May 1997 In India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, female infanticide is so frequent that all second daughters are known as 'the girl born for the burial pit'. Desperately poor families routinely kill girl babies after birth for fear they can't afford to raise them or provide the extortionate dowry required by a groom's family. Pavati's husband killed her second daughter the day she was born. She went home to her father's house and didn't eat for a month following the death but with two other children she had to return to her tiny hut and carry on. Another baby, Hymera was luckier, brought to a safe house by her uncle despite fierce opposition from his neighbours. Now she is cared for by people who value her life. Teenage girls sit in a circle in a coconut grove discussing the strengths they will need as India's next generation of mothers. A report on the attempts of agencies, such as the Indian Council for Child Welfare, to stop infanticide through re-education, training of women and providing homes for unwanted girl babies. We follow the difficult lives of those who survive the practice. Twenty seven percent of Indians live below the poverty line and as a women, this economic status brings a life of enmity. A bride's parents must provide a dowry which often bankrupts the family. As a result female infanticide is a widespread tradition: "We accept the first girl, the second should be killed, then the third will be a son." But now the women are fighting back by forming self-help groups which offer a range of programmes from skills training, to saving and loan schemes. It's all in the hope that through giving women a more constructive role in society more girls will be saved. March 2012

It remains a critical concern in a number of "Third World" countries today, notably the two most populous countries on earth, China and India. In all cases, specifically female infanticide reflects the low status accorded to women in most parts of the world; it is arguably the most brutal and destructive manifestation of the anti-female bias that pervades "patriarchal" societies. Translation- "In India for centuries newborn baby girls are dying after their birth. In Tamil Nadu, the southwest part of India, unwanted babies are being killed even today. They prepared a solution with crushed smoke plant leaves. I didn't want to do it. In the morning I prayed to God and I gave her one spoon of the smoke solution. I was miserable. I layed down next to her but I couldn't look at her. The baby didn't die at once, she died in the evening. When I saw that she was still alive, I couldn't bear it anymore - I told my mother to save her, to give her sugarwater so she can wake up. My mother gave her it with her hands but it was too late... She died... My mother buried her in the garden behind our house. I couldn't do it myself. Later I planted flowers and a tree in that spot. She would <b>...</b>

Everyday you hear about human rights, but do you what they mean and how they affect you? Come along to a three day event celebrating International Day of Human Rights which kicks off next week at Newcastle City Library. Starting on Thursday, 10 December until Saturday, 12 December, the event which has been organised by the Newcastle City for Peace initiative will challenge peoples ideas of human rights and what they mean to them. The three day event will cover five themes including the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, Citizenship, Disabled People and Human Rights, North East Struggles and Taking Liberties. There will be exhibitions, talks, poetry, films and even a seasonal pantomime to illustrate the creation and importance of human rights with contributions from the whole region. Children across the region have been invited to take part in the three day event which will see the unveiling of the winning design of a birthday card to mark the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. As part of Taking Liberties there will be an opportunity to borrow a living book for 30 minutes which will give speakers the chance to talk about their own experiences including living with a disability, moving to a new country or changing gender.
