Glasgow Film Festival - Gene Kelly flashmob at Glasgow Airport

Travellers at Glasgow Airport on Tuesday 14 February 2012 were treated to an unexpected dance routine reminiscent of quintessential song'n'dance man Gene Kelly, ahead of the retrospective of his films at Glasgow Film Festival. The flashmob entertained passengers with a version of the legendary Singin' in the Rain dance, which made Kelly an icon. Gene Kelly was one of the greatest all-round talents ever to tap-dance his way across the silver screen. Kelly left an indelible impression on the movies as an actor, director and choreographer which can be seen during Glasgow Film Festival 2012 in all-time classics like Anchors Aweigh (1945), The Pirate (1948), Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), On the Town (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Brigadoon (1954) and Hello, Dolly (1969) from 18--26 February. The Gene Kelly retrospective is one of nineteen strands at Glasgow Film Festival 2012, which runs from 16 -- 26 February. Sundance Film Festival 2011 "Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul"

In a country with innumerable problems, Skateistan represents an oasis where children can be children and build the kinds of cross-cultural relationships that Afghanistan needs for future stability. Programmer's Note: Former professional snowboarder Orlando von Einsiedel found that the Skateistan project combined two worlds he felt very passionate about: extreme sports and social work. The Skateistan project—started by two Australian aid workers who began giving skating as well as educational lessons to more than 350 kids in Kabul, Afghanistan—equips young men and women with the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development and piqued von Einsiedel's interest enough to make him want to capture it with a camera. Flying directly from Frankfurt to Kabul, von Einsiedel and crew sought to create a more optimistic image of Afghanistan. What resulted is a beautifully composed film that turns a spotlight on neither the battles nor the victims in this war-torn country, but rather on the hopeful spirit and culture of change that the youth of Kabul are yearning to put into action. We're thrilled to welcome von Einsiedel's film to this year's Festival and urge you to check out skateistan.org on your next Internet stop.

"Happy" was the theme we were given by the organizers for this year's F5 Re:Play Fest, held in April in NYC, to create this edition's pieces, probably the hardest thing to convey in any artistic expression. After a good deal of introspection, and teaming up with awesome motion graphics artist Gerardo del Hierro, we decided that happy wasn't happy for Physalia unless pliers, microchips and a bit of soldering were involved, and with this idea we resolved to create the happiest machine Physalia has built to date. Stars light up Dubai film festival

Screaming fans were heard from behind the barriers of the 8th Dubai International Film Festival, as Tom Cruise attended the UAE premiere of Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment of Mission Impossible movies. The big screen blockbuster didn't steal the limelight away from regional uprisings, as one of the stars seemed more concerned about its influence on the countries involved. "Oddly there is no better time for artists work then in times of turmoil, a lot comes out of it, but I hope it's freedom and -- you know -- peace comes out of it more than anything," said actor Simon Pegg. Yet only a few out of 156 movies at the festival paid homage to the Arab Spring events with the focus predominantly on Egypt. Amr Wakd, Egyptian actor and festival juror, said the effects of the uprisings would be felt more than seen. "There will be an impact of whatever public movement that happened on the screen, not necessarily to discuss it or to delve into the details of it, but definitely the expression is an expression born after these movements and it will probably be a sturdier expression than we had before," he said. Suha Arafat, widow of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, also attended the festival to promote Price of Kings, a documentary on her husband, which is one of a 12-part series on some of the world's most impactful leaders. The film festival which began on December 7 will end on December 14. Speakers: Simon Pegg -- British actor Amr Wakd -- Egyptian actor and festival ...
