed for thousands of deaths. An estimated 3.7 million people, or more than one-third of Somalia's population, is in need of emergency aid, the UN's food agency said on Wednesday. "Every day of delay in assistance is literally a matter of life or death for children and their families in the famine-affected areas," Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Somalia, said. "It is likely that tens of thousands will already have died, the majority of those being children." The UN has appealed for $300m to help victims of the drought, and aid groups have criticised the slow response of many Western governments to fund the shortfall. Famine in East Africa

East Africa is currently experiencing its worst drought in over 60 years, causing famine conditions in parts of Somalia and a growing refugee crisis. At least 12 million people in Somalia and neighboring Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti are suffering from acute food shortages and malnutrition. AJWS has already begun responding to the crisis, partnering with a humanitarian aid organization to provide emergency medical services and distribute food to refugees in Dadaab Refugee Camp in north eastern Kenya. Our partners are also working with communities in drought-affected areas to distribute water supplies, and build sanitation facilities to stop the spread of deadly diseases like cholera. -------------------------------------------------------- Still Photo credits, in order of appearance: 1. Famine Victim Loses Children

Famine Victim Loses Children Residents of the Horn of Africa may have evaded the pressure of Islamist militants, but they have yet to escape starvation. While some have sought rescue at camps in Mogadishu, they are still vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. Mohammed Moalim lost all five of his children to malnutrition and disease at one of the feeding camps , as he couldn't afford the funds for medicine. UNICEF estimates that 640000 children are suffering from severe malnutrition across the country. Meanwhile the worst drought Somalia has been experiencing in decades has taken a toll on livestock and sub sequentially, food price. In the town of Dhobely, which borders Kenya, buildings bear the scars of gun battles between troops and islamist militants. Aside conflict and drought, aid has been rejected by the rebels when they were in control of certain regions of the country, leaving 3.6 million Somalis on the edge of starvation. Currently, while humanitarian agencies have been shipping emergency food and makeshift shelters, the Food and Agricultural Organization have appealed for roughly 70 million US dollars to strengthen Somalia's impoverished food sources. "We are in the middle of a dry period and you can see around that it is completely dry and people have exhausted their stocks. So that means either we intervene with both food and other activities bringing cash into the communities -- or they will continue to die. And in some areas of the country there was only 25 ...

FAO declares end of famine in Somalia

The Food and Agricultural Organization declared Somalia famine free on Friday, after a season of remarkable harvest but warned of its reappearance in 100 days if farmers are not provided proper aid and support. Aid agencies have been able to address issues of famine in the African country but received a bout of good luck with rain. According to Jose Graziano, the United Nations food and agricultural agency's Director General, the recent harvest in Somalia was twice the average of the past 17 years, lowering food costs but the mortality rate in southern Somalia is still one of the highest in the world. "We got this season more than 200 percent improvements in some food staple crops and we can do that if we are able to support the farmers in this forthcoming 90 days. We have less than 100 days to avoid another famine in the region, that is the important message," said Graziano. The UN said the number of Somalis threatened with starvation had decreased from 750000 to 250000 in November last. "The good news does not mean that the crisis is over. We still have a huge problem in the region particularly in Somalia and also in other countries that you know are facing similar situation like the Sahel region in particular the South Sudan," added Graziano. Despite delivery of aid to camps in the country's capital Mogadishu, fighting continues to affect southern Somalia, making it difficult for aid workers to reach victims. Canadian Documentary on the 2011 Famine in Somalia

Canadian documentary on the 2011 famine in Somalia. Although famine conditions have ended in war-torn Somalia six months after they were declared, the situation remains dire with a third of the population still needing emergency aid. At least 2.34 million people or about a third of the country still need support across Somalia, while hunger will grow in the lean period before the next harvest in the conflict-ridden Horn of Africa nation. "We have less than 100 days to avoid a new famine in the region," Jose Graziano da Silva, the head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). There is serious concern that if Somalis do not have the security to tend their crops and animals, or the freedom to access clean water and food in the markets, the humanitarian situation will deteriorate once again.

