One Filipino-American's Vlog: Being Uncomfortable

This is my first video-log (vlog). I explore being uncomfortable through humor, identity, art and - well, watch it and come to your own uncomfortable conclusions. Maybe about glasses? or green smoothies? and hopefully skin. *** I am, however, no stranger to blogging. One entry in particular relates to this vlog: njgouge.wordpress.com I know, shameless promotion. Leave a comment. *** This vlog includes an (incomplete) original music composition, "Lanting Xu." Jessica Sanchez - Love You I Do - American Idol 2012 (Top 12 Girls) [Filipino Pride]

Filipino-Mexican talent Jessica Sanchez has advanced to the Top 13 of the hit US singing competition "American Idol" after wowing the judges with her swag, attitude, and moves. The announcement, made on Thursday (US time), brings the 16-year-old from San Diego, California to the finals of the competition, where public votes determine who will eventually get the top spot. During the girls' performance night on Wednesday, Sanchez—who performed second to the last—belted out "Love You, I Do," a song by one of Idol's most successful products, Academy Award- and Grammy-winning performer Jennifer Hudson. Bringing in her own flavor, rifts, and growls to the song, the Fil-Mexican earned a standing ovation from the audience, as well as from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler, who had nothing but praises for her. "The punctuation that you put with your body on the ends of your phrases and your notes and everything... the way you pull back, the way you let us have it—the whole thing is just really, really so beyond your years, it's crazy!" said Lopez. Jackson took note of Sanchez's performance giving off a vibe similar to that of diva Beyonce, while Tyler said her timing "comes out on your fingers when you're singing and making the turn-arounds." When Idol host Ryan Seacrest solicited the judges' "votes" at the end of the show, all three of them cited Sanchez as among the frontrunners of the night. Even Hudson—who recorded the song as part of the movie "Dreamgirls ...

The Art Scene: AMIGO

Amigo, a film set during the Philippine-American war in the 1900s, is written, directed, and edited by Oscar-nominate American independent filmmaker, John Sayles. It is produced by Anarchists' Convention, his production company based in the United States. It stars an ensemble cast of respected American and Filipino thespians headed by Oscar-winner Chris Cooper and Joel Torre. Amigo was shot entirely last year in different parts of Bohol. Post-production and laboratory work was also completed here. The crew is also 100% Filipino. AMIGO tackles a part of our history that has been virtually unexplored both in the arts and in our textbooks. Set in 1900 in San Isidro, Philippines, AMIGO is the story of Rafael Dacanay, the cabeza del barrio, who must deal with a garrison of American soldiers represented by Lieutenant Compton, a fair and sympathetic officer. Neither side can understand or trust the other, but are forced to live together, trying to survive in the middle of a 'dirty' war. When the American occupation policy gets tougher, Rafael has to answer to both the Americans and the Filipino patriots - with deadly consequences.

Jessica Sanchez reacts to Judges' Comments

LOS ANGELES - Though her latest performance did not get the same enthusiastic response from the judges as her previous ones, Filipino-American Jessica Sanchez was still among those who got the loudest applause from the American Idol live audience. Guest mentor Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas was impressed with Jessica's talent. The 16-year old singer said she's happy that so many fellow Filipinos have been supporting her from the beginning. She said, "Thank you guys for all the support and all the love. I hope I can visit the Philippines one day. You guys are amazing!" After wowing the judges with her rendition of Whitney Houston's classic "I Will Always Love You" last week, Jessica this time did an upbeat tune, singing "Turn the Beat Around" by Gloria Estefan. Judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson said it did not suit her voice and they advised her not to stray from ballads that showcase her vocal prowess. Jessica said she had a hard time picking a song. This week's theme was "Songs from the Year You Were Born". She said, "I've always been looking for constructive criticism from them because I want to always step up my game and perfect the next song that I'm doing, and they haven't been really giving me that. I'm actually glad that they gave me some because I know I'm not perfect. I need that to step up my game so hopefully if I'm here next week, I can do that, take their criticism and work on it."
