Decades after they fell out of fashion, hats are in style again. One manufacturer projects sales of fedoras alone will be up 20 percent this year. Rich Schlessinger reports on the comeback of an old trend.

A little History on the hat we all love so much. The word fedora comes from the title of an 1882 play by Victorien Sardou, Fédora, written for Sarah Bernhardt. Bernhardt played Princess Fédora in the play, and wore a hat similar to what is now considered a fedora. The fedora after that became a female fashion which lasted into the early part of the 20th century, when the fedora then became a male fashion item. A fedora is a felt hat that is creased lengthwise down the crown and pinched in the front on both sides. The creasing does not define the hat, however. Fedoras can be creased with teardrop crowns, diamonds, center dents, and others, and the positioning of pinches can vary. The brim goes all the way around the crown and can be left raw edge, finished with a sewn overwelt or underwelt, bound with grosgrain ribbon, or finished with a self-felted cavanagh edge. Fedoras can be found in nearly any color imaginable, but black, grey, tan, and brown are the most popular, this does not however, define them. Interestingly enough, we also owe the TRILBY hat to literature. The Trilby hat is a soft felt men's hat with a narrow brim and a deeply indented crown. My friend Flo and I made matching outfits for Together As One this year. This project was much more complicated and fun than the last one I did (Tiesto Jacket) since I actually learned how to solder and connect different colored EL wire together. All the EL wire was 2.2mm. My outfit used blue/green and purple wire. My friend's was 'power green' and 'dark blue'. We purchased all the EL wire products from www.thatscoolwire.com and sewed them onto some fedoras and vests that we bought. I hotglued wire to my shoes, but those broke really quick due to the flex from the walking and dancing (EL wire doesn't hold up to bending well). My gloves eventually died as well from the lightshows I gave. I DO NOT recommend wasting EL wire on any parts of ur body that may move a lot. We're working on a website project so keep your eyes open in the future!