The Terrible Ukrainian Famine of 1932-33

The dreadful famine that engulfed Ukraine, the northern Caucasus, and the lower Volga River area in 1932-1933 was the result of the Soviet Union's Joseph Stalin's policy of forced collectivization. The heaviest losses occurred in Ukraine, which had been the most productive agricultural area of the Soviet Union. Stalin was determined to crush all vestiges of Ukrainian nationalism. Thus, the famine was accompanied by a devastating purge of the Ukrainian intelligentsia and the Ukrainian Communist party itself. The famine broke the peasants' will to resist collectivization and left Ukraine politically, socially, and psychologically traumatized. The policy of all-out collectivization instituted by Stalin in 1929 to finance industrialization had a disastrous effect on agricultural productivity. Nevertheless, in 1932 Stalin raised Ukraine's grain procurement quotas by 44%. This meant that there would not be enough grain to feed the peasants, since Soviet law required that no grain from a collective farm could be given to the members of the farm until the government's quota was met. Stalin's decision and the methods used to implement it condemned millions of peasants to death by starvation. Party officials, with the aid of regular troops and secret police units, waged a merciless war of attrition against peasants who refused to give up their grain. Even indispensable seed grain was forcibly confiscated from peasant households. Any man, woman, or child caught taking even a handful ...

Somalia Famine 2011 - Photos

Title: Somalia Famine 2011 - Photos Edited by: Pummie Sirisachdecha Date: September 2011 The problem when a child is dying from starvation is that they can't wait. They can't put their hunger on pause until the media highlights their crisis, and the world sends enough food and aid. Instead, they will slowly starve and wither to their death. Hunger is a silent killer. It is not as dramatic as a tsunami or an earthquake, and so the news and public tend to largely ignore it. 12 million people in Northeast Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti) are facing death due to famine right now. In Somalia alone, 29000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days, with another 2 million children inching further away from life as every hour slips by. For them, life and death are just a heartbeat apart. By the time you read this, it will already be too late for some. Endless Famine - Ethiopia

December 2008 In the 80s the West was shocked by images of Ethiopias starving children and aid poured in from across the world. Now Ethiopias economy is booming. But once again babies are dying of malnutrition. What went wrong? In Ethiopias capital Addis Abbaba the signs of new wealth are everywhere. Glass sky-rise blocks dwarf traditional stone settlements, and with daybreak hundreds of builders arrive at the citys construction sites. But on the outskirts is a very different scene. A long queue is forming here. Word has spread that cheap, government-subsidised food will be sold here. We ask one man if he has trouble feeding himself. Yes, he says, because of the Food Shortage. Just very recently we hit the worst, local woman Valerie Browning tells us. But the Developed World, the Ethiopian government and even many aid agencies want Ethiopia to be a success story. That means the real story often goes untold. At the breadline government security arrives and forces us to leave. This happens every day to news crews in Ethiopia. The government dont want to say that there is another side of the story, explains Former Ethiopian MP Gebru Asrat. The majority of the population do live in dire poverty. And in Ethiopia millions are getting poorer every year.

Somalia famine spreads 'beyond reach of aid'

Famine has spread to a sixth area of Somalia and tens of thousands of people have died as a result of severe food shortages, the United Nations has said. More than half of Somalia's entire population faces a severe food shortage, and the world body has now officially extended the famine zone. In Mogadishu, there are now half a million refugees and there are warnings from the UN that the famine could spread to the entire south of the country by the end of the year. The UN says it needs at least $1bn, but one leading charity says the public is being mislead into believing that money can solve the crisis. Medicine Sans Frontiere, Doctors Without Borders, wants international aid agencies to admit that reaching some of the worst affected victims of famine may not be possible. The French-based charity has criticised aid agencies and parts of the media for glossing over the realities of the situation. The World Food Programme, which is providing most of Somalia's food, says lives can be saved, but admits there are millions of people it cannot reach. Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri reports from Mogadishu.
Did the Irish Famine Constitute Genocide? With Dr Francis Boyle, Professor of International Law

United Ireland, Human Rights and International Law Dr Francis A. Boyle Professor of International Law, University of Illinois During the past three decades, international legal expert Francis A. Boyle has dealt with some of the most difficult problems created by Britain's continued military occupation of six northeast counties in Ireland. In so doing, he along with other Irish Americans engaged the formidable Irish American domestic lobby in support of the Irish resistance. This book addresses some of the most important aspects of their historic campaigns—the struggle to prevent deportation of Irish freedom-fighter, Joe Doherty, the protest against the US-UK Extradition Treaty of 2006, the effort to engage US multinationals in implementing the MacBride Principles to roll back discrimination against Catholics in Northern Ireland. But most significantly, Boyle makes the legal case for viewing the horrific Irish "Potato Famine"—the Irish Hecatomb—as a result, not of laissez-faire economic policy, but of intentional British genocide. This is the definitive book on all legal/political/human rights aspects of the Irish conflict, including Britain's international legal obligation to decolonize Northern Ireland and going forward, a legal and human rights framework for establishing a United Ireland where all Irish can live in peace with justice for all irrespective of their differences.
