The Farallon Islands

The Farallon Islands are often called "the Galapagos of California", because the islands and surrounding waters team with so much wildlife. The Farallon Islands: Past, Present, and Future is a new DVD that presents the past, present and future of these magnificent wilderness areas. From blue, humpback and gray whales, great white sharks, dolphins, and sea lions and seals, to the largest sea bird rookery in the continuous United States, the Farallon Islands are a wildlife bonanza. Exploited for the past 400 years, with devastating consequences to its wildlife, these islands and surrounding waters are now completely protected, and wildlife is returning at a slow but optimistic rate. This DVD is 40 minutes in length.

A Little Cruise (Farallon Islands)-Kenny Howell

When the air is reasonably free of mist and fog we can see them out there, marking the horizon. The Farallon Islands rise up enigmatic on the edge of the continental shelf, familiar and yet mysterious. The islands themselves are protected and off-limits. Few coastsiders, though they often see them in the distance, have ventured the twenty-six miles out to visit with them. Kenny Howell, in this third installment of his video series Messing Around In Boats takes us there on a scientific research vessel, NOAA's Fulmar. If you haven't been to the Farallones this is a must-see fourteen minutes. (It took us over seven hours on the water.) (Edited from the original 14 minutes--see the original at www.montarafog.com)

Science in the City: Journey to the Farallones

Twenty-seven miles beyond the Golden Gate, the craggy Farallon Islands have been home to fur seal hunters from Russia, a gold-era egg business, and even a nuclear waste dump. Today they're home to 250000 sea birds, not to mention seals, sea lions, whales, and sharks. What makes these stark-looking islands so attractive to wildlife?

White Shark at Farallones

Like most living things, white sharks aren't always hunting and eating. Sometimes they just swim around...peacefully. TOPP researcher Sal Jorgensen caught this one after he attached a satellite tag to it. For more info, go to www.topp.org.

Farallones Trip 9-26, 27-2009

This is a video of portions of a trip to the Farallon islands aboard the sailboat void star. We set out on a two day voyage with the hope of seeing some Great White Sharks. This is the time of year when the great whites are feeding in the waters around the Farallons. The Farallones are a small group of islands about 25 miles west of the golden gate bridge. People are not allowed to go ashore. Many marine animals and birds migrate through the area. While we didn't see any great whites, we did see a lot of other sea life including dolphins, seal lions, grey whales and all sorts of birds, some of which is on the video. The video also shows some fishing boats along the shore where cage divers were trying to get a closeup look at the great whites. The highlight of the trip unfortunately did not make it to the video. As we were motoring from Drakes Bay to the Farallones, Andrew spotted some splashing activity off the starboard bow, about 1/2 to 1 mile out. All of the sudden, here comes Moby Dick completely out of the ocean like a jumbo jet, flippers spread wide and back arched, exposing its white belly to us and the rising eastern sun, seemingly suspended in air for a moment until it crashed back to the sea with a splash that took the shape of a gigantic old fashioned bath tub. I was in awe. No picture or video can ever compare with seeing it live.
